I would have added Boots Riley

Just kinda bizarre that Kool Keith isn't on there

oh he is.

But Kevin Gates? Come on.

kevin gates is very funny, more in his interviews than his rhymes tho

ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Monday, 14 August 2023 16:11 (nine months ago) link

the only interview I've heard with him was the Combat Jack one where he got mad at the co-host for defending prison guards

I have uh a lot of opinions

share 'em, why not? no slick rick or odb seem like pretty big oversights

glad they included ghostface tho, he really is one of the funniest rappers.

I mean, the list is so flawed that it's not worth nitpicking, needs an entire overhaul

sean paul akerman (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 August 2023 17:15 (nine months ago) link

He belongs on the list but their example for Pimp C is just a line he borrowed from LL Cool J!

JoeStork, Monday, 14 August 2023 17:15 (nine months ago) link

good to see kool keith and mf doom on there but where the hell is odb

ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 04:58 (nine months ago) link

maybe it will get bigger but it's absolutely insane to me that this trash magazine is not running with the large top of the fold news about Gary Young

Yeah, I was surprised how low it was when they posted it last night. Looks like it’s moved up a few notches, but still… this is Gary f’in Young!! (Guess Dolly reuniting Paul and Ringo takes the prize)

Quite a Mojo-ation going on: the news pieces I see at the top of the page are about Dolly Parton/The Beatles, Gary Young, DJ Shadow, Talking Heads, Gun'n'Roses and Green Day plus a couple about young whiper-snappers like Mac DeMarco and the National

This 10.0 album wouldn’t exist without the guy (even if the review was taken down for some reason)

You have been verified with your voice (morrisp), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:09 (nine months ago) link

ha ha taken down because Ott wanted a pay-out iirc

It’s wild that there is currently no review of S&E on Pitchfork.com

You have been verified with your voice (morrisp), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:32 (nine months ago) link

I guess maybe it's odd that they didn't review the 30th-anniversary reissue from last year, but if that hadn't come out, I wouldn't think it unusual that they didn't have a review of an album that came out three years before the site started.

jaymc, Friday, 18 August 2023 14:41 (nine months ago) link

well, Pavement is kind of a quintessential Pitchfork band. And they've gone back to review tons of albums that came out before the site started. This is an odd case because there was a 10.0 review that was scrubbed because the author was kicking up a fuss.

Yeah seems like a quirk of circumstance; maybe they’ll give it a Sunday review eventually (although I kinda like the lacuna effect in a way).

You have been verified with your voice (morrisp), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:48 (nine months ago) link

it's totally insane and speaks volumes that there's no review. they're going back and reviewing old stuff all the time

the famous shit cat review is of a reissue of an album that came out in 1962.

a (waterface), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:52 (nine months ago) link

i guess it just proves that they're a shit music site

a (waterface), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:53 (nine months ago) link

Oh, I missed the Ott thing. Yes, Pitchfork reviews old albums all the time with the Sunday Review, although I get the impression that one of the main goals of the SR is to expand the canon beyond the site's 90s indie-rock roots. So Pavement might not be top of the list for the same reason that a Mariah Carey single replaced "Gold Soundz" as Pitchfork's #1 song of the 90s.

jaymc, Friday, 18 August 2023 15:00 (nine months ago) link

Wow… S&E was #70 on last year’s list of The 150 Best Albums of the 1990s(!!)

I guess times have changed…

Things done changed on this side.
Remember they used to slack? Now they dance, right?

no they Teams probably

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Friday, 18 August 2023 15:12 (nine months ago) link

I guess I missed it or forgot when that list came out last year, because dang… that goes far beyond the scope of revisionism that I anticipated to find (I thought it would be top 5 at least).

You have been verified with your voice (morrisp), Friday, 18 August 2023 15:21 (nine months ago) link

yeah that's pretty fucked up

a (waterface), Friday, 18 August 2023 16:01 (nine months ago) link

The Gary Young item has now dropped to the second row of "More From Pitchfork" (mixed in with a mishmash of news & features from the past month). I think that stinks!

You have been verified with your voice (morrisp), Friday, 18 August 2023 18:49 (nine months ago) link

Forgive me if I'm misremembering, but wasn't this a fuckin top-of-page item last year?: https://pitchfork.com/news/snacks-bethany-cosentinos-pet-cat-and-best-coast-album-cover-star-has-died/

You have been verified with your voice (morrisp), Friday, 18 August 2023 18:51 (nine months ago) link

sadly, you have to have a bunch of rip tweets from famous people to keep the prime Pitchfork real estate

"sorry Gary, Snacks the cat pushed forward the discourse man, you just... don't"

terrific headline

I was surprised when they reviewed Terror Twilight *twice* in the last few years. Seemed to me a bit like old habits (Pavement love) dying hard.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Sunday, 20 August 2023 12:26 (nine months ago) link

it's somewhat understandable because the first was a sunday review, then the second was the reissue with new bonus material

ufo, Sunday, 20 August 2023 13:30 (nine months ago) link

The Lyle Lovett review is really good. I loved that album in high school.

Both those Terror Twilight reviews are really good, fwiw

Cone of uncertainty (morrisp), Sunday, 20 August 2023 14:46 (nine months ago) link

it's somewhat understandable because the first was a sunday review, then the second was the reissue with new bonus material

That was the surprise though - at least one other album (can't remember which now) had a deluxe version that they passed over because they'd already done the Sunday review. Since then the Cure's Wish has also been understandably neglected this way (the gap between the Sunday review and the deluxe was only half a year).

I wonder why there wasn’t a Sunday review today.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 28 August 2023 02:08 (eight months ago) link

They sent out an email with links to 10 archival Sunday reviews and a note saying "This weekend, we’re taking a quick summer break to bring you our editors’ picks of 10 of our favorite Sunday Reviews from this year: an all-star ’80s country collaboration, the first Sunday Review of an EP, a ’90s Tejano classic, a singer who helped shaped half a century of pop music, the biggest classic rock album of all-time, and more."

Ah, thanks. I never signed up for their emails.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 28 August 2023 02:16 (eight months ago) link

I didn’t know they did emails

I’ve tried following them on social media, but they just continuously post links to old features/reviews
