Your point is well taken but my dad got COVID in Paris and therefore his experience of Paris was seeing a whole lot of the inside of his hotel room.

Like, one could go spend ten days inside a hotel room in Evanston, Illinois, and get the same experience.

Steely Duran (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 6 August 2023 01:55 (eight months ago) link

My COVID experience has been lying around in my childhood bedroom and occasionally venturing into my patents' yard with a mask on to get fussed over by my mother, sister, and nieces.

I'm flying abroad for the first time in years soon - I'm trying to essentially 'shield' for the week before (not going into office, public transport etc) and wearing a filter mask on the plane and in the airport because I'm so paranoid about getting anything (not just covid - kids' friends are getting stomach bugs at the moment) and spoiling this much-planned holiday!

Have got travel insurance too...

kinder, Sunday, 6 August 2023 13:46 (eight months ago) link

We never used to get travel insurance, but between covid and cancellations and all sorts of new normal travel headaches, we're converts. And it's already come in handy, too.

I just know everyone is waiting with bated breath, but one week later, I have tested clean.

I'd like to thank my family, for getting me sick in the first place and then caring for me. I'd also like to thank Paxlovid, FlowFlex tests, 7-Up, ibuprofen, and Wyld cannabis/cbd gummies.

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Thursday, 10 August 2023 14:44 (eight months ago) link

I'd heard Paxlovid can interact with and potentiate cannabis/THC, any reports?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 August 2023 15:10 (eight months ago) link

I didn't notice anything

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Thursday, 10 August 2023 15:57 (eight months ago) link

But tbh I only took a gummy on my last day of Pax

having done lots of recent travels around europe i'd estimate mask wearing on planes here is at less than 1%.

stirmonster, Thursday, 10 August 2023 17:22 (eight months ago) link

I presently know one entire family w/covid and another friend who picked it up out and about somewhere, and two weeks in is still going through hell. Vaccinated, and otherwise a healthy fit guy btw!

omar little, Thursday, 10 August 2023 17:25 (eight months ago) link

i also avoided weed until my final day of paxlovid. weed doesn’t work when i’m sick, though, it’s horrible

ivy., Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:11 (eight months ago) link

Every kind of intoxicant is repulsive to me when I'm sick, including alcohol. And none of them work, either.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:17 (eight months ago) link

Christine otm. Personally I avoid weed when I am not feeling great. For me, weed presses the accelerator on however I happen to be feeling at that moment, so I do not indulge unless I am in a good place.

Anyway covid... a year after my first encounter and months after the second, I feel generally fine, but the cough is persistent and I get a day or so of lethargy once every few weeks. Is this just how thing are going to be from now on?

Bonobo Vox (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 10 August 2023 18:19 (eight months ago) link

My case was not that bad, but some days I still feel a little like I am recovering, especially my throat and postnasal stuff, which is weird, since I didn't have a cough or anything. But like you said, kind of random, once every several days (so far). Btw, my wife heard a report on the radio the other day which absolutely nailed the onset of my illness. Apparently the current strain typically starts with a very mild sort throat, so mild that most people don't bother testing, and then a couple of days into it the sore throat suddenly gets much worse. That's exactly what happened to me.

I only brought up weed stuff because I read that cannabis products supposedly interact chemically with paxlovid, amplifying the effects both positive and negative. So I've read accounts of even some regular users "greening out" or whatever and getting dizzy, nauseous or paranoid with their regular dose.

i know a lot of people personally with similar stories. months later and they're foggy and wiped out. it's also suggested after you get it, you don't push yourself for a few weeks or even several months.

omar little, Thursday, 10 August 2023 19:48 (eight months ago) link

Omar, I would personally be okay with never pushing myself ever again.

Like, I would be okay with another year or so of taking it easy. Focus on bed rest and hydration.

Unfortunately the universe has other plans. My children wish to eat food and live indoors.

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Thursday, 10 August 2023 20:31 (eight months ago) link

maybe fortunately i think it's just not pushing oneself in terms of exercise or stressful physical activity beyond the usual norm. as much fun it'd be to chill like Oblomov for a long time it probably isn't realistic.

omar little, Thursday, 10 August 2023 20:36 (eight months ago) link

Ha yes, I have dramatically scaled down on playing drums in a dive bar thrice weekly. Also dialing down on my previous habit of either walking 2 miles or biking 5.

Bonobo Vox (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 10 August 2023 20:42 (eight months ago) link

I took about a month off from any exercise at all after my first bout. The second one tho was so mild that I was back at the gym with no I’ll effects the next week. (Having had both moderate and very mild cases, I strongly endorse the latter, tho how you engineer that I do not know.)

national wastewater curve seems to be bending according to latest data from Biobot. still increasing but at slower rate. hoping to see plateau or decline shortly.

Dang, COVID rules everything around me right now — my 18-yr-old is down with it now, and he’s supposed to start his first semester at community college next Weds. Pretty dicey whether he’ll be clear by then. This is his second time, but the first he was totally asymptomatic. This time he’s fevered — over 103 at some points yesterday, tho it’s down so far today. Poor kid. Meanwhile I have a half-dozen friends locally who either have it now or have had it in the last month. (Plus me, who had it 6 weeks ago. I’m still masking etc around my son because I know you can actually get reinfection in short order, especially with a lot of exposure.)

Not much of this is showing up in our official case counts of course, but there appears to be a shit ton of it around. Our hospitalizations ARE trending up — the only real barometer we have left — but still pretty low so hopefully most people’s cases are being managed ok at home.

Finally tested positive this morning after dodging it 3.5 years. It’s funny, a couple weeks ago I made a Walgreens appointment for a booster shot, having some instinct to do it (whether or not I would qualify — have gotten previous boosters immediately as they became available).

Was out in the 100-degree heat in Portland yesterday, and thought I was overheated last night: woozy, hot, dehydrated. But did the test this morn to make sure.

underwater as a compliment (Eazy), Monday, 14 August 2023 15:38 (eight months ago) link

(Oh, and I didn’t follow through with that Walgreens appointment, talking myself out of it by knowing I wasn’t eligible yet for a new boosters, so would’ve just hoped they were handing them out without checking closely.)

underwater as a compliment (Eazy), Monday, 14 August 2023 15:40 (eight months ago) link

Sorry to hear it, Eazy. I hope it's a mild case.

I lied to get a second bivalent booster in March 2023.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 14 August 2023 15:45 (eight months ago) link

Thanks, Alfred. The first day was a blur -- mostly asleep/groggy and in bed, a mix of fever and shivers, and then the fever broke overnight (in a gigantic pool of sweat) and I was lucid again the next morning.

Been OK since then, hoping it keeps diminishing. Just congestion, and have had a temperature go up and down from normal to 101. Main issue is living with someone (for the first time in years) and being cautious not to give it to them, while they also stay home so as not to transmit it to the world.

underwater as a compliment (Eazy), Thursday, 17 August 2023 04:35 (eight months ago) link

officially positive as of yesterday. stay safe out there!

, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 13:18 (eight months ago) link

For sure, seems to be making the general rounds again.

Fwiw my own case was mild by any standard, but despite pretty much no or minimal coughing, my cardio-vascular recovery has been curiously slow. I feel fine, but I can also sense that my body is not quite at full capacity. I've heard this from a few folks, that for whatever reason even recovery from mild cases can take longer than expected.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 13:47 (eight months ago) link

So I'm pretty sure this bug I've had for the last week or so is Covo. Not been terrible, just ambient symptoms making life hard.

One thing I'm finding is difficulty to focus my vision along with eye-floaters, and I'm not sure if this is symptomatic of Covid, or just so happens that my eyesight is just getting bad.

Can't find much online about eyesight being affected by Covid. It certianly wasn't when I had it before. Anyone else experienced this?

It’s so alienating

I’m comfortable with the assumption that everyone at my work thinks I’m crazy

There was an all hands yesterday where the CEO was joking with a couple of lower level people about how “their whole team got COVID” while visiting a factory in Mexico. As an illustration of how much team spirit they have and why they are getting a special recognition award. Haha lol we all got Covid at work.

Fuck youuuuu

I definitely feel like I recovered from typical symptoms but I am still fuzzy in the head and coughy in the throat - years past my first bout and months past my second.

Plus the psychosocial "covid broke society" stuff

I don't know what to do about it but there it is.

it really says a lot about how contagious this shit is that I got COVID pretty much immediately after adding our first house-sharing roommate in many years

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Thursday, 26 October 2023 17:32 (six months ago) link

Good luck, sleeve. Just went on a school tour where we were two of three parents across four different tour groups who were masking. I think in the half dozen classrooms we visited there were half a dozen kids wearing a mask total. I'm sure most people out there regard me as worrying too much (at best), but I just prefer to keep kicking the covid can down the road.

the agonizing lower back pain has finally subsided. I have retained taste/smell throughout. thank god we have a hot tub.

I refuse to even look at the idiotic masking thread anymore (possibly the worst ILX thread ever created), but I feel compelled to note that I got COVID for one reason and one reason only - PEOPLE NOT WEARING THEIR FUCKING MASKS
