Apparently (and not surprisingly) there is online chatter in the places one might expect threatening to show up to Mar a Lago armed and ready to defend Trump from extradition (just as there are predictable rumors that Trump is not in fact planning to surrender to authorities if demanded). Would bring up some interesting conflicts: the collision of 2nd amendment stuff, DeSantis more or less curtailing certain forms of protest, stand your ground laws, Secret Service and ex-presidents, state law enforcement vs federal, the torn allegiances of cops between their own local power and broadly fascist national figureheads and movements ...

The Trump jailbreak plots would be incredible. 20 55-year old dudes in Oakleys dual wielding Glocks trying to take down the Manhattan detention center.

I can imagine a Trump jailbreak scenario where he tunnels through a long shit-strewn sewer and emerges at the end into another, different jail cell.

tuesday will almost certainly be wrong. he and his supporters were just guessing at the date, they don't have any special information. his primary motivation was to get out ahead of the news and prepare his followers to produce counter-news on the day that it does happen

one of my longstanding views is that the absence of criminal charges or consequences for trump has validated his behavior and neutralized some of his opposition since, the logic goes, if he was *actually* as bad an actor as his opponents say, he would already be in jail

I also think Bouie is right that Trump being actually indicted and arrested matters. I think it weakens him, just like him being impeached twice weakened him. That doesn't mean it kills him off, politically speaking, obviously it doesn't. But the whole "you'll only make him stronger" thing I think is bullshit. Seeing people arrested has an effect, sends a message. And anyway, if he broke the law he oughta be held accountable.

There's a guy across the street from the hotel I'm currently staying in with a series of hand-scrawled signs taped to a tree. I think he's reaching just about as many people as Milo Yiannapolous (sp?)...and I'm fine with that. I don't see that as a "downside" of anything, and the more of these fuckos it happens to, the better. Eventually each one of them will have 10-12 hardcore disciples and they'll yammer at each other in the political equivalent of twin talk and no one else will need to care at all.
