Nixon has often been described as amoral, but I agree, he was not an obvious sociopath in the way Trump so clearly is.

nixon was an angry, bitter person who hated himself.

reagan was the poster child of toxic positivity, that particularly american brand of cruelty rooted in wilful ignorance.

trump is a gangster and an animal.

The verdict sheet in Carroll v. Trump is four pages long.

This first page illustrates the various theories under which a jury can find the former president liable of battery under New York's Adult Survivors Act.

Joe Tacopina got a lot of adulatory press when Trump signed him as his lead defense lawyer. This jury shat all over him. Good on them!

It's hard to put up a good defense when you really have none, and your client basically shrugs the whole thing off.

Like Trump himself, Tacopina has been well known to East Coast natives for decades. As I said upthread, if Tacopina's your lawyer, you might get off (he got Meek Mill released), but everybody will know that you did that shit, and probably more.

going after Trump would mean ignoring the anti-reality shield the GOP has so meticulously built up these past few years and siding with....fact checkers and the media

frogbs, Tuesday, 9 May 2023 20:09 (eleven months ago) link

Every single opportunity these GOP dummies have had to sever ties with Trump, or sideline Trump, they have instead turned up the volume of their support. At this point I suspect, go figure, they just kind of like him in all his criminal, corrupt glory.

I dunno, the party has become so stupidly, blindly ugly and contrarian that it would not shock me if they pushed to decriminalize sexual assault. And justified it as somehow protecting children.

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Tuesday, 9 May 2023 20:15 (eleven months ago) link

I don't know what this changes or affects in the long term, but fuck yes this is good. Good for E. Jean Carroll for standing up to him, she never had to say a word about this and risked a fair amount by doing it. She deserves every penny.

Also, in re the long term, there's no way it doesn't hurt him. Whether other Republicans use it against him or not, Democrats and progressive outside groups definitely will. I imagine there'll be an anti-Trump spot just featuring her.
