yeah like i said yesterday i think the parameters of this deal are agreed on, the blazers telling woj that they're canvassing the league is kayfabe & all sides are just trying to squeeze the heat & the heat are taking the position of, he's ending up here so we have the leverage
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:06 (nine months ago) link
i dont see what the rush is for portland, hes under contract for 4 years and they are tanking
― slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:08 (nine months ago) link
yea if he hadn't gone back to Cleveland I think people would look at him a lot differently. also the fact that he was compared to MJ constantly gave my generation a constant need to dislike or doubt him, and The Decision gave us a reason
― frogbs, Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:09 (nine months ago) link
if u think abt when jordan retired the first time he was running from the grind, then when he came back he was ring-chasing
― slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:10 (nine months ago) link
no one really has any rings
one thing with kd is people could really sense the weakness, thats a lot of what kept the narrative going so to speak
― lag∞n, Thursday, July 6, 2023 12:59 PM (six minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink
yeah the burner account didnt help either. the timing was also peak twitter clowning (warriors blown 3-1 lead)

yeah waiting it out is the obvs best move for them
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:14 (nine months ago) link
we're getting into major revisionist history territory here about KD. let's remember some major events that immediately precipitated him joining the warriors
1. the warriors set the record for most wins in NBA history2. the warriors directly beat KD's team in the playoffs in a series where KD's team was up 3-23. the warriors blow a 3-1 lead in the most embarrassing finals loss of a generation 4. the cap spikes for one season allowing leaguewide player movement that everyone understands going in is a one-time only anomaly
the idea that two sides (warriors and KD) that just suffered hugely damaging losses were able to use a fluke offseason to team up and vanquish their demons w/o having to actually overcome them in a genuine way is what irked, and still irks people, about that team. KD is never living it down bcuz of those specific variables. for several reasons it's a situation that will never be repeated. if dame goes to miami it bares only the most surface level resemblance to KD and the warriors ("team that loses the finals acquires a star player").
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:16 (nine months ago) link
the thunder were up 3-1 on the dubs fyi
― nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:17 (nine months ago) link
i dont disagree with you at all i just dont think it will be seen as that different by the avg nba consumer if he ends up on the heat
― nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:19 (nine months ago) link
also the warriors won before and after kd so that hurts his legacy even more. plus draymond literally telling him to his face they didnt need him lol.
― nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:20 (nine months ago) link
that was so rude draymond is mean
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:20 (nine months ago) link
the kd sitch was special in a lot of ways but that doesnt mean dame isnt gonna get tagged if he forces his way to miami
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:21 (nine months ago) link
idk the KD siutation was probably one of the most ridiculous things to happen in the NBA, big difference between a team that set an all-time win record and one that made the Finals through a series of fluke shooting performances and insane clutch time runs. plus there's the fact that the Dubs also exploited a loophole for Curry, the whole thing was so unfair and lame
― frogbs, Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:32 (nine months ago) link
i think what dame is giving up is his reputation as a great player who didn't win anything but was on a team that typically doesn't win anything and so we were recognizing his greatness without penalizing him for only making it to the conference finals once. which was a nice, low pressure place for him to be. now that he is setting the expectation of winning a title, there will be blowback if he isn't able to do that. he's putting himself out there.
but i think if he actually does win it all it will be all fair in love and war
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:41 (nine months ago) link
the biggest problem is he shoulda done this 3-4 seasons ago
― nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:49 (nine months ago) link
the warriors thing was a total blip but the basketball gods got their retribution in 2019
― nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:50 (nine months ago) link
The idea of the dame extension on top of his supermax wasn't just,'hey, let's reward him with a nice gift', but also 'let's be in control of keeping him in the corral until he's cooked'. Didn't turn out to work that way. But it's weird to see dame giving the the team his middle finger via proxy when their major sin was failure to move his buddy CJ to another team right after making the WCF, so they could theoretically sign all those free agents who didn't want to come to the blazers and kept going elsewhere, like always.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:02 (nine months ago) link
idk a star player trying to dictate his next team isn't very weird. pretty standard actually
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:22 (nine months ago) link
It has become more commonplace after Harden bolted from Houston. Much less so before that. Free agency was supposed to take care of letting players move about more freely, but the CBA has gone in the direction of "golden handcuffs" for star players, who have, in turn turned to a subdued form blackmail to implement changes of team.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:34 (nine months ago) link
supermax should have come with having to stay in place for at least like 75% of the contract terms
― nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:38 (nine months ago) link
the players never would've agreed to that
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:39 (nine months ago) link
correct
― nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:40 (nine months ago) link
you know one way for front offices to convince their players to stay is to be better at their jobs. anyone wanna guess how many all stars dame lillard played with in his career after lamarcus aldridge left portland in 2016
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:42 (nine months ago) link
the teams also want the ability to trade their guys, trades trade demands likely one of the parties is gonna be unhappy but they still want to be ability to do it when they want to
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:51 (nine months ago) link
the only thing that i thinks in poor form here is dame demanding to be traded to one team he should have a list like a normal guy and let the blazers find a good deal, the timing where he waited until they maxed out grant was bad too tbh tho grant prob liked it lol, the other stuff with as far as staying with the blazers forever and being weird about it is just dumb and annoying but ultimately not an offense
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:54 (nine months ago) link
there's conflicting reports about whether dame asked for the trade before or after they did the grant deal. i think the blazers see grant as a fit on the wing next to their young guys & think he's now a tradable asset under their control. but maybe that's all a lie and they only did it to appease dame idk
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:57 (nine months ago) link
giving grant a max deal seems insane but also i could see a team thinking it was good so idk
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:58 (nine months ago) link
just checked and had no idea he had such a good season. 47/40/82 splits
― nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Thursday, 6 July 2023 22:13 (nine months ago) link
that is nice
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 July 2023 22:21 (nine months ago) link
congrats to klutch sports ceo rich paul
Atlanta Hawks All-Star Dejounte Murray and CEO of Klutch Sports Rich Paul are finalizing a four-year, $120 million veteran maximum extension with the franchise, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Deal includes a player option.— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) July 6, 2023

interesting!
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 6 July 2023 22:24 (nine months ago) link
that feels low for him, he must really want to be in atlanta dang. he took the same exact deal as tyler herro. $87m less than desmond bane!

the wings at Magic City are a major draw iirc
― Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Thursday, 6 July 2023 22:30 (nine months ago) link
says its his maximum, dejounte probably couldnt get a huge deal based on bird rights bc his original deal was so modest is my guess
― slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Thursday, 6 July 2023 22:42 (nine months ago) link
prob cause its an extension too mb get more if he played his contract out
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 July 2023 22:46 (nine months ago) link
yeah imo the main thing with Dane here is the years and years of clowning on his peers for asking for trades to competitors and then doing exactly that in the narrowest of fashions with an nba finals team. I’m pretty sure he recorded songs about it &c. there’s some ass-showing and hypocrisy of high order here.
― Clay, Thursday, 6 July 2023 22:50 (nine months ago) link
it’s his max from the hawks but he could’ve gotten whatever offer in the UFA market
Wow, I'm surprised. Thought Murray could possibly have made quite a bit more as UFA next summer, but takes the immediate security of the bag instead. New extension rules (40% raise, extra year) helped grease this. https://t.co/8h5w34ZD8B— John Hollinger (@johnhollinger) July 6, 2023
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 6 July 2023 22:52 (nine months ago) link
yeah id prob just take the $100m+ im kind of conservative like that
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 July 2023 23:13 (nine months ago) link
he had a major, major injury as a young guy that could have derailed his career, i wonder if that played into him grabbing this extension now
― call all destroyer, Friday, 7 July 2023 00:08 (nine months ago) link
apparently the dillon brooks deal w houston is becoming a fairly complicated multi team trade in which houston is sending out 5 second round picks. one senses the front office there feels like they’re getting fired if they aren’t in the playoff mix this year
THREE second rounders to OKC??? That makes it a total of FIVE second rounders going out in order to facilitate a Brooks S&T that (currently) doesn't even help generate much extra cap room! This team BETTER make some good use of the extra cap room before the S&T is completed. https://t.co/oOivkD6fhh— David Weiner (@BimaThug) July 6, 2023
― J0rdan S., Friday, 7 July 2023 00:14 (nine months ago) link
then why are they getting dillon brooks haha
― lag∞n, Friday, 7 July 2023 00:35 (nine months ago) link
i mean if you have to go from worst team in the league to in the playoffs in one off-season or lose your job you just have to take an 80 million dollar flyer on the most annoying guy in the league who everybody hates also he isn't very good and you definitely send out some picks to do it, this is common wisdom

PICKS TRADE: The Memphis Grizzlies are trading three second-round picks to the Phoenix Suns for two first-round pick swaps (2024 and 2030) and Isaiah Todd, sources tell ESPN. The seconds are 2025 via Pels, and Memphis’ 2028 and 2029 picks.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) July 7, 2023
