james jones easiest job in the league right now

Spottie, Monday, 19 June 2023 19:21 (ten months ago) link

in some ways, but easiest =/= most job security

In the interview, Paul seemed caught off guard by the trade. He said he spoke to James Jones yesterday. pic.twitter.com/IF4xMI5wCP

Does Isiah actually have a job with the Suns organization? Or is he just tight with Ishbia? I'm thinking it's the latter, unless something has happened recently.

CP3 is 38. His salary for the next two seasons when he'll be 39 & 40 years old:

- 2023-24 = $30,800,000, with $15,800,000 guaranteed, becoming fully guaranteed on 6/28/23.

- 2024-25 = $30,000,000, non-guaranteed, becoming fully guaranteed on 6/28/24.

Surely he understood from the start that those terms always meant he'd be standing on shaky ground after this season ended, unless he was playing like a top ten player.

i spent a bunch of today driving around listening to various reactions to the beal trade, which was interesting. a lot of the more positive takes make 2 points--1) they aren't any more screwed now than they were before as far as the second apron and punitive things down the road and 2) they turned chris paul, who they were going to wave, into beal and how can you argue with that?

i get these points and i guess it was a very unique situation with beal's no trade and the need to do this now before the new cba kicks in, so maybe taking issue with the on-court fit is missing the point, but i feel strongly that it's a rough fit. when you're saying things like this will help free up kevin durant to put more effort toward defense and rebounding, which is something nate duncan actually said, you're getting a little galaxy brain and not just stating the obvious which is that the suns are spending like 90 million on identical shooting guards.

the other thing is that yeah this team will have a great offense, but i'm not sure it's that hard to have a great offense? the sacramento kings just finished a season as the best offense in the nba, their best player is maybe the 20th best player in the league?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 02:27 (ten months ago) link

defense is still somehow underrated in the league

this is very true, and also due to having a playmaking guard (fox) paired with a passing big operating at the top of the key (sabonis) which is pretty much the nugs formula for generating offense.

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Tuesday, 20 June 2023 03:11 (ten months ago) link

yeah I’m not sure I see it, with beal you’re committing yourself to more years and sort of capping your medium-term upside for a guy with a redundant skill set. and the amount of passing talent on that team is pretty concerning imo

k3vin k., Tuesday, 20 June 2023 03:11 (ten months ago) link

i bet their offense won't even be tops

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 03:18 (ten months ago) link

their main guys are not going to play enough!

k3vin k., Tuesday, 20 June 2023 03:18 (ten months ago) link

as i understand it the suns are going to be in the second apron for the next two years basically no matter what, then they'll need to be out for the three years after that to avoid the really bad stuff, i'm sure that will have no unexpected implications lol

having a pick from like 4-10 feels like a total crapshoot

wild how every single team situation KD's gotten himself into since the Thunder has been deeply strange on some level

i'd say you have to draft for need in a year like this but every guy is a 6'7" wing who purportedly does the same stuff give or take

Clay, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 03:42 (ten months ago) link

yeah no guards, no centers, it definitely gets subjective quick

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 03:46 (ten months ago) link

i dont know that this is true tho, amen and ausar are literal twins but amen is coming in as a big PG and ausar is a wing. anthony black will be playing point in the NBA. jarace walker is ostensibly a big if not a C. lively could go as high as 10 to dallas as a rim-protecting center. hendricks is a sharp-shooting stretch 4.

i think a lot of teams could address needs if they decide to draft for fit, i guess i'd chalk some of this up to teams that are trying to figure out if they have a meaningful core to build around or need to keep swinging for all-star scoring upside (DET and HOU esp) are followed by teams who definitely need to swing for all-star upside but are going to eat the leftovers of the lottery (IND, WAS, UTA) unless they trade up.

passive aggressively forcing dame to demand a trade

"Blazers have started to maybe indicate that they won't trade the No. 3 pick... Dame does not want a youth movement, he wants to play with veterans... [Portland] is causing a bit of an issue there with Damian Lillard."

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 14:39 (ten months ago) link

one good prospect isnt really a youth movement

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 14:44 (ten months ago) link

simons sharpe #3... whoever they can get for dame, whoever they can get for their other vets

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 14:46 (ten months ago) link

add #3 pick to simons and sharpe and that's a youth movement

ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 20 June 2023 14:46 (ten months ago) link

is dame dissatisfied with simons and sharpe

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 14:48 (ten months ago) link

they do have a lot of guards i guess

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 14:50 (ten months ago) link

seems like dame is maybe going to get traded

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 14:55 (ten months ago) link

portland has always had a lot of guards

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 20 June 2023 15:31 (ten months ago) link

they should check out: forwards

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 15:32 (ten months ago) link

great position imo one of them best

almost as good as center

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 15:35 (ten months ago) link

thats where the big men play

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 15:37 (ten months ago) link

just making the team untenable for dame is a decent strategy, everyone would come out looking ok

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 15:51 (ten months ago) link

this whole thing feels increasingly ridiculous... there is no way for them to acquire a significant veteran player w/ the third pick this year unless they're sitting there on the clock and scoot is available. no one wants brandon miller or cam whitmore that much. i'd have to assume the team that is actually fielding the trade requests the blazers want is the hornets

i guess from dame's perspective what's another few weeks of back and forth but.... how much longer can the world spend talking about whether he wants to be traded or not? like...

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 June 2023 16:04 (ten months ago) link

floating that they’re trying to acquire bam adebayo is great “see???? we’re trying!!!” type of stuff

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 16:08 (ten months ago) link

dame is obv an all-timer and a lot of fun to watch when he's rolling, but it feels like he'll be forced to confront how the limits of his talent (not to mention age+contract) clash with the image in his mind that he can ever contend in portland

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Tuesday, 20 June 2023 16:27 (ten months ago) link

in the last like 25 years of basketball what even is the history of trading a top 3 pick -- not a pick that turned into a top 3 pick but a pick where everyone knew the draft slot -- for a veteran player?

in 2001 the clippers traded no 2 pick tyson chandler to the bulls for elton brand, so there's one

in 2005 the wizards traded the no 5 pick (ended up becoming ricky rubio) for mike miller and randy foye

in 2013 the pelicans traded no 6 pick nerlens noel for jrue holiday *but* they also had to throw a second first in so idk if that counts, tho for the right player i'm sure the blazers would throw in an extra pick

in 2019 the suns traded the no 6 pick for dario saric and the no 11 pick but i don't think that counts

can anyone remember others? what the blazers are trying to do feels pretty ahistorical. maybe whoever made that deal for the clippers 22 years ago is still bouncing around the NBA somewhere...

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 June 2023 16:29 (ten months ago) link

so I’ve listened to basically all the podcasts now and I have to say I’m flabbergasted, like does anyone understand how the NBA works? there’s a salary cap…you can’t really have a contender with a main guy who is significantly less valuable than his contract. what’s the history of a guy like beal playing on a champion? I just took a look at the previous 15 championship teams or so and arguably the two most overpaid key players are michael porter jr and klay…and those are players who give you more than just offense and are also parts of complete teams. beal is making 43 million next year and it only gets worse from there, and that’s before you even get into the fit issues with this team and complete lack of depth. it’s a disaster imo

k3vin k., Tuesday, 20 June 2023 16:55 (ten months ago) link

higher than the sun(s)

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Tuesday, 20 June 2023 17:01 (ten months ago) link

funny thing is the suns were actually fucked when they made the kd trade, beal deal doesnt move the needle that much, tho it does prolong the pain

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 17:04 (ten months ago) link

that’s the thing I think people are missing…chris paul was underperforming his contract but it was much shorter and not guaranteed, aka somewhat tradeable, but worst case he’s a good fit with the roster. instead you turn that into…the worst contract in the NBA! a guy who in absolute terms is a comparable player to paul but a worse fit, completely unreadable, AND fucks the extended booker/KD window

k3vin k., Tuesday, 20 June 2023 17:08 (ten months ago) link

beal keeps his no-trade clause!

k3vin k., Tuesday, 20 June 2023 17:08 (ten months ago) link

i mean i guess waiving cp3 wouldve been the smart thing to do but theyd still have no way to put together a contender around kd

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 17:08 (ten months ago) link

doubt there was another cp3 trade that makes them better at basketball

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 June 2023 17:11 (ten months ago) link
