Are you talking about the little flat plastic thing with a slot in it?

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 26 March 2023 15:39 (one year ago) link

I can work those (sort of). This is like a bit of sellotape wrapped around the neck of plastic - usually around own brand bread (Sainsbury's, this time - we were spoiling ourselves).

This must be incomprehensible to anyone outside the UK, sorry!

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Sunday, 26 March 2023 17:25 (one year ago) link

Oh I know what you mean. I can't figure that one either

Oh god.. I hate those. I guess it's supposed to be possible to peel the fused together ends apart and release the cinched up neck of the sack (and then.. reseal it when you're done?) but I doubt it has ever been done

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 26 March 2023 17:29 (one year ago) link

My advice on this is to cut the tie up the middle with a small scissors or knife, meaning you can twist the bag closed again after taking bread out.

limb tins & cum (gyac), Sunday, 26 March 2023 17:37 (one year ago) link

I can usually part those as the manufacturer intended but closing the bread up again? Nope.

steely flan (suzy), Sunday, 26 March 2023 17:49 (one year ago) link

Also we may have the origin story of Tracer making own bread here!

I have tried with scissors, but they would need to be elfin to get under the sellotape!

I am heartened that it's not just me. And if I see Paxton in the street, I'll clip him, quite frankly.

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Sunday, 26 March 2023 17:55 (one year ago) link

Scissors or tip of a sharp knife is pretty much the only way to deal with that tape-closure that has a prayer of working. I advise you to stick to that method and just accept your defeats along with the occasional victory. It's better than rage-rending the bag. You can always save that approach for the emotional satisfaction of the attack and destruction of the foe.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 26 March 2023 18:17 (one year ago) link

the bread i buy (50/50) has the sellotape but the two ends of the sellotape has paper on them to stop it sticking to itself. pull the ends apart, ripping the paper, keep pulling to open the bag.

it's not 100% but works most times

koogs, Sunday, 26 March 2023 18:35 (one year ago) link

i just pull apart the tape and can usually reseal it. i like to have the best-before date kept on it as we have various loaves/ bread products out, and they're usually seedy ones, so hard to spot mould :-l

kinder, Sunday, 26 March 2023 19:12 (one year ago) link

this is usually branded bread though. those really narrow hardcore tape closures - no chance

kinder, Sunday, 26 March 2023 19:14 (one year ago) link

I went to the hardware store yesterday and purchased a box cutter/utility knife, and now I realize I will need a pair of scissors — which I don't have — to cut the knife out of its plastic packaging.

but also fuck you (unperson), Sunday, 26 March 2023 19:39 (one year ago) link

I cut the tape like gyac mentioned, then use a previously saved Paxton clip to reseal the bag.

that tape makes me swear loudly every time, i fucking hate it
excellent addition to this thread

the use of "boomer" in the colloquial sense. i don't _mind_ being called a boomer, i'm not a prescriptivist, but i had this conversation today:

"yeah my mom's a boomer"
"really? you look about 20"
"i'm 22"

A LITTLE CLARITY WOULD BE NICE.

Electricity and Gas bills. always annoying that they are both due on the exact same day rather than being different salary months but...

Electricity: £92.10 in credit, because of all the recent government payments
Gas: £92.03 in debit...

can i put the credit towards the debit? no. the two accounts are unconnected despite the name and address for each being identical, and the same card being used to pay both bills.

seriously though, "actually i'm not a boomer" is the most boomer response ever. the gen x response is to shrug, mutter "whatever" under my breath, and move on with my life.

Born in 2000 or 2001, so the mother would have only needed to have been 36 or 37 at the time of the birth to qualify as a boomer. This doesn't seem unlikely?

always super annoyed when a writer’s bio says “published/bylines in” and then proceeds to list literally every publication that’s published them. bylines in nyt, vogue, pitchfork, teen vogue, cool blog, defunct mag

irrational! i’m a writer too! i just think it should be narrowed down to five or so “, among others,” instead of like, thirty

*something mildly annoying happens to someone*

"OH GODDAMMIT, I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN, IT'S A FULL MOON TONIGHT"

Guilty. Also big on "why does this have to happen to me?" and "Of course! Today!"

I think I got it from my father. I'll try to stop.

annoyed by the rounding of two of the corners of these books. what books have every looked like this outside those moleskin notebooks?

koogs, Saturday, 8 April 2023 20:32 (one year ago) link

I think it may be a bit more widespread design choice. Think I noticed it on a recentish book I picked up last year. Can't think which one right now.
Think I prefer straight corners though.

annoyed at Calexpo, where they hold state fairs, rv shows & bridal expos & whatnot

Huge permanent electronic signs at both major entrances now mostly used for local advertising

but that *should* theoretically (surely) at least promote a current major event when it’s happening right?

but no

a couple of poorly placed tiny plastic sandwich boards by the roadside are your only notice of the day’s event

meanwhile the giant electronic signs continue to tell you about vape stores & bad mexican food 2 miles away

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 9 April 2023 19:08 (one year ago) link

not irrationally "angry" but any time I see a tv show where someone opens the door for someone, and that person enters the house, and they laeve the door wide the fuck open, I cant' focus on the scene cos i'm so bugged about the door being left wide open

Perfectly able-bodied people who, instead of simply using the handle to pull or push a door open, push the handicapped button to make the door open agonizingly slowly.

xpost - as a corollary to that one Neando, it always takes me out when a show or movie is set somewhere and during some time of year when the outdoors is absolutely bug-drenched but the characters seemingly live 24-7 with huge open patio doors and windows with no screens

absolutely no sane person in the Midwest would leave that many windows and doors wide open without screens in June, no matter how pleasing the temperature!

My local pharmacist has a door which will only open from the inside by pressing this button, which is a whole six feet away from the door. They don't have a decent sized sign to tell you this is the case either. Every fucking time I forget and try to pull it open.

But who are we doing it versus? (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 April 2023 16:34 (one year ago) link

I know there's a dedicated thread about the whole thing, but I really hate this time of year when I see a tweet or something announcing a cool looking new release, only to click on it to find out it's another damn RSD exclusive thing that will be pressed in vanishingly tiny quantities and will only be found three months from now on Discogs for 3x the already inflated retail price.

(this post inspired by seeing news that the new Albert Ayler archival live thing from 1966 is a Record Store Day exclusive)
