I would still kinda bop around if I heard "Get Lucky" and have residual affection, but I am almost completely oblivious to mainstream radio and rarely encounter it in the wild so it's not too overplayed for me

not as into Hey Ya (prob cuz of the weird rhythm stuff, thx as always to the ilx musos for explaining)

How is all this "i don't care for their big pop breakout, i'm more into their seminal work" a controversial music opinion?

enochroot, Friday, 7 April 2023 20:18 (one year ago) link

I just have to bash RAM whenever I get a chance

brimstead, Friday, 7 April 2023 20:27 (one year ago) link

RAM on

I started getting into “Get Lucky” after seeing Chic do it multiple times. Pharrell’s vocals can go get fucked tho

Chic must be so awesome live

“Get Lucky” is horrible, infinitely worse than “Hey Ya”

the only Daft Punk album I ever wanna listen to anymore is Alive 2007. it astounds me that a group so tapped into the soul of the dance floor and the idea of electronic music as a living organism put out something so tepid and strung out. I mean RAM is definitely a good album but I'm worn out just thinking about putting it on again

frogbs, Friday, 7 April 2023 21:48 (one year ago) link

yeah, Alive 2007 is the best Daft Punk album. I don't know if that's a controversial opinion, it certainly seems obvious to me. They just took all the best bits of their albums and mashed them together perfectly.

silverfish, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 16:00 (one year ago) link

daft punk got lucky a few times by riding different waves of disco gentrification but their music is just not very interesting on the whole

Left, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 16:38 (one year ago) link

it feels like dance music for straight people to me

Left, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 16:39 (one year ago) link

someone will point out how popular [insert alleged daft punk banger here] was in gay clubs and I'll be like sure but that's part of the problem

Left, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 16:41 (one year ago) link

is that something inherent to their music or a byproduct of their mass popularity?

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 11 April 2023 17:55 (one year ago) link

Alive 2007 is also the only Daft Punk album I listen to, but I really only need 20-30 minutes of it. There's a LOT going on and I just want to move on to something else after a point.

i agree with this tbh— i like Daft Punk okay but it’s definitely closer to the straight bro EDM quotient than the gay disco bathhouse quotient in my mind.

daft punk never made a great album

(but alive 2007 comes close, the discovery singles are undeniable, etc.)

ufo, Wednesday, 12 April 2023 13:00 (one year ago) link

Agree on both of those posts though I would say homework really is one I'll always have a soft spot for, it still sounds pretty fresh.

hmm, gay feelings very much in the mix of my Daft Punk love

ah yes... at a time when every singer had that sa,e numetal Eddie Vedder sound (eg, #1 hit of 2001: Lifehouse "Hanging On A Moment"), I always felt that Romanthony's vox were especially gentrifying and straight.

Elvis's version of Blue Suede Shoes is (slightly) better than Carl Perkins' original.

Pavement were dated and unlistenable in their heyday, basically Weezer for people who refuse to admit they like Weezer

that whole indie way of "singing" as if you don't care about the song and are above it all is such bullshit and I don't know why people put up with it for so long

your original display name is still visible (Left), Wednesday, 12 April 2023 18:19 (one year ago) link

I assume the trend towards overbearing earnestness in 00s indie was partly a reaction against this

Alive 2007's poor showing in the Daft Punk poll remains a mystery to me.

Indexed, Wednesday, 12 April 2023 18:34 (one year ago) link

I get why people hate Pavement, but comparing them to Weezer feels completely bizarre to me. Beyond, yes, they are both made up of college educated white dudes playing guitar-based indie rock.

whew! Fortunately this doesn't describe Pavement. Malkmus was a romantic, whatever else he was.

I never really bought into this interpretation of the vocal delivery as applied to Pavement. I hear it more in modern "indie" examples where it sounds like they're trying to sing without moving any facial muscles.

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Wednesday, 12 April 2023 18:37 (one year ago) link

college educated white dudes

Cuomo not until later! (college-educated, that is)

morrisp.fandom.com (morrisp), Wednesday, 12 April 2023 18:46 (one year ago) link

I don't really buy that that particular way of singing was really that widespread, so much 90s indie was really emotive

omar little, Wednesday, 12 April 2023 18:48 (one year ago) link

And even some of it was low-key or not exuberant, much of that style was very much engaged with the emotions of the songs

lol u know ilu but this is the rongest take. musically there's hardly any points of comparison between these two except the instrumentation.

the description left gives mostly makes me think of Serge Gainsbourg, the cult of whom looks very bad indeed in 2023 but I can't say I don't enjoy it when he does that

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 12 April 2023 18:52 (one year ago) link

him too. another poorly aged musician with an obnoxious cult following who does this is frank sinatra

maybe mr pavement has more nuance and feeling in his delivery than I remember I just had him in mind as representative of a certain tendency although he's far from the worst offender

your original display name is still visible (Left), Wednesday, 12 April 2023 19:06 (one year ago) link

makes me think of Cake but I think intoning your songs in a way that literally anyone could sing them is cool in its own way

frogbs, Wednesday, 12 April 2023 19:10 (one year ago) link

I trace a lot of that style back to Cat Power, personally.
