Fuckin' Venom, of course.

very difficult poll. for me it comes down to

celtic frost - the first extreme (for their time!) metal band I got into; saw them on the Into the Pandemonium tour, they opened with "The Usurper," fucking unbelievable. however,

mercyful fate - with each passing year their greatness increases for me, and this track is FIRE. however,

sarcofago - I mean I kinda can't overstate how great I think they are. on the other hand, not sure that this track is in the same neighborhood as "evil," but <3 <3 <3 sarcofago. however,

bulldozer - this is clearly the kvlt vote here & I'd almost vote for it but in the end it's still thrash, and I don't love thrash like I love mercyful fate. nothing can trump mercyful fate for me I think.

btw alex if you don't know bulldozer you better get with the program because you would enjoy them.

I'll get on that. Celtic Frost were my second choice, JOhn.

Coming to Black Metal retrospectively, Celtic Frost was the only band I really knew here - a serious muso friend was fanatically into them when the initial run of records came out - and they still seem to stand out above the rest, though I remember Sarcofago being outstandingly nuts. Will have to give this another couple of spins. I'll be fascinated to follow the discussion and the voting. Multiple BM polls? Bring it on!

Voted Sodom, but obv it's a hard choice. Also, like the shameless self-plugging with the Aura Noir tune.

Siegbran, Thursday, 6 August 2009 21:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Burzum for me but a hard choice. Too many good stuff on this one.

celtic frost. that song was like... terrifying when i first heard it, and it was the jam of choice when me and my friend scott would play bass/drum duos in his garage. (that and "empathological necroticism.") i guess it's not really black metal or whatever, but CF never get the credit they deserve for influencing BM dorks.

Hey, "Warhead" is my fave Venom track. Everything else I know on this is great, but hearing "Warhead" for the first time was like a hilarious thrilling window opening in my head.

Great comp. Listening back, I think I confused Sarcofago with Nattefrost - absolutely crazed lo-fi production. Celtic Frost still coming out on top, but Tormentor deserve an honorable mention. Attila's vocals are amazing

Mercyful Fate's bombastic vocals and guitar dynamics took me right back to listening to the Tommy Vance show in the early eighties - tonight I raise a drinking horn to his memory!

i don't own in the sign of evil and i wish i did cuz i would, um, play it. and i need a copy of obsessed by cruelty.

scott seward, Friday, 7 August 2009 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Obsessed by Cruelty is the only Sodome LP I own. It's the one with the song "Volcanic Slut" which includes lyrics about "Nasty gnomes and mean vampires". I love bad translation.

Nothing on this poll touches Celtic Frost. Mercyful Fate an easy second. I have a lot of love for that Mayhem track too.

Nate Carson, Friday, 7 August 2009 19:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Speaking of translation issues, what does "Burst command until war" mean?

(Oh, and here's to ya Tommy!)

Soukesian, Friday, 7 August 2009 20:20 (fourteen years ago) link

hey guys you know about the european press of "obsessed by cruelty" right? that it has an extra song and is even more raw and awesome?

"We recorded this album twice. The first version was recorded in Berlin and
the record company said that: "No, it is awful - …so bad and shit…". We had to
record it twice and the second recording we did nearby in Nürnberg, Germany.
This recording has one bonus track because we had another guitar player. It was
a completely different recording and as for that trash press made in Berlin, it
was just for the US import. And it was a mistake of the company as they changed
the tapes, so there was a complete new recording of "Obsessed by Cruelty".

The original recording is used on the original US edition, released by Metal
Blade, and most editions of the album on all formats. Only the European
Steamhammer edition of the LP seems to contain the second recording with the
additional "After the Deluge" track.

Hah! Of course!

Soukesian, Saturday, 8 August 2009 08:35 (fourteen years ago) link

I have both versions and indeed the old Euro LP version is better, guitars being actually in tune & all. Although I am not a big fan of either version - I love In The Sign Of Evil to death and Persecution Mania/Agent Orange too of course but Obsessed is just a bit lame really.

God bless Tommy Vance, the Friday Night Rock Show was where I heard some of this stuff for the first time.
