I remember thinking Prindle was really gross even at the time, but I also happy in those early years to find anyone writing about some of the obscure artists he covered.

I like this line from that same review:

Lydon has always sung because he has to; his singular voice couples acute distress with an almost physical sense of relief.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 10 August 2023 15:34 (nine months ago) link

but anyway the point of this isn't to defend Prindle's website but rather the idea that it's kind of useful to be able to follow *one* critic who writes about a bunch of albums sometimes and get a feel for how they think and what they like because I, personally, have discovered a lot of great music that way. some of those guys knew a ton about prog for instance and when they gave high marks to something in that area you knew it was good. compare to Pitchfork/Rolling Stone today, as much as I applaud their efforts to include stuff from a diverse set of genres that appeal to a diverse set of fanbases I also think this approach can lead to lists which appeal to basically no specific person

Do some of y'all not have posts on this exact website that you're not embarrassed about from 2004? Including sexist ones?

Not excusing bad behavior, but ILX's own archives show behavior as bad or worse, even from those who still post here, and nobody (besides milo) is chasing anybody around with gotcha quotes from 17 years ago.

Shit, cat.

re: ratings, I like Alfred's categories

Indexed, Thursday, 10 August 2023 15:45 (nine months ago) link

xp
ilxors can't delete ilx posts though. idk, there's no way to genuinely respond to that Neando without sounding like a smug prick, but fwiw I do not relate to "I used to post heinous shit on the internet, it was the style at the time," and I imagine some or even many ilxors feel the same. like it's not inconceivable that some people weren't sexist in 2004, right? I'm not saying you should feel terrible about it right now and we can't account for how we grew up (I definitely said some heinous shit pre-internet when I was a kid), but I guess I'm wary of implying these things are normal or phases one naturally goes through

I suppose I'm lucky to have been fairly self-conscious & anxious for most of my internet posting life. I'd agonize over posting a blog comment or w/e, lurked for years here before posting, etc. I know there's stuff I've posted on ilx that I'd find embarrassing now, and I can recall specific posts that received deserved pushback for a variety of reasons, but nothing remotely like that Tori Amos intro (which I'm not going to post, it's gross, but maybe read it if you're finding my response too pious). I also think there's a big social dynamic difference between posting reviews and engaging in a forum discussion

rob, Thursday, 10 August 2023 15:58 (nine months ago) link

maybe to get back on thread track: I think it's good pitchfork deleted their egregiously racist reviews from the early 00s

Wait -- I'm confused.

I was talking about Alfred's categorical ranking system on HTV. Couldn't tell you what the difference between a 7.5 and a 7.7 rated album is, but I think having some broad categories is helpful for prioritization when you're talking about a site like Pitchfork that reviews 5 albums a day.

Indexed, Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:08 (nine months ago) link

lol i assumed that was about a prindle review of pil

imago, Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:09 (nine months ago) link

first actual prindle review of pil

No hang on that was a typo - I meant that Leonard Cohen HAS a revolting cock. It's withered and scabby with an endless stream of pus and blood oozing out all over his testicles and underpanties.

imago, Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:10 (nine months ago) link

shd have spoilered that probably lol genuinely sorry

imago, Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:13 (nine months ago) link

ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Monday, 14 August 2023 16:04 (nine months ago) link

I would have added Boots Riley

Just kinda bizarre that Kool Keith isn't on there

oh he is.

But Kevin Gates? Come on.

kevin gates is very funny, more in his interviews than his rhymes tho

ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Monday, 14 August 2023 16:11 (nine months ago) link

the only interview I've heard with him was the Combat Jack one where he got mad at the co-host for defending prison guards

I have uh a lot of opinions

sean paul akerman (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 August 2023 16:33 (nine months ago) link

share 'em, why not? no slick rick or odb seem like pretty big oversights

glad they included ghostface tho, he really is one of the funniest rappers.

ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Monday, 14 August 2023 17:13 (nine months ago) link

I mean, the list is so flawed that it's not worth nitpicking, needs an entire overhaul

sean paul akerman (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 August 2023 17:15 (nine months ago) link

He belongs on the list but their example for Pimp C is just a line he borrowed from LL Cool J!

JoeStork, Monday, 14 August 2023 17:15 (nine months ago) link

good to see kool keith and mf doom on there but where the hell is odb

Hospital Radio, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 10:36 (nine months ago) link

i, uh, think they might have messed up the score on the jiggy in jersey review

ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 04:46 (nine months ago) link

they fixed it lol (it showed 0.0, i swear)

ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 04:58 (nine months ago) link

maybe it will get bigger but it's absolutely insane to me that this trash magazine is not running with the large top of the fold news about Gary Young

a (waterface), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:00 (nine months ago) link

the NYT of music journalism

a (waterface), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:01 (nine months ago) link

Yeah, I was surprised how low it was when they posted it last night. Looks like it’s moved up a few notches, but still… this is Gary f’in Young!! (Guess Dolly reuniting Paul and Ringo takes the prize)

You have been verified with your voice (morrisp), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:05 (nine months ago) link

Quite a Mojo-ation going on: the news pieces I see at the top of the page are about Dolly Parton/The Beatles, Gary Young, DJ Shadow, Talking Heads, Gun'n'Roses and Green Day plus a couple about young whiper-snappers like Mac DeMarco and the National

This 10.0 album wouldn’t exist without the guy (even if the review was taken down for some reason)

You have been verified with your voice (morrisp), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:09 (nine months ago) link

ha ha taken down because Ott wanted a pay-out iirc

It’s wild that there is currently no review of S&E on Pitchfork.com

You have been verified with your voice (morrisp), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:32 (nine months ago) link

I guess maybe it's odd that they didn't review the 30th-anniversary reissue from last year, but if that hadn't come out, I wouldn't think it unusual that they didn't have a review of an album that came out three years before the site started.

jaymc, Friday, 18 August 2023 14:41 (nine months ago) link

well, Pavement is kind of a quintessential Pitchfork band. And they've gone back to review tons of albums that came out before the site started. This is an odd case because there was a 10.0 review that was scrubbed because the author was kicking up a fuss.

Yeah seems like a quirk of circumstance; maybe they’ll give it a Sunday review eventually (although I kinda like the lacuna effect in a way).

You have been verified with your voice (morrisp), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:48 (nine months ago) link

it's totally insane and speaks volumes that there's no review. they're going back and reviewing old stuff all the time

the famous shit cat review is of a reissue of an album that came out in 1962.

a (waterface), Friday, 18 August 2023 14:52 (nine months ago) link

i guess it just proves that they're a shit music site
