He played dinnertime music
This reminds me of the time I had a Wayne Shorter CD playing in the car when I drove my family to the airport and my suburban zoomer niece referred to it as "Weather channel music." But then, she isn't a jazz critic

Controversial music opinion (one I think I've posted here before): Weather Report were great right up until Jaco Pastorius joined, and sucked afterward.

To be clear, I do think I could put together a pretty extensive playlist of mind-blowing Stevie songs. It’s just that there’s a lot of sort of wandering, bleating things crowding them out on the albums. Guy is some kinda genius for sure, just maybe not my kinda.

"I'm not sure how much of ILX shares my personal-taste view on ballads, but my own personal issue with most of them is the way they often lack any contribution from a rhythm section"
you need more disco and boogie ballads. or 80s r&b. plenty of bass. i swear this cd has been playing in my car all summer long. bass in your face! and beautiful ballads galore. well, as much bass as my subaru allows. but to be fair its a decent amount of bass! i play it really loud all through town. people know Change is coming!

These are some of my favourite Stevie Wonder songs - "Smile Please", "Too Shy to Say", "Joy Inside My Tears", "The Secret Life of Plants". It's more often when he's trying to throw a party on vinyl that he gets boring.

Merry Clayton and Mick Jagger discussing her part.
― the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 12:56 (seven months ago) link
yeah merry clayton and the intro are easily the best parts of the song, but for all its faults it's still a powerful record, that feeling of society being balanced on a knife edge over complete chaos. then mick comes in at the end like a fucking hippy and says we can fix it all with a kiss. and bearing in mind his sexual politics as expressed in other songs of the same period, fuck off with your kiss mick.
― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 14:07 (seven months ago) link
we can fix it all with a kiss
I think the message of this part of the song is more "chaos and violence are sexy".
