I liked them a lot because they felt more focused and refined than the various sprawling releases that preceded them, they could be a nice cap on that era.

xxxposts - there's a 7CD "autechre remixes" compilation by someone called Laxir but it's not official obv

StanM, Thursday, 18 May 2023 19:46 (eleven months ago) link

Live date in Dublin in October. Maybe new tunes?

huh. silence from the warp & ae mailing lists.

ledge, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 06:55 (eleven months ago) link

nothing from songkick either even though i'm tracking them ffs. how did you hear about it?

ledge, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 09:15 (eleven months ago) link

StanM, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 11:12 (eleven months ago) link

https://www.songkick.com/artists/49992-autechre has it too?

StanM, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 11:14 (eleven months ago) link

yeah, it's not local to me so they didn't notify me, fair enough I guess. I don't know if there's a setting to widen the search, I'm not going to visit a different country to see them so it doesn't matter.

ledge, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 12:01 (eleven months ago) link

Nearest concert to you (in Mechelen, Belgium) : Dublin

(ok ok, I suppose in the USA that would be kinda 1 state away but us Europeans aren't used to that kind of distance)

StanM, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 15:20 (eleven months ago) link

i honestly don't know what "direction" they could go in that would be more interesting than what they did on PLUS other than .. deeper into the wilderness i guess, whatever that means, they always seem to realize what that is pretty convincingly. like i don't see them backing out of just making things really unstable in a hundred ways plus some strong emotional undercurrents.

ꙮ (map), Tuesday, 23 May 2023 16:12 (eleven months ago) link

I mean that video Sean shared of a Max patch sounded sick as hell and some interesting directions separate from PLUS/SIGN

octobeard, Wednesday, 24 May 2023 19:12 (eleven months ago) link

I recently posted in the SIGN thread I think that album is more interesting than I gave it credit for, in fact i think a lot of it could be given orchestral arrangements the same way people have tried with Aphex Twin. if it was a new Boards of Canada album I think people would be really fascinated by it

frogbs, Wednesday, 24 May 2023 19:16 (eleven months ago) link

Yeah I can see that. In retrospect I'm not as keen on those "orchestral" tracks, but they would work really well played on live instruments

Imagine F7 being played as a violin concerto

Man, listening back to this album is giving me... there must be a weird German word for the type of trauma-nostalgia that comes with being suddenly reminded of living in the lockdown era

two months pass...

It looks like there’s …. Something out on August 10?!?

But I can’t tell if it’s a new live album or tickets to new tour dates or what

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 8 August 2023 16:41 (eight months ago) link

I think it's 2022 live recordings

frogbs, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 17:03 (eight months ago) link

It’s live albums

Apologies for formatting

Thanks. The link in the AE email I received didn’t offer any clarity.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 8 August 2023 17:10 (eight months ago) link

(By which I mean, probably ridiculously, resolving for me that maybe, just maybe, CD versions of these live sets might be available instead of digital files)

*feverishly hits refresh*

i actually dreamt last night that this was out, alongside an announcement of a new album called nononononono, and a remix of a pavement live concert!

crutch of england (ledge), Thursday, 10 August 2023 08:04 (eight months ago) link

this came this morning. but i'm not quite sure what it is. the track listing includes "autechre - jnsn code gl16 - remixed by YAGE"

https://touched.bandcamp.com/merch/fsoldigital-presents-mind-maps-4-limited-cd

touched are interesting - they did those three cancer charity compilations on consecutive christmasses, the last of which had ~256 tracks in it. there were also a few compilations of anonymous tracks some of which are probably autechre (the track titles are a clue). the mind maps thing though, is physical only, no digital.

koogs, Thursday, 10 August 2023 08:17 (eight months ago) link

(by "i'm not quite sure what it is" i mean is it a compilation of YAGE remixes (although 3 aren't marked as remixes) or a mix cd or somewhere between the two. it also features humanoid, isan, fsol, scanner...)

koogs, Thursday, 10 August 2023 08:20 (eight months ago) link

here's the original of that ae track - https://touched.bandcamp.com/album/jnsn-code-gl16-spl47

koogs, Thursday, 10 August 2023 08:28 (eight months ago) link

FSOLs mind map mix series is amazing fwiw. Can't wait to check this new one

octobeard, Thursday, 10 August 2023 08:59 (eight months ago) link

(actually the orignals of those two autechre tracks on that 12" were the 2nd and 3rd touched compilations, which had 254 and 417 tracks respectively)

koogs, Thursday, 10 August 2023 09:04 (eight months ago) link

so Ae and Actress are playing in Sydney in two weeks, and I will be there, but a dinner had been organised preventing me from going. I found out today the dinner has been moved to the following night. And of course the show is sold out now.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 10 August 2023 11:55 (eight months ago) link

Interesting that suddenly all the live Autechre records of the last few years are no longer on Apple Music.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 10 August 2023 13:00 (eight months ago) link

they're still on spotify (uk), gathered under two albums now (14-15 and 16-18 sets).

still furiously refreshing ae_store.

crutch of england (ledge), Thursday, 10 August 2023 13:23 (eight months ago) link

up now (under ae_live). download only (no cd).

crutch of england (ledge), Thursday, 10 August 2023 13:56 (eight months ago) link

it wouldn't let me download the big set of live releases (got a refund) but now they've added the ones i already have and bumped the price up so i'm slightly reluctant to retry. i will get around to 16-18 eventually.

koogs, Thursday, 10 August 2023 13:57 (eight months ago) link

(actually, looking now, the price has dropped £11 (iirc) for the big set)

koogs, Thursday, 10 August 2023 13:59 (eight months ago) link

so all their 2022 shows except Primavera ( https://www.setlist.fm/search?query=autechre+2022 <- doesn't have Milan listed at the moment)

StanM, Thursday, 10 August 2023 14:14 (eight months ago) link

(can someone let me know how big the files are please?)

koogs, Thursday, 10 August 2023 14:29 (eight months ago) link

I paid for the wavs but have only downloaded the mp3s, they're 140-190mb each.

crutch of england (ledge), Thursday, 10 August 2023 14:34 (eight months ago) link

flacs are 330-460 mb. don't think you can download individually actually so 700mb for all mp3s, 2.7gb for flacs.

crutch of england (ledge), Thursday, 10 August 2023 14:37 (eight months ago) link

doesn't releasing these things usually signal they're gonna drop new material soon

frogbs, Thursday, 10 August 2023 21:16 (eight months ago) link

I sure hope so

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 10 August 2023 21:19 (eight months ago) link

My order for the 2022 sets arrived with a link to download the 2016/8 sets, which I have previously bought. I don't think I could have put that in my cart by accident because I didn't visit the release page for that set. Hoping they will sort it out for me.

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 11 August 2023 07:36 (eight months ago) link

Starting with Milan (eventually I will buy the set but for now just luxuriating in a stream)

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 11 August 2023 13:54 (eight months ago) link

London B is amazing, I find it hard not to just listen to it on repeat for hours.

toby, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 05:48 (eight months ago) link

got a ticket for the Sydney show on late release, row 3 so in the pitch dark I will be able to hear them move sliders and clear their throats

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 07:52 (eight months ago) link

I need some time alone in a dark room to fully appreciate these.

crutch of england (ledge), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 09:29 (eight months ago) link

couldn't get into it myself, but i don't think techno is really for me

Hospital Radio, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 10:33 (eight months ago) link

I don't know why but I cannot get myself excited about live Ae recordings... Maybe I should change that

Same, and I love Ae more than life itself

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 11:31 (eight months ago) link

maybe try the Athens one, they seemed to shake off the abstract urge a little there.

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 11:58 (eight months ago) link

Same, I've never checked out an AE live recording.

Thought this was an interesting comment:

Also, I've noticed less interaction between elements in these sets. I can hear separate machines/layers running more or less independently of each other.

I feel like their older material had more cross-modulation and interaction between sounds. (Which I prefer.)

I love Ae, but I think they broke my brain with the NTS Sessions. That was like my capacity point; anything else that gets poured into the full bucket just spills right back out again.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 14:03 (eight months ago) link

Yeah, I haven't really been able to get excited about being tasked to find the August 27, 1972 Veneta, Oregon "Dark Star" in 42 different versions of "c16 deep tread"
