you need more disco and boogie ballads. or 80s r&b. plenty of bass. i swear this cd has been playing in my car all summer long. bass in your face! and beautiful ballads galore. well, as much bass as my subaru allows. but to be fair its a decent amount of bass! i play it really loud all through town. people know Change is coming!

some of the most beautiful sounds (and ballads) i have heard this year have come from the two albums by Heat. sooooooooooo pretty. they make me swoon. *sigh*

These are some of my favourite Stevie Wonder songs - "Smile Please", "Too Shy to Say", "Joy Inside My Tears", "The Secret Life of Plants". It's more often when he's trying to throw a party on vinyl that he gets boring.

controversial opinion: with a few of notable exceptions, morrissey is an awful lyricist

the "just a kiss away" section at the end of Gimme Shelter is extremely lame and almost torpedoes the song.

yeah merry clayton and the intro are easily the best parts of the song, but for all its faults it's still a powerful record, that feeling of society being balanced on a knife edge over complete chaos. then mick comes in at the end like a fucking hippy and says we can fix it all with a kiss. and bearing in mind his sexual politics as expressed in other songs of the same period, fuck off with your kiss mick.

I think the message of this part of the song is more "chaos and violence are sexy".

I agree that it does also come across as a sleazy come-on, but I don't think that was the intention

i was giving those early years the benefit of the doubt because i figured their were some choice music hall sides or a really cracking version of "pretty polly" out there in the u.k.
not to mention some sweet welsh-language numbers. actually i'm willing to extend it to 1926. just in case harry lauder doesn't make the cut by 1920.

Not saying that's the best but I'm sure there was a lot of great music hall stuff released pre-1920.

Lauder does make the cut by 1920 - he recorded most of his famous numbers like "Roamin' in the Gloamin'" and "I Love a Lassie" in the 1910s.
I wish I knew more pre-1920 UK music; I'm a big Welsh music enthusiast but I don't really know about any Welsh-language records from then.
