why ARE there random overlapped newspaper pages pinned on a wall though?

Issues that students were proud of.

Covering an escape hole in the wall, more like.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 March 2023 21:11 (one year ago) link

yeah, I'd check. Haphazard overlapping placement yet otherwise empty wall? There's at least some contraband back there.

it's all about that Campari. it's one of the most essential ingredients in a well made negroni

The world went and got itself in a big Campari.

Nice deep cut there!

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 18 March 2023 23:13 (one year ago) link

there are many Amaro liqueurs in addition to Campari

is it the most bitter? (the bitterness being an essential component of a Negroni). maybe it is

the others include Cynar, Nonino, Fernet-Branca, Gran Classico, Jägermeister (if you grew up in the 70s that's a big lol) and many more

Averna + bourbon/rye makes for a good Manhattan.

sounds good!

Campari has a distinct flavor of orange which I guess is definitive of a Negroni

I still want to see what a Bloody Mary tastes like with Aquavit, a spirit I've never tried

Dan S, Sunday, 19 March 2023 00:12 (one year ago) link

There is a subfamily of amari called fernet (not French, so it's "fer-NET") that blows Campari out of the water, bitterness-wise. Fernet Branca is the easiest to find. It can be tough going -- usually shows up in cocktails in 1/4 ounce as a spine-stiffener.

It's hugely popular in Argentina with Coke. I bought a bottle two years ago and haven't finished it.

i used to go to a place where fernet would often show up as an aperitif. for some reason i would always say "mmmhm - that's the stuff" after tasting it

it's a new day in the international landscape (z_tbd), Sunday, 19 March 2023 15:33 (one year ago) link

Fernet is one of those licorice/medicinal/anise-esque herbal spirits that I just slot along with absinthe adjacent stuff like pernod, pastis, herbsaint, et al., imo basically a more complex, refined Jägermeister. I don't find anything particularly pleasant about it as a sipper, save that it almost compels you to take your time if you don't want to barf. (See also: straight chartreuse and the like).

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 19 March 2023 15:41 (one year ago) link

how i miss those bygone nights of wild driving in the backroads, mixtape at full blast and the windows down, gently nibbling at a fernet

If you swap my usual plain black t-shirt for the one I got during bike week in daytona beach and my nerd glasses for the sunglasses my 8 year old thought were cool at the same trashy souvenir store I look pretty much ready to call covid a hoax and storm the capitol:

These WDYLL threads are mildly disturbing, like when you see pictures of radio DJs. You all just shouldn't have faces.

So I'm going to willfully mistranslate WDYLL and say...

Rufus turned 21 this month. Long-hair Cyrus is 18. Rufus is still at McGill in Montreal. Cyrus is at MassArt in Boston. It has been so much fun having them here. They are awesome.

did rufus, in his first year, live in molson or mcconnell or . . . the other one?

mookieproof, Monday, 25 December 2023 00:37 (four months ago) link

in his first year he was home on a computer due to the pandemic. he tried to go there and live in temporary housing in a hotel that they had set up for students but there was no point because he could never leave his room or see anybody so he came back home. it was sad. when he went back he lived in an apartment with other people. so he never lived in a dorm. he has a sweet scholarship and McGill pays for his housing. i think he's moving into his 4th different apartment with other people in january.
