more smoke here regarding where this appears to be headed… contrary to the early conventional wisdom regarding his value, herro having to extend last summer before the new CBA is gonna have him on a very digestible deal moving forward. i really like the idea of him on either of these teams honestly

afaics, dame's added leverage has been that he chose to frame his 'trade request' as a non-negotiable demand and then making both implicit and explicit threats about his future behavior if his exact demand wasn't met.

yeah but most of that's a bluff, when the blazers say "we want good stuff" they aren't bluffing, they really want good stuff!

dame’s leverage is that it makes no sense for the blazers to bring him back given where their roster is at. notice that cronin said that he’s willing for it to take months but he said nothing about not executing a trade — if the idea of bringing dame back was a legitimate threat i’m sure he would be levying it, given the way this is playing out. compare to the way morey was talking about simmons & the hardline stance the nets took on KD from the jump. i think cronin understands that dame going back there would be a ridiculous situation

if the blazers had i.e. chet holmgren and brandon miller dame’s role on the team would be largely unchanged and forcing him to come back and play would actually aid the development of their young players. instead they picked two guards and so dame’s presence on the court will only detract from their development. they need to move on and cronin knows this, but he has the summer to drag it out and it’s perfectly reasonable for him to try and use that to his advantage. but he does not have an infinite trade window

and if the only team willing to hold onto all its assets and wait into the season to get dame is miami then portland’s leverage decreases not increases

basically all this wont end until dame goes to pelicans

at this point some saudi team is going to offer a $500m transfer fee

breaking dame has been traded to the pelicans of new orleans

at the same time there hasn't been any whispers of him going elsewhere so it's prob fine

it is an interesting test case, potentially, for the idea that in the new CBA you can't just give every good to great player the full max just bcuz they're eligible for it and want it

yeah thats what the local guys have been saying too, and i do think resigning him is the most likely outcome, but idk seems kinda weird

hes at that awkward level where hes good but overrated by box score stats / all-nba status so you can't really prove hes not worth the supermax to the people who matter, even if he isnt

obv you have to do it though as a true contending team

theoretically a team could sign a guy for more than the max but less than the full supermax, guy still gets more than he can elsewhere and the team save a lil bit, not sure if itll ever happen except maybe in a hometown discount sort of way
