he doesn't know the difference between an arrest and an indictment, or an arrest and coming in for arraignment
Josh otm. His red-hat brigade knows even less about how the world works. Hence, a PR coup for the Donald no matter what happens. Or doesn't happen.

Yeah, prosecution might get him back on the front pages, but it doesn't earn him any new support. Just makes fans of his extralegal shenanigans that much more frenzied.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 21 March 2023 19:01 (one year ago) link
I don't think it helps him either but it's true that Trump has a spell over such a wide swath of the Republican base which makes it real difficult for any consequences to happen. Like, the man could very well be elected president again next year. But if DeSantis actually manages to convert the Trump people and becomes the nominee I think what lagoon said is probably otm, once he's completely out of power nobody's gonna be loyal to him

unless it's a clown car field, you have to get *some* votes from chamber of commerce types to win a GOP nomination. 0 votes from them is not enough. and you need them to turn out to win a national election. him being charged with a felony is not good news for him, be serious.

I mean, it was an idle thought, and I'm not imagining it would have a concrete effect on voters, I was considering it more as helping build a general cynicism that saps any pressure for an indictment/prosecution to happen, and in a wider sense rather than just on ILX. It is dumb, I guess.

I don't want to feed into this BS much further, but this was pretty amusing:
Trump’s increasing insistence that he wants to be handcuffed behind his back for a perp walk appears to come from various motivations, including that he wants to project defiance in the face of what he sees as an unfair prosecution and that it would galvanize his base for his 2024 presidential campaign. But above all, people close to Trump said, he was deeply anxious that any special arrangements – like making his first court appearance by video link or skulking into the courthouse – would make him look weak or like a loser....Trump ... has told various allies over the weekend that he didn’t care if someone shot him – he would become “a martyr”. He later added that if he got shot, he would probably win the presidency in 2024, the sources said.

pre-emptively removing bookmark, but there can be a ton of reasons for this that have nothing to do w/ having 'cold feet', as the article insinuates, and the prosecutors legally can't tell you why the delay, but I'm sure the internet is going to clusterfuck over the fact that Bragg didn't meet Trump's self-professed indictment deadline

wonder if this is why, this thread implies something pretty major was discovered in the classified docs thing recently
BREAKING: Potential earthquake coming in Mar-a-Lago documents case. DC Circuit sets unprecedented schedule requiring Trump counsel to submit filing by midnight TONIGHT and then DOJ to reply by 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.Did the court see evidence of national security threats?— Tristan Snell (@TristanSnell) March 22, 2023
― frogbs, Wednesday, 22 March 2023 20:05 (one year ago) link
The fact that the DC Circuit ordered Trump's lawyer to testify to a grand jury about the classified documents case is in itself pretty compelling evidence that something very serious was discovered. Compelling a lawyer to breach client confidentiality is extremely rare. Whatever the outcome of this, I'm thinking most of the court's records will be sealed. We plebians won't get to see the inside scoop.

Can we plz have no more "major bombshell coming soon" stuff?
I will believe that something is happening when it happens. We've had, like, eight years of these "major thing ABOUT TO HAPPEN" telegraphs and the only things that ever happen are mostly shit.
Otherwise it's just an eternal krakenboner
― carne asana (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 20:54 (one year ago) link
Not relitigating the "doom" posting from yesterday, just to say that part of the problem with following this stuff is that it gets exhausting wading through every single "bombshell!", "huge news" tweet from 4,650 armchair lawyers with a blue checkmark every day. I think the fatigue of seeing these type of proclamations, dozens of times a day in some cases, has turned people pretty cynical about even the most legit newsworthy breaks.

Not sure if you were responding to me or YMP, but it's not that specific bombshell, but that we've been told about 15-20 alleged bombshells since last Friday, which makes it hard to acknowledge what might be legit new developments worth watching.
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 21:00 (one year ago) link
It was to Tracer
Like the original tweet posted was from last night saying "omg the District Court ordered Trump's lawyer to testify by midnight, something must have prompted them to act fast", I then posted a tweet showing that it likely meant Corcoran had tapes and transcriptions that he had to hand over, and the news just confirmed that is exactly what happened. The district court used the words "criminal scheme" to describe what Trump did and ordered him to testify against Trump and turn over all of those recordings. they believe Trump committed a crime and his attorney knowingly aided him
This isn't speculation. It happened.

― BrianB, Wednesday, 22 March 2023 21:14 (one year ago) link
Trump can still appeal the DC Circuit ruling to the SCOTUS. Knowing him, he will try. Whatever evidence of a "criminal scheme" the original judge saw before her ruling, it was developed independently of the materials and testimony being demanded by the court order. One suspects that independent evidence is fairly strong to warrant these rulings.

years ago there weren't multiple active cases in criminal court against him, there was a Special Investigation that many of us (me included) put too much faith in, and impeachment proceedings that we knew wouldn't progress to conviction in the Senate, and a whole bunch of unsourced rumors.
this is tangible information about the proceedings of an actual criminal case where his own lawyer has been ordered to testify against him - something about 5 million degrees more severity than he faced while in office or since, up until this point. you may not find that important or interesting, many of us do.
as Aimless points out, he can and probably will appeal to SCOTUS, but this SCOTUS has proven they care more about issues than protecting specific individuals who aren't even in office any more, esp given their lack of desire to even hear his lawsuits regarding 'election fraud', and their refusal to overturn a lower court and block the release of his tax returns. they could rule the court overstepped. they might not. but what happened is quite literally a big deal.
