yeah this seems to be real - the account is in a few FB music groups I'm in, and it seems convincing enough to make me believe it's definitely her own personal/private profile. Really fucking grim when you consider that so much of her profile is based on leaning into being the "hip" choice of gay icon, it feels like the LGBT+ audience are worthy of using for acclaim and profit but not affording autonomy and respect to.

yeah, this is from her Facebook page, and I mean "her" page - her own private profile, not the page you can like and follow her as a fan of an artist. I've seen her pop up in threads on groups like W0rld 0F Ech0es and in the comments of mutual friends, not just recently but a good few times over the years. Much as I would love for this to be fake I don't have much doubt at all about it being real.

someone on that Twitter thread describing this as her "Donna Summer" moment and it does feel apt. She could have kept this private opinion to herself, and been this awful, with the fanbase being none the wiser. The fact she felt compelled to make this comment despite being fully aware it could be screenshotted and shared tells me how little she actually values the fanbase that she's built over the past thirty years.

I'm pretty gutted by this to be honest. This is someone that I would classify as an all-time favourite artist and I have to agree with boxedjoy that it seems especially perverse that she would hold these views when the queer community constitute such a large part of her fanbase.

Her posts are now being boosted by Glinner and his TERF armies, so unless she unequivocally apologises for her ignorance, then frankly I'll...have to check out of this album campaign, unfortunately, and re-evaluate how I engage with her work generally.

I haven't looked at the financials of Big Pharma lately but someone should tell Roisin that with the worldwide international trampling of medical care for trans people, it is doubtful that anyone is making a buck these days on puberty blockers

She has been atypically radio silent at least on Instagram, she'd better come back with an actually sincere and humble mea culpa, taking full responsibility, and what I hope is a genuine willingness to be a better person. I hope it's not empty ass covering bs crafted by a crisis response team.

As I told my kid this morning in an unrelated conversation, sometimes people you like will deeply disappoint you and sometimes to the point of no return.

She tweeted 'Do you believe in Free Will?' on the 22nd. And she talks about kids being confused - not aware of her talking about kids needing protection from the biggest abusers and predators out there.

really hope so - she's one of my favourite most listened to artists over the last 25 years and still making great stuff and with a new album imminent that was promising now ruined and leaving me wondering just what disturbingly high % of my favourites are just one stupid post away from exposure over this particular issue

yeah she'll either offer a real apology or double down. my money's on the latter unfortunately :(. just trying to hedge off disappointment. i'm a fan just because, at its best, her songwriting really captures complex emotional states. and her choice of producers or remixers is always superlative for a dance floor. re: being "nasty" to her queer fans, i shouldn't have said that. all i remember is reading something in some interview somewhere where someone was asking her if she considers what her queer fans want her to do, and she basically said no, she doesn't think about that at all. of course that's all iirc, i'm not going to hunt it down haha. so less being nasty to a queer fanbase, more 'doing art and not caring what anyone thinks about it' which has always been her thing anyway afaict.

disappointed but too numb to be devastated by now and there's too much great queer music to waste any more time with hers

i really question, based on her particular lifestyle, how much time she ever spent directly interacting with LGBTQ folks or operating in spaces w/them. there are plenty of great pop musicians who do, and are actually strong allies and supporters and actual members of that community, so...idk it sucks. i agree w/map about the emotional intelligence of her work, which is what makes it more shocking in a way. for others "i don't care what people think" is manifested in better ways, like maren morris going off at transphobes within country music without any fear.

like i mean her life just seems like that of a person who has a very regimented set of places she goes to, i just don't sense cultural curiosity as much as a lot about herself. i don't mean that LGBTQ folks don't live in England or Ireland or Ibiza obv. i might be projecting though, unfairly on those who are similar to her in superficial ways.
