wonder if even very good players like siakim will stop progressing up the max contract ladder

lag∞n, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:06 (ten months ago) link

ok good luck everyone

Just In: The Washington Wizards and Bradley Beal will work together to find a trade for the three-time All-Star if the team elects to reset the roster in the near future, league sources tell me and @JoshuaBRobbins.

kinda expecting the cavs to pop off next year like win 55-60 games they had the 2nd best scoring differential this year and their guys are all aging in, not aging out. playoffs idk but i think its unlikely toronto is better than them without picking up a major piece

ciderpress, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:08 (ten months ago) link

yeah everyones down on them cause they went out like dogs in the offs but i still like their core, tho they do have some work to do around that, obvs still a lot of questions like can mobley play center but still

lag∞n, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:10 (ten months ago) link

i would def bet on the cavs being better than the raptors but it's not outlandish to think the raptors could finish above them

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:12 (ten months ago) link

i havent looked at what the new cba is like btu guys like tobias harris, bradley beal, siakam were already traps under the current one really

ciderpress, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:15 (ten months ago) link

if theres a max salary then you need the guys who are so good that the max is an underpay, not the guys who are worth exactly the max

ciderpress, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:18 (ten months ago) link

that harris contract was survivable for the sixers, under the new cba idk

lag∞n, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:18 (ten months ago) link

in a cap league its too hard to keep up with teams who are underpaying their players see those warriors contracts from 5 years ago or w/e

ciderpress, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:19 (ten months ago) link

the sixers weren't even into the tax this year. i can't remember what their team building constraints were if they were a tax team vs non tax team, it seems like daryl was prob just doing ownership a solid. but they did have more money to spend, in theory

would be hard to more accurately define the statement "easier said than done" than you did here...

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:23 (ten months ago) link

in conclusion they should let teams pay one guy 70% of the cap if they really want to. it would be funny

ciderpress, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:23 (ten months ago) link

new cba going all in on parity, could be cool idk, def going to force some good teams to be broken up which fans will prob not like

― lag∞n, Wednesday, June 14, 2023 1:00 PM (six minutes ago)

i'm worried that the combo of no real free agency + new luxury tax penalties + number of teams already w/ constrained assets/crazy caps is going to kill player movement. i guess there is always player movement. but you look a few years into the future w/ a lot of these teams & you're just like, what could possibly even be the realistic plan here

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:23 (ten months ago) link

no good players hitting free agency is definitely a bummer

ciderpress, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:25 (ten months ago) link

just look at boston and miami, two contending teams with fanbases who are reasonably taking the position of "how can we push ourselves over the top?"

ok well each team has a super max player & a second player who is imminently signing for another $50m a year. so you've already eaten up like 80% of the cap w/ two players. so now what you're either riding it out w/ your roster or making tweaks to the role player rotation. how are you keeping your contending roster intact while also adding to it, without triggering insane penalties that basically no owner is going to abide by? lillard is not ending up in miami if bam is also getting an extension from them. i don't see how bradley beal ends up on a contending team, period

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:30 (ten months ago) link

the new CBA goes crazy on teams when they get $17m over the tax -- here are the teams that were at least $17m over the tax this year

clippers ($40 million over)
warriors (+38m)
bucks (+29m)
celtics (+26m)
mavs (+23m)
suns (+22m)
lakers (+17m)

the other two teams that paid the tax were

nuggets (+10m)
nets (+9m

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:35 (ten months ago) link

lol clippers

i guess im okay with the idea of making it near impossible for a team to have 3 max players but idk what the best execution of that is

ciderpress, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:36 (ten months ago) link

the nba jam era where every team has 2 main guys

― ciderpress, Wednesday, June 14, 2023 1:36 PM (thirty-five seconds ago)

the league is still haunted by the heatles but the thing is no team w/ 3 max players has ever actually ran the league

the heatles ran the east but went 2-2 in the finals. the warriors ran the league w/ 4 max(-ish) players but that was a historical anomaly based on the one year cap spike. if they had just smoothed that out you actually would have had an incredibly competitive top of the league w/ the big 3 warriors, big 3 cavs, KD/russ thunder, harden/cp rockets

i think you could easily argue that big 3s are good for the league -- you get star concentration so you have marquee teams but it's still pretty hard to win over and over w/ a roster that top heavy

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:47 (ten months ago) link

the parity era will be good for "competition" but star concentration -- or at least the dominance of 1-2 teams at a certain time -- is baked into NBA history. i'm not sure more nuggets/heat style finals (talking about players involved as opposed to outcome of the series) is exactly "good" but we'll see how it plays out

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 17:50 (ten months ago) link

in recent seasons it feels like injuries and players lost for long periods have emerged as a much greater factor in a team's success or failure than they were historically... a major side effect of the drive toward league parity?

lag∞n, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 18:00 (ten months ago) link

parity is pretty high right now and the new cba hasnt affected that at all yet has it

ciderpress, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 18:28 (ten months ago) link

i think it’s probably good in sports when there’s one team that everything revolves around. i’m thinking about my own enjoyment and not casuals, health of the league etc

maybe denver will be that for the next few years tho

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 18:28 (ten months ago) link

i think its fine for the same handful of teams to make it to the conference finals repeatedly for a few years but the finals being the same matchup 4 years in a row is probably bad. luckily we dont have that anymor enow

ciderpress, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 18:32 (ten months ago) link

seeing some wild stuff on twitter as far as what people think the wiz will be able to get for brad

No, you can’t get Bradley Beal without including Jaylen Brown. It’s going to take a star or an up-and-coming star plus draft capital. Not just whatever matching salaries #Celtics can throw at them.

— John Zannis (@John_Zannis) June 14, 2023

The deal is to do 3 way with okc... and trade smart brogdon and rob Williams Pritchard etc and three throw in celtics own first rd picks to wizards.... theb have okc trade a bunch of picks to wizards ...every1 is happy ... wizards gets huge boatload of picks ...okc gets veterans

was irritating that it was the Warriors who built a superteam on a one-time technicality, as opposed to the Cavs where it was just sheer willpower by the greatest player on the planet. but I can forgive it because Curry is so much fun to watch

something like this feels right. if it's miami they'll get herro out of it

bcuz of beal's no trade the wiz are going to get completely screwed, putting aside the value in simply dumping his salary. they can't create a market for him -- beal gets to dictate what the market is

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 19:12 (ten months ago) link

but in light of the parallel convo about cba, cap, etc, really not sure anyone wants to bite the bullet and pay bradley beal $53m in 25-26 and $57m in 26-27...

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 19:17 (ten months ago) link

hes missed a lot of games recently too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 19:21 (ten months ago) link

if you felt like you could legitimately win a title in the next two years w/ him you could justify all the money on the back end but all the teams that might be true about already have at minimum 2 extremely expensive players on their teams

the league is still haunted by the heatles but the thing is no team w/ 3 max players has ever actually ran the league

I mean I'd argue the Heatles did but yeah that was kind of a special case, LeBron is a generational talent, the front office made a lot of smart moves, also they had a really good coach which turns out to be pretty important for these teams

bigger problem for the league I think is that these teams are just unlikeable. I mean yea it's neat in the NBA that stars can join forces and make these superteams that play in unique ways but what's the point when everyone just cheers for them to lose

frogbs, Wednesday, 14 June 2023 19:32 (ten months ago) link

― lag∞n, Wednesday, June 14, 2023 3:24 PM (five minutes ago)

same and have to imagine they're on the list of beal's approved spots. the issue is butler has a 3/146 extension kicking in this season & you're getting close to bam extension time w/ the possibility of an all NBA hanging out there for him. the heat are renowned for their cap maneuvering, they've houdini'd out of worse situations than what this would prob be. but they don't have a hugely wealthy owner & very rarely pay the tax

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 19:34 (ten months ago) link

the only team i can think of that is feasibly w/in contention and where beal would actually be an upgrade over their projected second best player is philly. which is prob why bill simmons said on his podcast the other day that philly is the team he'd be watching on beal.

heat, celtics, lakers are not getting better if they swapped their second best players for beal. and adding beal to their top 2 players seems untenable financially

two others that definitely won't happen but would possibly be upgrades would be scenarios where the kings or hawks acquired beal at the expense of re-signing sabonis/dejounte

maybe there's a scenario where the bulls move on from lavine and get beal but who wants lavine it can't be washington

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 19:35 (ten months ago) link

i guess the lakers could carry beal's salary bcuz lebron isn't going to be there much longer. but i believe they have quite literally nothing to trade?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 June 2023 19:37 (ten months ago) link

herro and robinson make almost exactly the same money as brad for the same length (robison has one year less) so its kinda same diff from a tax perspective

the problem is that they prob wanna cut salary and not be deep into in the tax at all as opposed to finding a way to pay the same tax bill w/ a different combo of players
