That’s the Mariners, remember when they went 18 scoreless innings in the game against the Astros last year? And then other games it’s like a whole different team. Cal Raleigh struck out four times today; yesterday he went 2 for 4 and drove in both runs including a homer. They are just Like That.

The @Mariners had some big hits last night.

Am concerned about Julio’s slump but hopefully he will pull out of it, he’s been looking a bit better recently.

JRod had a similar ice cold start in 2022:

Through 5-18-22 he had a .240/.303/.322 slash (84 wRC+)

So far in 2023 he is .204/.271/.387 (86 wRC+)

Not unheard of for DR players playing in northern climates to take time to get hot.

Reah I know he started slow last year as well. He’s so young, it’s not anything serious but he’s such an icon it’s difficult to see him struggle. He actually started the first ten or so games pretty well with several multiple hit games but trailed off after that. Just seems that they never have just one player slumping so it’s more noticeable than it would otherwise be.

Everybody's gonna get what they got coming (gyac), Wednesday, 10 May 2023 20:01 (eleven months ago) link

Actually just looked at today’s lineup and saw they moved him from leadoff as well. Hopefully that helps.

Servais has been thinking about dropping Julio down in the lineup for a couple days talked to him about it after last night's game. Wants to give him a break, allow Julio see some AB's before stepping to the plate. Does want to see him back in the leadoff spot.

JP’s my fave. 🫡

https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/its-all-coming-together-mariners-j-p-crawford-emerging-as-a-legitimate-two-way-threat/

“First, last, sixth, seventh — it doesn’t matter. As long as I’m in the lineup every day, I’m going to try to get on base and let the guys hit me in,” he said.

He leads the team in on-base percentage (.382) and he’s posting a career high in walk rate at 18.2%, up from 11.3% in 2022.

He’s had some clutch hits this year and he’s a great ss, hoping the rest of his season plays out as well.

CAL RALEIGH I LOVE YOU

MONSTROUS DUMPER pic.twitter.com/gNzJebUes9

— Seattle Mariners (@Mariners) May 16, 2023

From mlb.com

Yet, Big Dumper did something on Monday night that Varitek never accomplished, despite being one of the best switch-hitters in the rich history of the Red Sox. Raleigh became the first catcher to homer from both sides of the plate in Fenway Park’s 112 years of existence while lifting the Mariners to a 10-1 win.

Literally hit it out of the park as well.

Oh and also:
“He obviously had the ‘C’ on his chest, he was the captain,” Raleigh said of Varitek. “I feel like you don't see a lot of guys like that, who get that respect and kind of earn all that. That's just the kind of player you want to be. I don't really care about the home runs and stats. I want to be a good teammate, a good leader, and a good guy that people can lean on.”

He’s such a leader on this team. The best!

Piece on George Kirby and his incredible K/BB ratio:

https://www.billjamesonline.com/george_kirbys_adventures_in_ratio_land/

clemenza, Tuesday, 16 May 2023 13:27 (eleven months ago) link

There’s not really a huge amount of info on Kirby cos this is his first full season, but he’s such a special pitcher to watch. I disagree that his offspeed pitches aren’t special. He has four that he uses with a wide range of movement and with his command it throws hitters off. What he did to the Red Sox lineup, which I think is third in hitting this season so far, was just insanely poised for someone in his first full season.

George Kirby, Disgusting 83mph Curveball. 🤮 pic.twitter.com/Yr0G3eVxQU

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) May 16, 2023

All his offspeed stuff is incredible and he gets through innings without throwing a ton of pitches because of it. He made Alex Verdugo, the Red Sox best hitter this season so far, look helpless with that…slurve? Especially as Verdugo has been improving the % of offspeed pitches he hits this season.

There was some Fangraphs piece that touched on that he is essentially following a high risk high reward approach; he is dependent on command for his success and good hitters can and will punish any slips for him in the zone. I would have liked to see him against the Red Sox lineup that blew through the Blue Jays a couple of weeks ago because the whole lineup was pretty effective in what they do well, sitting in and forcing the pitch count up and I would really love to have seen them try Kirby then.

Also the success of Mariners pitching should owe some credit to their superb catching staff. When they’re executing as planned, they really are the best in the whole game.

Ty France possibly injured no 😩

Initial X-rays on Ty France’s left wrist came back negative, but Scott Servais said there is a contusion and a lot of swelling in the area, putting doubt on the first baseman being in tomorrow’s lineup. As for a possible IL stint, the Mariners will assess it day to day.

Mariners learning to score again? Things you love to see.

Scott Servais on George Kirby's demeanor in the dugout tonight:

"Oh, he was about ready to rip somebody's head off."

— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) June 1, 2023

George Kirby was basically ready to kill everyone after he pitched a gem against the a Yankees at the beginning of the month and they Felixed him by waiting till he pitched 8 flawless innings to score, and then his next start was uncharacteristically awful, so naturally they were too scared to try him this time out.

Anyway I think this series win is good for them, hope they can keep it up and keep scoring, cos they’ve done so many pitchers dirty and they’ve clearly been working on their hitting (reducing K rates, trying to walk more) but there’s tons to do. The fact they got 9 runs despite 1-4 in the lineup not getting a single hit between them is insane.

And Ford is doing a decent job (in a minuscule sample size though) since they called him up, it’s so nice having a DH who isn’t four automatic outs!

TY FRANCE HATES TEXAS CONFIRMED (gyac), Wednesday, 14 June 2023 09:53 (ten months ago) link

I hiro mention!

Earlier today I watched Raleigh take BP and hit a long, deep drive just over the “76” sign into the ‘pen, only to be robbed of his batting practice home run by a perfectly-timed leap from the 49-year-old Ichiro Suzuki. Cal, who was mired in a tough stretch over the road trip, threw up his hands in exasperation at another well-hit ball finding a glove. He then proceeded to hit one into the second deck of the Hit It Here Café a few pitches later, so I think we can credit the Ichiro Effect on that homer from Cal. Seriously, though, Cal said postgame what has been bogging him down is thinking too much, effectively outsmarting himself as he tries to think like a catcher and a hitter at the same time.

“I think I started worrying too much about what the pitcher was doing and not enough about what works for me,” said Cal of his tough stretch. “My job is to go out there and be ready to hit every single time. Be ready for the fastball and just adjust to the off-speed.”

“Sometimes it’s the dumb hitters that are really good in this game, just because they’re always on the fastball. They’re always keeping it simple, which is a good thing.”

Does such extreme repentance offer salvation from clownhood? Does a tear-soaked utterance of the phrase, "I just ... feel terrible (sniffle) ... especially for the guys," spare one from derision in a case such as this? Can our hearts truly remain hardened in the presence of a man who both knows he's done wrong and cares for the guys?

In this case, I am willing to take the rare step of sparing Kelenic from designation as a clown. The deciding factor here is that he was originally drafted by the Mets, which means he was doomed to suffer some kind of humiliating malady at some point, and therefore none of this is really his fault.

Seawald trade means they can use Muñoz as the closer and he’s been doing so well. Mariners probably the only team with what every team wants, healthy starting pitching in abundance. Robbie Ray gets injured? Call up Bryce Miller from AA. Marco Gonzalez gets injured? Call up Bryan Woo from AA. They are winding the younger guys down a bit, but they’re in a good place with the wild card rn.

Julio was slumping so badly earlier in the year, he’s been absolutely must see. He still chases too much and needs to work on his k rate, but when he’s on it seems like he can hit just about anything.

I really like watching him in the field btw, he makes a lot of highlight reel type plays but his bread and butter are his savvy reads and his speed. Naturally Ichiro has a lot of praise for him.

It’s probably between him and Robert (CWS) for the Gold Glove, Julio has a chance to pick up a silver slugger as well if he has a strong September and assuming the Mariners don’t shit the bed somehow and miss the playoffs, he should also pick up a few MVP votes (obviously not that he’ll win it, but as recognition of how he’s carried this team).
