disappointed but too numb to be devastated by now and there's too much great queer music to waste any more time with hers

i really question, based on her particular lifestyle, how much time she ever spent directly interacting with LGBTQ folks or operating in spaces w/them. there are plenty of great pop musicians who do, and are actually strong allies and supporters and actual members of that community, so...idk it sucks. i agree w/map about the emotional intelligence of her work, which is what makes it more shocking in a way. for others "i don't care what people think" is manifested in better ways, like maren morris going off at transphobes within country music without any fear.

like i mean her life just seems like that of a person who has a very regimented set of places she goes to, i just don't sense cultural curiosity as much as a lot about herself. i don't mean that LGBTQ folks don't live in England or Ireland or Ibiza obv. i might be projecting though, unfairly on those who are similar to her in superficial ways.

I'm kind of baffled there has been radio silence from her & her team for the past two or three days since it broke out, given the fact that they're well aware of this making rounds on social media. Not even a half-assed notes app apology or some crisis management statement about her words being taken out of context or anything. She has two shows this weekend, I guess it's business per usual?

No it was like a DJ set of her tunes, like an album launch thing. She wasn’t actually meant to be there on the night per se. But that particular clubnight has links with her which go back years, so it’s quite A Thing for them to cancel something like that. Good on them I have to say. They did it quickly with a minimum of fuss.

i don't know that she's have any idea who roisin murphy is... though maybe i'm off-base on that and i'm just projecting my personal ignorance!

see the interesting thing here is that... i've seen this enough times, it's usually easy to guess when someone's a genuine bigot and when someone is genuinely confused... i think it's interesting honestly, because santana _wasn't_ "just asking questions", he just said something superficial, and when it was brought to his attention that what he'd said was superficial and ignorant he apologized. a lot of transphobes do the roisin thing where they feign ignorance, even though they've been retweeting bari weiss and so forth for years... cis people don't notice it or assign any significance to it but trans people know the transphobe Pipeline very well. they double down because there wasn't actually any question in their minds, it's all part of a strategy, a strategy to make their bigotry look reasonable. the conclusion was foreordained, and when it happens, trans people are blamed for not being sufficiently polite in our responses.

we knew rowling was a committed transphobe years before cis people were willing to acknowledge it... the "just asking questions" thing worked for a while, because they _looked_ like the questions a genuinely ignorant person could ask, the cis audience could _see themselves_ asking those same questions. which, again, is _entirely the point_, to ask those leading questions, questions based on faulty assumptions, questions that exploit the ignorance we all had for a long time, and by asking those questions publicly, draw people to those flawed conclusions.

america has transphobia, and it's very bad, and it's hurting lots of people, but it's of the alice cooper variety. it's inextricable from other forms of bigotry and denialism endemic to people of that mindset. uk transphobia masks itself as "progressive" and "feminist" and as such is, i think, more of a problem, because of the way it's institutionally entrenched and ingrained in british institutions. all the major media organs, all the major political players, they're all committed to transphobia. if you're not, you're out on your ear, because of your "radical agenda".

the good news is that it _is_ a generational thing, i think, like scientology in hollywood. you get one person in the right place and you can shape the minds of a generation. that's what's happened in the uk, i believe. the bad news is that the Mumsnet Generation now is, well, poisoned, poisoned with hatred and bigotry, and trans people are the ones who are and will continue to suffer its effects.

He also liked a transphobic tweet at some point and apologized saying it was “fat fingers” and liked by mistake and yet he followed the journalist before liking said tweet. So yeah as you said, the troublesome ones can be found by who they follow and interact with.

I think the US vs UK divide on this comes down to size, basically. The US isn't one country, like the name suggests it's basically 50 countries, and about half of them are governed by theocratic fascists or people who want to be and will be if given half a chance, but the other half aren't. And the US media is a patchwork, too, there's foaming-at-the-mouth right-wing media (mostly online) pushing a just-this-side-of-mob-violence anti-trans message but there's also trans defenders and people pushing back against that right-wing tide, and everyone's kind of siloed, reading and cheering for what they believe and occasionally hate-reading the other side. Whereas England is a little island with like 5 newspapers, all of which seem to have collectively adopted this frankly bizarre "the trans-es, they're coming to get us!" message, like people in a tiny rural village convinced that monsters are coming up the road, except the village is fucking London. Looking at it from outside it seems as if the entire British media culture (which again seems to be like 5 newspapers and 2 or 3 TV channels) has gone completely fucking insane.

Yes. Speaking as a 25yo I'm quite sure every single terf utterance I've seen has been by someone over, say, 40 or so. That's how it feels anyway.

Absolutely incredible that she hasn't said anything yet. It's popping up everywhere online, and her career isn't strong enough to survive such a thing. And I don't believe a terfy fan base would be sustainable.

Lots of audacity to perform and not acknowledge what happened especially now that her social media is overrun by the worst sort of people. I guess she simply does not care at all.

It's extremely easy to see how hurt many of her trans fans are right now, and some of them are apparently getting attacked by terfy types in the comments of her social media. I haven't had the stomach to read any of that shit so I'm only hearing that through a couple other forums I've read. She should have been able to craft some type of statement by now even if it was a banal empty gesture.
