i think it’s quite dumb & cheesy but i enjoy it and i do think Daisy’s character makes it a better watch

plus the songs are quite good

mr veg is annoyed that the “future” talking heads chatacters are to him in an undefined era & he wants to know WHEN ARE THEY lol

i thoght it was hilarious how billy turned into an alcoholic and got sober in a single episode

i thought the book was all right for what it was but if you're gonna make a fleetwood mac-ass behind the music narrative and have little to no fucking in it (even though i know they FUCK THROUGH SONG) then i just don't get what you're going for

excited to start the show, looks like a trainwreck

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 15 March 2023 20:53 (one year ago) link

i think the thing i enjoyed most about the book was the minutiae of the fake band's forming and recording, reminded me of creating fictional discographies complete with tracklists and concepts for the band i wanted to be in (but never started) in high school

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 15 March 2023 20:57 (one year ago) link

i couldn’t get into the book - the oral history format bugged me. they didn’t read like distinct voices to me? idk it felt like a gimmicky device that took me out of the story

daisy & billy are pretty well acted but the rest of the band seem kinda boring
i like the keyboard player but she never seems to get to do much

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 15 March 2023 20:59 (one year ago) link

My sister-in-law worked on this show, so I'm hatewatching along. Didn't even know it was a book until recently.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 15 March 2023 21:03 (one year ago) link

xp Just started watching it, but to answer your husband's question, I think there is a chyron at the beginning of the "Behind The Music" bit that states the oral history is in 1997.

I hate this show and I can't wait to watch the next episode (just 2 in so far).

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 15 March 2023 21:11 (one year ago) link

they didn’t read like distinct voices to me?

they sure don't!

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 15 March 2023 21:30 (one year ago) link

yeah I started reading the book based on the recommendation of a coworker but couldn't do it. an oral history doesn't work when it reads as if its all the same person telling the story!

exactly

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 15 March 2023 21:49 (one year ago) link

mr veg also highly annoyed that they sing ~near~ the microphone in the studio & not ~into~ the microphone but he also has been yelling about that for as long as i’ve known him lol

i loved the “Ooh La La” singalong in episode 3 with the candles during the power outage, very much their tiny dancer bus moment

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 15 March 2023 21:52 (one year ago) link

show is obviously terrible but I will watch to the end

the lyrics, which I believe come directly from the book, are so bad

Sam Claflin's jaw is a character unto itself

Number None, Wednesday, 15 March 2023 21:52 (one year ago) link

are the lyrics from the book? I thought this guy Blake Mills wrote all of them in conjunction with other songwriters (Jackson Browne, Mumford, etc); maybe they just did the music.

Portrayals of fictional bands are always very difficult to do convincingly. I finally finished David Mitchell's Utopia Avenue (which sucked) and it was really stark there that what a novelist thinks is good writing does not in fact necessarily translate to good lyrics.

I really like this show, because it is dumb. I particularly like Granddaughter Elvis's acting. She is annoying as fuck but clearly meant to be.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Thursday, 16 March 2023 14:05 (one year ago) link

yep, you're right. Which actually makes them worse

https://www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/a43276494/daisy-jones-and-the-six-regret-me-lyrics-meaning/

“What we didn’t do is, we didn’t want to give them the lyrics to the book because we were dealing with these unbelievable songwriters,” executive producer and co-showrunner Scott Neustadter told ELLE.com. “And Taylor was like, ‘I don’t want them to be handcuffed to my work. Let them write the songs themselves.’ So all of the songs play the same narrative functions in the show that they do in the book, but the lyrics are different.”

Number None, Thursday, 16 March 2023 14:52 (one year ago) link

only seen the first two episodes, found it weird how the band went overnight from 60s covers to full blown sub-bryan adams heartlands rock bullshit. found it very hard to see what the big shot producer saw in them at all, they're fucking terrible

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Thursday, 16 March 2023 15:32 (one year ago) link

will still probably hate-watch the rest though

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Thursday, 16 March 2023 15:33 (one year ago) link

I agree with all of this. I had low expectations going in (someone on Twitter mentioned Timothy Olyphant so obviously I had to watch a little, at least) but I quite like it. Never read the book, but I've obviously seen a lot of documentaries about Fleetwood Mac, the Laurel Canyon sound, etc etc.

trishyb, Thursday, 16 March 2023 15:36 (one year ago) link

i have completely missed Olyphant in this. was he in like the second episode? I fell asleep during that one.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Thursday, 16 March 2023 16:11 (one year ago) link

He's the tour manager who tells them he thinks they have potential, then is not delighted to see them when they arrive in LA.

trishyb, Thursday, 16 March 2023 16:30 (one year ago) link

yeah missed all of that

yay VG I was hoping you were going to start a thread, this show is very dumb and I'm going to watch it all

hooray <3

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 16 March 2023 21:02 (one year ago) link

i like that the 20 years later segments are squarely in the mid-90's, but the only people who look 20 years older are the two other dudes in the band (drummer and Graham). And they just stuck the english model keyboardist in a leather jacket and leather tie, like it's 1984.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Thursday, 16 March 2023 21:42 (one year ago) link

Matt Sweeney and Cass McCombs helped write songs for this

Cass just on one

also hatewatching, very slowly, probably as their songs are terrible and i often stop watching for a bit or skip over those bits, wondering what on earth teddy price hears in them. i'll concede the Ooh La La singalong was good though.

stirmonster, Monday, 20 March 2023 23:38 (one year ago) link

i'll rephrase the songs being terrible. they are distinctly not to my taste.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 21 March 2023 00:22 (one year ago) link

I’m three episodes in and tbh it’s better than I was expecting. But given how much most music biopics (fiction or not) give me hives, my bar was exceptionally low. So far I think the songs are just fine but none of them seem to be from the time they are living in. I’m getting real 90s vibes from a lot of the music.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 14:53 (one year ago) link

yeah they feel like people in the 90s trying to write a Fleetwood Mac song for Sheryl Crow, the closest they get is when they try to ape a FM style rhythm section, that if you're to gonna let me down let me down easy one

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 14:56 (one year ago) link

i rarely got a sense of what the songs actually sounded like, TBH. the mix in the show foregrounds the vocals so much that it's hard to hear the actual music. i can't be arsed to go listen to the soundtrack. I do think Elvis has a pretty good voice.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 18:15 (one year ago) link

Irish Prince plot line was so dumb, still laughing at that guy ("you'll regret this!!"). Only bit I really enjoyed was the NYC disco thing as that was the only part where I didn't actually hate any of the people involved (record label excepted)

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 18:20 (one year ago) link

that felt like a bit of another, probably more interesting, show was flown in

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 21:48 (one year ago) link

ugh just got to Irish Prince wtf
he looks like a facetuned Joe Jonas

this show, honestly. The amount of ludicrous character choices that resolve in a single episode is hilarious

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 5 April 2023 05:24 (one year ago) link

two weeks pass...

We just finished this last night. Yes, dumb and cheesy and really just a soap opera, but we were entertained enough to watch all the way. The last episode had so much DRAMA packed in, sort of hilarious.

this was pitched and marketed and promised pretty much exactly what it delivered which is much to its credit, the vibe absolutely carried it the cast are clearly having a ball at all the right times and keough is just a superstar
