hard to tell on zinger his season last year was probably worth 30 mil butwho is he really

ciderpress, Monday, 26 June 2023 14:10 (ten months ago) link

yeah i think when you factor in the injury risk and the fact that hes prob not good in all playoff configurations its like 20

lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 14:12 (ten months ago) link

i simply would not have acquired him personally, it might work out but pretty big risk all things considered

lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 14:13 (ten months ago) link

idk i think marcus smart is also a risky player who the celtics happen to have gottne the best out of so far

ciderpress, Monday, 26 June 2023 14:29 (ten months ago) link

i think hes pretty reliable for the rest of his deal but then youd have a decision for sure

lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 14:36 (ten months ago) link

well well

Damian Lillard has “serious interest” in joining the Heat, per @sam_amick (https://t.co/joKmf5vvfV):

“Lillard indeed has serious interest in joining the Heat, who would surely love to pair him with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.”

portland can prob get more than what miami has to offer just depends on if they want to send dame to where he wants i guess

lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 15:20 (ten months ago) link

it was sorta off handed but on the new simmons/rusillo pod bill mentioned the celtics extending zinger for 2/70 or thereabouts. he didn’t preface it by saying it was real info so maybe it was just pure personal speculation but i feel like it was prob informed by stuff he’s heard to some degree

it would scare me as the celtics to do any zinger extension before they see how he fits w/ the roster but if it’s a short term deal like that he’d prob still be tradable so long as he was holding up physically

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 15:25 (ten months ago) link

35 a year for zinger seems way out of hand

lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 15:26 (ten months ago) link

it’s basically saying that he’s properly valued on his current deal which i’m not sure i’d agree with tho in reality any player who isn’t taking a raise on their next contract is admitting to some degree that their value is less than it was the last time they signed. so i guess that would line up more w what i think of zinger but overall the number seems quite high for him

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 15:33 (ten months ago) link

the one issue i see with the heat & blazers is just that, while i think herro + 3 firsts should have real value across the league, portland is one of the worst roster fits for herro of any team — maybe the worst, as a team that won’t be trying to win & is already overloaded w/ scoring guards. so the blazers either have to find other stuff they value on the heat’s roster, or, more realistically i think, the two teams would have to find a third team willing to give up a pick or young player at a diff position for herro. i don’t think it’s impossible — esp w/ a player of dame’s status the league seems to collectively figure these trades out when push comes to shove— but it does make the deal more complicated

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 15:33 (ten months ago) link

i think the heat only have two firsts they can trade

lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 15:36 (ten months ago) link

but still they should trade kat #tradekat

― lag∞n, Monday, June 26, 2023 9:03 AM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink

I don't get the sense it's happening before the season, obviously KAT was out most of last year so there's a feeling it would be selling low. I think they still want to see if it can work w/Rudy and KAT.

however, it's hard not to read signing Naz as an insurance policy if they want to blow it up, trade KAT, and rebuild around Ant and Jaden (apparently there were tons of offers coming in for Jaden that were rebuffed).

I suppose they correctly assume that Gobert is untradeable at this point, and if we're talking about Naz and where his skills overlap, it's definitely with KAT and not Rudy.

the weird thing about Connelly is that I actually think the rest of the stuff he's done aside from Gobert ("other than than, how did you like the play, Mrs. Lincoln?") has been pretty savvy and seems to fit what I thought he was going to bring - drafting well, identifying good deals on the margins). Like the deal to get rid of D-Lo (Mike Conley, NAW, and 3 second rounders) was great, people seem to love their deal to move up for Leonard Miller, signing Kyle Anderson on a good contract. And, obviously, even though we didn't keep him, identifying Walker Kessler, Jr. as being way better than people thought

that's all the stuff I assumed he would do, which makes the Gobert deal even more frustrating because it takes the tools that Connelly needs to do the things he's good at (making good draft picks, using resources to make smart non-blockbuster moves to improve the roster).

I still wonder how much was driven by Lore and A-Rod.

suspect the rudy trade was more of an ownership move than it was connellys doing fwiw

lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 15:39 (ten months ago) link

it’s prob true that connelly got a mandate from new ownership to “contend,” which if that means consistently make the playoffs isn’t crazy given where KAT is in his career. and from what ppl have always said the connelly front office decided that the way to maximize KAT was to move him off 5 — maybe once the deal was getting worked out ownership pushed to close it & the wolves threw in more than they needed to, but i think it’s a bit of a fantasy to picture a rod coming in and saying “ok great now let’s go get rudy gobert come hell or high water.” i just think it was a big misevaluation on connelly’s part

i also don’t think gobert is untradable per se, just that the return would be so light compared to what they sent out that he’s kinda untradable from a PR perspective. he also is prob a better fit w ant than KAT is

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 15:47 (ten months ago) link

it was the other guy not arod, known nba stats appreciator

lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 15:48 (ten months ago) link

connelly drafted nurkic, jokic, juan hernangomez in the lottery two years into jokic’s career, traded another lottery pick (donovan mitchell) for trey lyles… i wouldn’t discount the idea that the man just really likes bigs and got out over his skis on this one

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 16:06 (ten months ago) link

it was entirely predictable but also funny that the two teams who went all in on going big last offseason are now having their summers defined by whether they can trade one of those bigs to balance out their rosters

ESPN Sources: The Hawks are finalizing a trade to send F/C John Collins to the Jazz for Rudy Gay and a future second-round pick. Atlanta’s largely unloading Collins’ three years, $78M for some roster building flexibility and alignment with looming changes to salary cap. pic.twitter.com/CpAfTNXKMq

hawks finally traded him lol

lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 17:49 (ten months ago) link

lol hawks better have some trades lined up bc they lost him for fucking nothing

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Monday, 26 June 2023 17:56 (ten months ago) link

feels like theyve been stuck in the middle for 20 years

Atlanta was entering the area that no first-round playoff team desires, the second apron.

The deal puts Atlanta now below the luxury tax and gives them flexibility to extend Dejounte Murray, Saddiq Bey and Onyeka Okongwu.

The 3 players are free agents in 2024.

i don’t understand utah’s motivation for doing this with nothing attached as a sweetener

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 18:00 (ten months ago) link

ainge maybe thinks he can build his value and flip him for something better later?

Spottie, Monday, 26 June 2023 18:01 (ten months ago) link

The deal to acquire Collins delivers the Jazz a versatile forward to play alongside All-Star Lauri Markkanen and All-Rookie center Walker Kessler. The Hawks and Jazz have discussed numerous iterations of the deal for over a year.

— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) June 26, 2023

i’m assuming this is woj just parroting utah’s spin but i read stuff like this and i’m like, am i watching the same NBA as everyone else? is there a shadow realm NBA that is the “real” NBA where having a big man log jam is a good idea & what i’m watching is a parallel reality meant to distract me from what’s really going on

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 18:02 (ten months ago) link

ainge knows the trade market better than me so i’ll fall back but it seems like a real passion project to acquire a guy who basically played with a sign reading “please trade for this guy — hawks mgmt” taped to his back for 2 years with the goal of trading him again for more value. i wouldn’t put it past ainge but even when collins was playing well nobody wanted him. that said the bar to clear for flipping him for more value than they gave up is basically on the floor

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 18:07 (ten months ago) link

isnt collins' shooting hand like permanently fucked up?

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Monday, 26 June 2023 18:08 (ten months ago) link

that’s a good question. it definitely was fucked up last year but i hadn’t read that it was a longterm issue

i wonder if chris haynes & dame have a shared gmail calendar

ainge was prob just like "free guy" re john collins

lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 18:19 (ten months ago) link

yeah you’re probably right. they must have exhausted other options for that cap space & decided this was the best move. i just don’t buy the idea that they’ve acquired a versatile frontcourt piece to pair with their two stars or whatever such nonsense

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 June 2023 18:21 (ten months ago) link

i can't say i buy that either but he's not untalented and i think they may just want to take a shot at rehabbing his value

call all destroyer, Monday, 26 June 2023 18:24 (ten months ago) link

i thought bey looked good for the hawks last year. this roster construction — two guards, two centers, everyone else — makes a lot more sense, even if the talent itself still doesn’t give me tons of hope that they can be more than first round cannon fodder

ainge was prob just like "free guy" re john collins

― lag∞n, Monday, June 26, 2023 11:19 AM (five minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

his contract isnt like insanely bad either, def a good number to throw in the mix for bigger trades

Spottie, Monday, 26 June 2023 18:27 (ten months ago) link

the blazers better act conscience-free when the dame trade demand comes.

call all destroyer, Monday, 26 June 2023 18:29 (ten months ago) link

Remember how often teams have cited the "repeater tax" as the reason they had to cut salary when they weren't even on year 1 of paying the tax? The dreaded "second Apron" is going to justify a lot of cost-cutting moves for teams that were never going that high in the tax anyway.

it's such a scary apron

ciderpress, Monday, 26 June 2023 18:33 (ten months ago) link

youre like one apron ok makes sense i think i can deal, but then boom a second one

lag∞n, Monday, 26 June 2023 18:35 (ten months ago) link

depends on if they want to send dame to where he wants

it helps ease the pain a bit that Miami doesn't play against the blazers in the west. not sure how the heat can match salaries without tossing in end-of-bench players the blazers don't really want. and their picks are consistently in the non-lottery tier.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 26 June 2023 18:42 (ten months ago) link

if this is a bradley beal type situation where he’s like “yeah miami or brooklyn whatever works for you guys” i think dame ends up in brooklyn. but if he says “i want miami” i think they’ll do what he asks
