On a bit of a Minutemen kick and I wish I knew of a recent band that reminded me of the Minutemen.

YEAH RETAIL SIMPS

retail simps are great, love that kind of snotty, stomping garage rock

is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 14:51 (eight months ago) link

one things i love about the simps is despite the primitive garage style there’s actually some covert sick chops under the hood. the guitar on “love without friction” off the first album is so genius

Joe/Celluloid Lunch is great, really enjoy that Retail Simps stuff.

Really like this new Collate record. I was a fan already but a new full length was really welcome as I just had a 7" in house. Very economical and specific in sound, but I think they do it very well:

https://collate.bandcamp.com/album/generative-systems

Has female and male vocals, Janie from All Hits (a very good punk band) plays drums. The bass player / singer Erika also runs the label Domestic Departure, which is a cool label. But yeah, I like this record a lot.

need to catch up on this thread.

seeing Civic on Tuesday. GBH are playing on Saturday but I'm already going out Thurs/Fri and may possibly be too old for this shit.

some golden oldies playing January - the Boys and the Subhumans. I've seen the Boys a couple of times recently but it's been quite a few years since I last saw the Subhumans so looking forward to that one

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 9 December 2023 22:07 (five months ago) link

I got a huge haul in from La Vida Es Un Mus this week and can confirm that Sial - Sangkar 7" sounds even better on vinyl and is an absolute banger of a record.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 9 December 2023 22:11 (five months ago) link

sometimes I do stupid things like buy records that I already have on CD but when that record is Dolly Mixture - Demonstration Tapes I think that's OK

more synth-y lo-fi punk from Melbourne, Australia, where you have to make synth-y lo-fi punk or they put you in jail (that's true):

I saw Alien Nosejob a few months ago but I looked them up and they are from NSW. possibly that law exists across states

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 9 December 2023 23:09 (five months ago) link

I am from Sydney and I perceive Alien Nosejob to be Melbonic but perhaps they are somewhere geographically in-between

Anyway check out Exit Mould from Newcastle NSW and I don’t know if anyone has mentioned Sydney’s Negative Gears in this thread but they rule

meat and two vdgg (emsworth), Sunday, 10 December 2023 00:20 (four months ago) link

actually I think you're right, the main guy is from NSW but moved to Victoria, I didn't search v well before

ok the Melbourne synth-y lo-fi punk law stands

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 10 December 2023 00:21 (four months ago) link

I have a Negative Gears 12"

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 10 December 2023 00:21 (four months ago) link

I also bought a Soakie 12" this week in my La Vida Es Un Mus extravaganza. they are also from Melbourne, I think??

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 10 December 2023 00:23 (four months ago) link

every time I order from La Vida Es Un Mus they put a bonus Straightjacket Nation 12" in the order. I've got 3 of them now

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 10 December 2023 00:23 (four months ago) link

been playing the recent ep by ismatic guru non-stop, particular the song "a nice man," which has a fierce groove and fantastic punchline

Civic were great tonight, I bought the New Vietnam + Singles LP and Future Forecast both of which are absolute banger punk records

the support were also apparently from Melbourne although confusingly they were called These New South Whales, they were good too. seems like Melbourne has a pretty thriving punk scene, maybe I'll get over my fear of spiders and go to Australia one day

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 12 December 2023 23:30 (four months ago) link

I was feeling a bit glum earlier so I went out to see GBH and the Varukers tonight. I hadn't seen GBH for about 8 years but they still sound exactly the same, which is quite impressive for a bunch of blokes in their 60s tbf. Colin is so tiny. I guess that's why they went for the great big haircuts back in the day.

Just saw Black Eyes play on Friday night in DC and am happy to say that it was extremely good. Two new songs were played, each cool, so maybe a new album will come of it all at some point.

v happy this thread is getting posts. will catch up on these in a bit.

I am pretty psyched for this hardcore weekender coming up in March that's got Japanese crasher crust legends Framtid headlining. It's a pretty ridiculous line-up in general but I've seen a lot of the bands before anyway

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 21 December 2023 00:21 (four months ago) link

this is the line-up:

Framtid
Quarantine
The Flex
T.S. Warspite
The Annihilated
Stingray
Echo Chamber
Mazandaran
Desorden
Hellscape
Catastrophe

Went to see Armitage Shanks reunion gig tonight. My favourite toilet themed punk band. I love them. Shirts Off is one of my favourite punk songs of all time, esp the version with Billy Childish singing

trying to narrow down to the 20 best punk albums of 2023 and i've got like 50 contenders. bleh.

one that hasn't been posted to this thread all year but should've been is Home Front's Games of Power:

def felt more like the beginning of something than a defining work tho

I am posting because I saw that the Freeze are playing at Rebellion festival this year. I probably won't go to Rebellion festival but this might mean they play a London gig around that weekend. they might not, the thing with US bands playing London gigs around Rebellion festival is that they are always absolutely dead, because most of the people that would go to them are at Rebellion festival. I once saw Channel 3 play to the support band, me and maybe 3 other people at the Dublin Castle. when the Freeze last came over (about 14 years ago I think) I saw them at the Camden Underworld and they cordoned off the main bar because there weren't enough people to open the bar.

Anyway, I love the Freeze, and I hope I get to see them again

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 30 December 2023 02:59 (four months ago) link

I did play my Home Front LP btw. it's obv v derivative and you can play spot the influence esp that Suicide one lol. but they pretty much nail it and they are fun live so I can dig it.
