"The Strokes!!"

My brother told me today that everyone likes the Strokes except me. He lies. Sensible folk know they suck.

Everyone likes at least one Mercury Rev album. QED. I never hear anything really bad said about Weezer or Basement Jaxx, either.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Absolutely not. I think that's the point.

And a good point at that.

wl (wl), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who doesn't love Neil Diamond?!

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

i was thinking today that lots and lots of people like boards of canada, who doesn't like em, holla!

ron (ron), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

how can you possibly nominate the Stones with their 25+ year track record of complete and utter shit

but this "they recorded some crap stuff therefore they are DISQUALIFIED" thing is ridiculous. I defy anyone to name me a musician who didn't disgrace themselves on record at least once.

Contradiction, Shaky Mo? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

second time's a charm:

what about composers?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

MOZART, DAMMIT!!!!!!

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

As a sidenote, how about Johnny Cash?

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Boards Of Canada bore me to death, sorry. Mozart too damn happy.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 20 September 2002 01:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

As Ned pointed out, thumbs down on MoB and the Pixies. Not so much a "I hate them", but more of a "what's the big deal?"

So has anyone shot down the Minutemen or Kraftwerk yet?

Anyway to throw a couple more names out there for consideration: Spacemen 3, The Kinks, X, Can, Velvet Underground, AC/DC

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

I see your X and raise you a Huey Lewis & The News.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wonder how hopeful any of you people posting new suggestions really are.

Josh (Josh), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

like 'oh I know here's one that they missed and surely everyone loves them!'

Josh (Josh), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Insert variation on the John Cage 4'33" gag here. And get me the ever-lovin' hell away from this disaster of a thread.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

i dont really care, i just happened to actually be thinking this today: "gosh, a lot of people like boards of canada" - deep thoughts are my specialty

ron (ron), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

haha you are all kidding right? come on let's face it the answer is SLEEPER

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Boards of Canada are ok- as in I don't actively hate them -but I don't often see the point of playing MHTRTC when it's sitting so close to my Cocteau Twins cds.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

yuss, COCTEAUS. or has someone already done them?

alexfack, Friday, 20 September 2002 02:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know so many people who hate the Cocteaus..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dare i suggest ABBA?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 September 2002 03:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is this "bands that EVERYONE loves" or "bands that EVERYONE ON ILM loves"? If the former, I suspect no one, but James Brown may be as close as you'll get. I'm not sure I've ever met anyone who didn't at least like his stuff.

I hate the Minutemen and Neil Diamond.

are there VU hatas among us?

s, Friday, 20 September 2002 04:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've heard a LOT of people slam the Velvets. (are you out there, Mark Prindle?)

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 September 2002 05:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

I FUCKING HATE THE KINKS.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 20 September 2002 06:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I dont like the Velvets or the Minutemen. Don't dislike them either particularly but that's not the point.

I do like James Brown.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 06:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

let me second chic. surely...

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 07:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alex in NYC, do you hate Madonna?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Any Momus haters out there? What about Brian Eno or Marvin Gaye. Go Beach Boys!

kinski (kinski), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've got it - REM! No, hang on a minute, I don't like them...

Jez, Friday, 20 September 2002 09:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm willing to bet I'm the only person on ILM who can't stand ABBA, and even I like a few songs.
-- Daniel_Rf

Dare i suggest ABBA?
-- Alex in NYC

Nope.....

Ray M (rdmanston), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

''haha you are all kidding right? come on let's face it the answer is SLEEPER''

I will set fire to yr hair mark!

''I dont like the Velvets or the Minutemen. Don't dislike them either particularly but that's not the point.''

bah! no one looked at that suggestion and then nearly towards someone had to say they don't love minuteman.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

well OK so no one has said they hate minuteman, Tom says he doesn't dislike them: Minuteman wins!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't hate Momus, but honestly I don't like his music.

everyone loves bon jovi, even when they say hate they mean love, you know this, I know this.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

No cos thats not the question Julio. I wouldnt admit to liking them cos I don't.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

bah!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

i've not heard minuteman.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Has anyone shot down the Beach Boys yet?"

BANG!

*Sound of band falling to earth accompanied by the sound of screams in irritating four-part harmony*

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just to summarize. The artists that have been mentioned that I like have all been shot down, except James Brown.

The rest that were mentioned - I don't like.

So right now it's James Brown (unless someone shot him down when I wasn't looking.)

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Minuteman are toss. Nice choruses, but the verses... yekky dehh...

I seem to recall Vitalic has a decent rep round here...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've never heard anyone say they dislike Beck...?

Jez, Friday, 20 September 2002 11:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

i dislike beck.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

and i don't believe you.

btw, what's with the bold type.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham shot down James Brown, unless he counts as a 90s artist. There is no ruling yet as to whether the weapon used in the shooting is acceptable under thread-rules.

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can't stand Beck.

I think there's a Minuteman/Minutemen confusion going on.

James Brown counts as a 90s artist surely - was there not a MEGAMIX and a single in about 97??

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't like the Stone Roses. And I realised the other day I don't like T.Rex either.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Slade!

Big Audio Dynamite!

The Firm!

The Bangles!

Was Not Was!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't care much for Ministry. Most Kool & The Gang, Ella Fitzgerald, Weezer and Basement Jaxx stuff i've heard has been in-one-ear-out-the-other. The Human League makes it but barely. I've never heard Spacemen 3. X is WAY overrated.

Joy Division ?

Patrick, Friday, 20 September 2002 11:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

People, people. Abruptum! Everybody loves Abruptum, right?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

So, everybody likes Gene Vincent then, eh? If not, surely we all got a little love for Buddy Holly.

So, far JB is the only one out there it looks like everybody's giving a chance to.
