2020 was closer in the sense that Trump would have only needed to flip around 40,000 votes in 3 states to win. Hilary would have needed to flip around 70,000 votes in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.

symsymsym, Saturday, 8 April 2023 01:48 (one year ago) link

yes, it was closer. regardless of the fact that Biden got millions more votes than Trump, those few thousand votes in three swing states were what mattered

Dan S, Saturday, 8 April 2023 02:07 (one year ago) link

it's a really great system

its weird how for years theres been a realistic movement to do away with the electoral college thats already part way to making it happen and you never hear a national dem mention it despite losing the presidency twice recently when winning the national vote, almost like they dont care about winning

lag∞n, Saturday, 8 April 2023 02:14 (one year ago) link

its exactly the kind of issue they freak out about repealing because they think going against some weird shit everyone learned in 5th grade would turn everyone off

Imagine the alternate reality where Bush won the popular vote and lost the EC:

Clarence Thomas deserves a full Senate investigation and possible impeachment, but Congress likely doesn't have the appetite for that.

As one Democratic House member tells me via text, "Public trust in SC is already bad. A big circus would destroy it completely."

Tell me again exactly how this SCOTUS has earned the public's trust?

Bucee's is a meme in Texas but I absolutely DNGI - it's a gas station, an XXXXL QuikTrip.

My 12 year old and his friends have made kind of a meme about it--I think it's the name + the logo.

sorry to derail the donald trump sucks thread, but i just want 2 add that bucee's is one of the worst-designed places ive ever been to, yes there are dozens of toilets but there are still lines out the door because every yutz who lives along I35 wants to take in the experience of mass pissing apparently, the food is overrated garbage, there is virtually no traffic regulation regime, just every car for itself. its like the founders of this business said "what if the small town gas station was also the source of one of the most intense feelings of anxiety, drivers these days are too calm"

There are no chain convenience stores near me — at least, none that I've seen. There's a gas station with a convenience store attached about a block away — the only store within walking distance — which my wife and I have begun referring to as "the bodega."

Buc-ee's is much newer than that. I've had fairly positive experiences there, spacious clean bathrooms and no lines, but it's been several years since I've been to one, so I'm sure it's gone downhill. Might also depend on the specific location. I also know for a fact that the unusual candy selection, which was a big draw for me, has been greatly reduced in recent years.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Saturday, 8 April 2023 23:38 (one year ago) link

I only know about bucees because of a tweet the other week from someone in the UK aghast that the salary for a manager at a car wash was 3x the average professional salary for someone in the UK (it was like 105k/yr) and lots of people had to tell him this wasn't just some little gas station carwash, and also yes UK salaries fucking suck

A new ABC/Ipsos poll pegs Trump's favorable rating at just 25%.

This has been a bad poll for Trump, but I'm not sure we've seen a number that low in any poll since early in/before the 2016 campaign. pic.twitter.com/lSKbd4wxgv

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 14:54 (one year ago) link

Meantime...

Spotted going through security at the DC federal courthouse: Stephen Miller. Miller was part of a recent order rebuffing Trump's challenge to Jan. 6 grand jury testimony from former senior aides on executive privilege grounds https://t.co/pMQF9u8nIQ

— Zoe Tillman (@ZoeTillman) April 11, 2023

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 16:36 (one year ago) link

Trump's final Hail Mary to prevent testimony from others on his end is the appeal about Pence's testimony on an executive privilege basis; Pence and his team have said they got what they wanted in the earlier ruling from the legislative ending so that's all that's left. Given all previous appeals have failed -- which is why Miller's there today -- I'm guessing that's about that. (Of course, Miller et al can just take the Fifth, but that's the point -- it's their core and deserved right on the one hand, but they will have formally answered in a court context on the other as opposed to avoiding testimony entirely.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 16:40 (one year ago) link

biggest q: why _didnt_ trump pardon himself? the rules of if ur not cheatin u aint tryin demand it. what a cuck.
