It can be healthy because it allows one to cook with less salt. It's also in a lot of stuff unheralded, so could be interesting to look at context under which your brain chemistry is fucked with or not.

Salt is not bad for most people either. :)

Although I use kosher salt like a fiend, so I've been taking iodide supplements since I'm not getting it from my salt.

I like sun-dried tomatoes! I just used them in my last dinner.

I did just sprinkle some chicken makhani with knorr caldo de tomate to finish instead of adding more salt. But that stuff also has sugar, etc, so probably no net health benefit. Lowering salt just helps with high blood pressure? Certainly not suggesting it is bad for most and searching for anything to defend my knorr jars.

xp Sufjan -- yeah, it probably is the other stuff in the MSG additive foods, which are mostly snack foods so ... thanks thread! I learned things!

One knock against artificial sweetners in diet soda is it can cause cravings for real sugar later. I do wonder if MSG doesn't do something higher order but harmful like that in a snack food context.

umami makes one feel satisfied or full, so I could see a real effect on a body experiencing that feeling from these enhanced but not substantial snack foods.

Dad joke: how do communion wafers taste?

Saviory.

I like so-called bland trad vegetable soups like French Onion and Leek and Potato made using boring unreconstructed recipes, that probably is uncool.

This is something that I've read about the 0-calorie fake sugars too (stevia et al). Not only does eating sweet things make you want to eat more sweet things, I've heard that the brain registers the sweetness but not the attendant caloric boost and so it gets hijacked into eating more. I'm definitely not food scientist though!

I've always been against drinking my calories, and was anti-smoothie until recently. Maybe this is uncool? I like to chew.

But lately I've been having smoothies for half my meals for health reasons, and it's a weird feeling to consume this thing that I know is very calorie-dense but goes down so quickly and uh smoothly, and not feeling very satisfied mentally/emotionally but then feeling quite full in a bit.

This one has grossed a few of friends out over the years: Heinz Ketchup is a great- maybe the best- thing to dip egg rolls in. Especially SysCo egg rolls, like what Jack in the Box makes. Which taste good.

++ on the sundried tomatoes. Sure they are a very 90s thing along with risotto and paninis but I still like using them diced up and tossed thru pasta with tuna and caramelised onion as a mega simple dinner.
