ugh her blog writing has such an irritating tone

electricsound, Friday, 22 August 2008 04:33 (fifteen years ago) link

i was fucking disappointed. were you not?

Surmounter, Friday, 22 August 2008 04:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Think I preferred "This Lonely Love" when it was called "It Should Have Been You".

geez, wow. I thought the link was mixed up, but, nope.

I'll probably buy her book, but her writing on her site is pretty something. Not surprising, maybe, and nicely... expansive.

I actually think 'Exile' is one of her best, although I completely understand the dismay at the (over)production. I still listen to it quite often - 'Tourist', 'Sunshine' and 'Jamie' are faves - and have listened to it many more times than 'Made In China'...

Investment bankers are falling from the sky! (SeekAltRoute), Thursday, 18 September 2008 02:47 (fifteen years ago) link

it terrified me. overproduction can be a gift, but this was paired with something i wasn't familiar with, with regard to her -- sub-par songwriting? but i do need to give it another chance

She's the new Ray Davies!

This is the homeless lady who will magically make your mother understand you if you give her your new pair of Doc Martens, right?

Steve (Not Stevie) (Stevie D), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 15:10 (fifteen years ago) link

why does she always look so cross?

I went and saw her read from the book. Did anyone else?

Also only just heard about her and Ryan Adams being 'kindred souls'.

I just started following Juliana on twitter today, and I'm already sort of wishing I didn't. She seems to get on just before midnight and rambles for an hour like a 16-yo girl about this and that (tonight it's American Idol). Image shattered.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 21 May 2009 04:35 (fourteen years ago) link

she did this about lindsay lohan very recently (and then wrote a song about her)

I just finished her Memoir book.

And it was alright.

It's what you'd expect, probably, but none the less entertaining and enlightening, and so on...

New album - Peace & Love

Australia, the world's suburb (SeekAltRoute), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 00:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Not bad on the first couple of listens - lots of acoustic guitar, so certainly peaceful. Not sure that I love it yet though...

I had no idea until a few days ago she was even recording, never mind releasing, an album with Nada Surf's Matthew Caws. The fifteen-year-old in me is feeling a lot of feelings on first impressions.

boxedjoy, Monday, 25 November 2013 21:48 (ten years ago) link

I forgot how totally cool she was and then I reminded myself by listening to her cover of "Raisans" today -- but I can't remember whether it was her or someone who sounded like her who sang a cover of Yeh Yeh.

sweat pea (La Lechera), Monday, 25 November 2013 21:51 (ten years ago) link

her cover of "Yeh, Yeh" appears on the Fathers & Sons OST, but I've never heard it before.

when skrillex just stood there (unregistered), Monday, 25 November 2013 22:02 (ten years ago) link

huh
i have definitely heard it before. maybe i taped it from the library or something? i can see that happening in 10th or 11th gr.

I was way into her in the '90s. I'm surprised to discover that I might be even more into her '90s material now than I was back in the day. Only Everything was particularly slept on by me. What an album.

I never went any further than Bed but I think I wanna make the push and catch up on her complete works. Setting myself up for disappointment? Possibly.

Beautiful Creature is excellent and I recall Total System Failure being very good. I've dipped in and out over the years and I don't think she has done much that isn't pretty enjoyable.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Monday, 23 November 2015 20:02 (eight years ago) link

So, she lives around the corner from me and last week our dogs made friends and I was standing there like, "hey, nice dog" meanwhile I know the dog's name is Charlie and I've seen her twice. I wasn't going to be obnoxious and say anything but man was that a weird few minutes.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 23 November 2015 20:39 (eight years ago) link

Wow. I've generally been decidedly un-starstruck meeting/running into celebrities but I honestly don't know how I'd react in that situation. There would be some gushing, I'm sure.

Say Goodbye To That Blood (Old Lunch), Monday, 23 November 2015 20:47 (eight years ago) link

yeah I don't think a few friendly words would be obnoxious at all

How to Walk Away is my favorite of her 21st century solo albums, and the the short-lived band she had with Freda and Heidi Gluck called Some Girls is her best full band project.

X-post yeah you might be right. I see her pretty often so if the dogs meet again maybe I will say something nice. :)

yes, one of my favorites this year, not familiar with anything else she's done (hardly any of the Newton-John songs either) but loving the melodies, the energy/spirit of it

Always liked her, but just now wallowing in nostalgia and connecting with my inner '90s indie rocker by listening to the Blake Babies' Sunburn and then Hey Babe, Become What You Are, and Only Everything. What a great run that is. If she had come up in the '60s she would've been a famous Brill Building hitmaker.

Josefa, Wednesday, 6 April 2022 23:19 (two years ago) link

still love her so much

1988-1990 was such an interesting period, when the American Underground of the mid-'80s had made its impact and grunge was bubbling up, and everyone was influenced by similar things but taking those influences off in different directions.
