Haven’t heard most of these. “Sugar Sugar” is such a big (real-life) hit, almost feels unfair to include it!

reluctant antonoff appreciator (morrisp), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 14:17 (one year ago) link

Weird not to have a Gorillaz song in here considering they might be the most succesful “fake” band.

Skeet Surfin' is the best song on TOP SECRET tho

satori enabler (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 14:18 (one year ago) link

Oh I see it’s for fake tv/cinema bands only. Seeing The Archies in there threw me off.

"Werewolf Bar Mitzvah", why not

Indexed, Tuesday, 14 March 2023 14:28 (one year ago) link

The only qualm I have with 'Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young' as the obvious choice is that 'Nowhere Fast' might be the better Ellen Aim track. Both hardcore bangers, though.

'Can You Picture That' is a very close second place. 'A Little Bit Alexis' is my pick for best sleeper comedy track.

Beautiful Bean Footage Fetishist (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 14:37 (one year ago) link

Damn it, OL, you stole my post re: Ellen Aim. They're both Steinman songs, for those who are unaware, and they are classic Steinman. 'Nowhere Fast' is the better of the two, for sure.

Despite my love for those tracks, teenage me has to vote for the Kelly Affair.

emil.y, Tuesday, 14 March 2023 14:41 (one year ago) link

surely "Empty Bottle" by Dekkar deserves a spot here

frogbs, Tuesday, 14 March 2023 14:43 (one year ago) link

I'm not up to date on my Hannah Montana lore, but does "Best of Both Worlds" really count? Like it was the theme song to the show, but was that song ever performed or mentioned within the universe of the show?

MarkoP, Tuesday, 14 March 2023 14:48 (one year ago) link

My real answer is probably "That Thing You Do," in the sense of "song I'm happy to hear at the grocery store." But I voted for "Please Mr. Kennedy" because it cracks me up, especially Adam Driver's interjections.

Which Empty Bottle is the question

I'd add Sweet Saturn Mine and BOTH Little Mouse and Machadaynu to the roster obv

"Sugar Sugar" isn't just the best song on the list, it's the best song ever recorded.

j.o.h.n. in evanston (john. a resident of chicago.), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 15:03 (one year ago) link

That's not the Carrie Nations' song I would have chosen... or the Spinal Tap one.

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 15:07 (one year ago) link

just occurred to me that there's a mistake in Big Bottom, "tuxedo" is American English and while I can imagine British people using it now, that generation wouldn't. obviously this is a very minor nitpick, but the film generally gets stuff right.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Tuesday, 14 March 2023 15:12 (one year ago) link

Pretty sure tuxedo has been in use on the UK for a long time!

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 15:13 (one year ago) link

Yeah, "Find It" is the Carrie Nations song they should've picked

عباس کیارستمی (Eric H.), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 15:15 (one year ago) link

xp think it would still be a dinner jacket or a suit jacket as of 1985

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Tuesday, 14 March 2023 15:16 (one year ago) link

But they wouldn't have been able to rhyme those with pink torpedo.

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 15:18 (one year ago) link

When I see her I like to whack it

Not quite the same ring to it tbh

No Hackett Required (Matt #2), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 15:20 (one year ago) link

Yeah, British people would know the word and be able to use it for the sake of a rhyme, it's not like we wouldn't have heard it. Weird thing to get hung up on, imo.

emil.y, Tuesday, 14 March 2023 15:23 (one year ago) link

Nothing from Fear Of A Black Hat, no credibility.

Aren't mud flaps American too? I think they're called mud guards in the UK.

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 March 2023 15:27 (one year ago) link

at least they didn't call it Big Fanny and change the meaning of the song completely in the UK

From animated bands:

The Hex Girls from Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost. Not sure whether I'm a Hex Girl or Earth, Wind, Fire, and Air is the better song. They have had a few more songs throughout the years as well. They've enjoyed enough of a resurgence that there is copious Hot Topic merch devoted to them now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=attfhQWmVNA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K6YXa22owc

Would also recommend Everything's Gonna Be Alright by the Chipmunks & Chipettes, from Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQMf3rVRAfE

Not sure if the Girls of Rock & Roll would count, because it was originally used in The Malibu Bikini Shop before ending up as another Chipmunks/Chipettes duet in the Chipmunk Adventure, but it's a classic too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB0x4ui5ANw

In the non-animated category, it is a truly guilty pleasure that I get Ming Tea's BBC stuck in my head every time someone mentions the BBC.

Light of Day by the Barbusters was a big song for me when I was a kid, because the video got a lot of play on Nick Rocks. I never saw the movie, but owned the soundtrack.

Only recently learned that Trent Reznor has a brief scene in the movie, as part of the band The Problems, who are ridiculed by both Michael McKean and Michael J. Fox. The Problems were portrayed by the actual band he was in at the time, except that their real name was Exotic Birds.

No idea what the song title is, but does it matter when you have Richard Pryor coming into American living rooms in 1977 dressed in proto-corpsepaint, giving drugs to the mostly white audience (including a young Sandra Bernhard who writer for the show), and then literally killing them all?

Hell yeah!
