I've been through the desert on a horse with no face

I can’t turn my face into a horse.

i would have preferred the Small Faces backing Dylan up in the 60s.

I am absolutely on board with this. I mean, not instead of The Band, but in addition to, like if Dylan had also toured in ‘67-‘68.

As it happened, Ian McLagan was in Dylan’s 1984 road band. During the first show, McLagan was scrambling: songs were in different keys than they’d rehearsed, and Bob played a bunch of songs they hadn’t rehearsed. After a couple more shows, McLagan found Bob in the hotel bar and made some setlist suggestions. Bob said, “Hm, that’s a good idea. You know, why don’t you write those down for me.” So Ian made a list of songs he thought would work and gave it to Bob. For the rest of the tour, none of those songs were played.

oh i'm already waiting for tarfumes to show up with a good anecdote about the time that miles and can and donna summer were at george clinton's house and they all listened to The Band and made fun of Steve Miller.

Sorry, all I can do is reiterate that Miles was a Who fan, and insisted that “I Can See For Miles” be played over the PA at his ‘70s concerts just before the performance started.

omg totally sharing this with maria.

scott seward, Friday, 11 August 2023 21:06 (eight months ago) link

that is so cool about miles and i can see for miles. very funny too! miles was so funny. he was the original internet troll too. i love those interviews where someone will ask him who else he likes on trumpet and he would just say that he liked al hirt. you know that had to burn up all the serious bop trumpet dudes. though miles did call him a white uncle tom as well. even in a compliment he had to bash you!

(and al hirt was no joke as a player don't get me wrong, but still...)

reminds me of Dylan extemporizing on Jimmy Buffett’s songwriting prowess in an RS interview 10 years or so ago

brimstead, Friday, 11 August 2023 21:16 (eight months ago) link

the real reason 1973 is the birth of rap? the release of "Bad Bad Leroy Brown". Truth! Best top ten gangsta rap single of all time.

x-post - dylan is totally the folk miles davis. they have that same ability to stagger people with a compliment.

Many XPs Little Feat and the Doobie Brothers are alot closer than you'd think.

Robert Forster did that too when I interviewed him in 2006. He meant it, though.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 August 2023 22:51 (eight months ago) link

REAL TALK: "A Pirate Looks At 40" is a great song.

I might be on board for a Buffett listening thread. I'm impressed on the rare occasions I encounter his deeper '70s tracks.

Is that Miles Davis PA thing true? Can’t find another mention of it anyway.

I bet Dylan meant it too tbh

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 August 2023 23:17 (eight months ago) link

Dylan apparently went thru a period where was was obsessed w/Beck (Hansen, not Jeff)... so, no shade on Beck (or Buffett), but it's totally not unreasonable to think he was sincerely praising Buffett.

Nonhuman biologics enthusiast (morrisp), Friday, 11 August 2023 23:36 (eight months ago) link

He loved Gordon Lightfoot, so why not

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 August 2023 23:40 (eight months ago) link

it was way more refreshing to hear him say Buffett than the Avett brothers or some shit

The Original Human Breadbox (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 August 2023 23:44 (eight months ago) link

The Miles/“Miles” thing was in a book by his former road manager, whose title escapes me at the moment, and which is not good.

ha! now you're really bringing me back.

pretty sure that matos thing was her single favorite ilx moment.

I wish there had been a period where Dylan was obsessed with Hanson.

"So Queen, when you talk about the greatest bands ever… I would never say anyone is greater than The Beatles, but there's an argument right now that Queen, because of their ability to transcend stadiums, there's an argument that they are more relevant today than the Beatles are."

"Always it's been the Beatles when you talk about the greatest bands ever. But there's an argument now that the Beatles never made anything you could play in a stadium. The Beatles never made anything you could play at a huge sporting event."

Obv Mr Lillywhite has somehow missed Hey Jude getting played at sporting events over here.

Not really that controversial in the UK or outside North America generally.

Here's my controversial opinion

Queen aren't good

a (waterface), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 18:40 (eight months ago) link

that's a pretty common olde-ilx view. i always felt like there was more american queen love than brit queen love. kinda like my heroes bauhaus.

scott seward, Wednesday, 16 August 2023 18:42 (eight months ago) link

for years i felt like queen should get more credit for everything that they did but it might start going a little overboard now. that movie definitely did something.

scott seward, Wednesday, 16 August 2023 18:43 (eight months ago) link

(by u.s./u.k. love i meant here but maybe in the wider world too...? they were so huge here when they were huge. gods really.)

On ILX yes, not among the general public

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 18:47 (eight months ago) link

They're not stupid enough or maybe they're not the right kind of stupid

a (waterface), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 18:47 (eight months ago) link

oh yeah -- for my students they're comparable to the Beatles. During lockdown they'd play the classic rock warhorses with their parents, hence why Rumours is still very much a thing.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 18:48 (eight months ago) link

First three Queen albums - all-time great
Next two - partially great but starting to slip
New of the World onwards - mostly unmitigated shite with a few entertaining novelty songs dotted about

I have expressed this opinion to people (in the UK) to a reaction of shock and dismay, hence it's an actual road-tested controversial opinion.

Logacta championship 1978 (North London heats) (Matt #2), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 19:15 (eight months ago) link

I am shocked and dismayed.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 19:15 (eight months ago) link

Queen not being good is hardly a controversial opinion. The frankly terrible movie helped making them somewhat relevant again and fooled the younger generations into thinking Queen were like a well respected UK rock band in the 70’s which they were not, at least from a critical point of view.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 19:18 (eight months ago) link

I remember reading a contemporary review of Jazz as a kid that detailed the decline in Queen's discography by comparing each record to a well-known restaurant, with their latest release paralleled with McDonalds.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 16 August 2023 19:20 (eight months ago) link

I remember one reviewer in Creem--it may have been Christgau--saying of Jazz, "A group of studio techs could make the next Queen album."

But so what. They are justly beloved.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 19:22 (eight months ago) link

i'll always love them. jazz is a crazy record. news of the world is too! if you can get past the intro. i have no problem with WWRY/WATC but i can understand people not wanting to hear it. and the game is one of the cornerstones of hip hop for pete's sake.

scott seward, Wednesday, 16 August 2023 19:27 (eight months ago) link

The UK/US divide with Queen is with their post-1984 records, bc the US kind of gave up on Queen after "Radio Ga Ga" until the reissues started happening after Freddy's death. But yes, also US critics had a problem with the band. Dave Marsh called them "fascist."

Josefa, Wednesday, 16 August 2023 19:50 (eight months ago) link

I don't think UK critics liked them either? There was def a lot of reader backlash when Mojo first did a Queen cover.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 16 August 2023 19:58 (eight months ago) link

Fascists also have the ability to transcend stadiums

Josefa, Wednesday, 16 August 2023 20:02 (eight months ago) link

uk critics tended always to dislike them, tho the reasons shifted down the years

mark s, Wednesday, 16 August 2023 20:05 (eight months ago) link

Yeah the Gilbert & Sullivan style flamboyance wasn't popular among the punkerati in the UK. Can't imagine the likes of "Whispering" Bob Harris were too keen on them either.

Logacta championship 1978 (North London heats) (Matt #2), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 20:16 (eight months ago) link

did u.k. critics give glam bands good reviews? or was it all kid stuff to them. i'm guessing queen struck them as kid stuff too.
