ā€• z_tbd, Wednesday, March 8, 2023 11:06 AM (forty minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

im sure you could find this info if you wanted its def tracked by various industry entities and their are activists that put together lists who feel like have been pretty successful in the case of fox news at least there arent a ton of blue chip advertisers on there

it's funny how there was that whole thing about fox news knowingly lying to their own viewers and how everyone knew it from the top to the bottom in the organization, but yet, none of their viewers cared. fox continues to dominate the ratings as if nothing happened. and i don't think any advertisers left, either (?)

yeah this is something that really others me about conservatives. I get that they don't care about hypocrisy, their entire political philosophy is "we get to make the rules and you don't", but like...even when they find out the people they listen to 24/7 are straight up bullshitting them, they just don't care. will Tucker saying he "hated Trump passionately" affect his viewership at all?? not a chance. will the fact that they've been so provably wrong about everything time and time again mean a thing? no way. and we still have to have "good-spirited debates" with these folks? give me a break

frogbs, Thursday, 9 March 2023 18:37 (one year ago) link

i regret that i spent years believing that if they were convincingly shown that they were being lied to, it would make any difference at all on their actions. it doesn't. "debating" or arguing things with people i knew that i cared about, randos at a bar, the comment section of watts up with that, people in the family, everything. such a complete waste of time and a terrible headspace to be in.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 9 March 2023 19:18 (one year ago) link

yup I get into arguments with a family member about this dumb shit and I always try to stop myself because there is just no winning. recently he's onto this idea that the vaccine is causing a lot of young healthy people to suddenly die, that it's causing all these crazy heart problems and clotting issues and it's all just going completely unreported. and his evidence is a very long documentary hosted on some crazy rightwing site. I don't watch it but if you look it up you can see all the ways it's wrong. like obviously wrong.

for example their 'evidence' involves video footage of events that were taken in 2018 or 2019, well before the vaccine, sometimes even before Covid itself. and you can prove it too. here's the footage. here's where that footage is from. here's the date on it. OBVIOUSLY THE FILMMAKERS KNEW THIS and included it anyway because they think you're too stupid to look it up. one would think that would be the end of it. oh, but it's not. instead its like "well you're just nitpicking" or "you didn't address the other points, if even a fraction is true this is a big deal", or worst of all "I suspect maybe they intended to put that in there" for whatever reason. THAT is the sort of worldview that I think is going to make shit much worse than it has to be. How many people have died of Covid thanks to this bullshit???

frogbs, Thursday, 9 March 2023 19:22 (one year ago) link

I am always flabbergasted by this covid denial shit and yet we're at the point where I just watched a congressional hearing where Jim Jordan and Matt Taibbi were telling me that the republic is in danger because someone at the NHO wrote an email about countering an RFK Jr. anti-vax tweet.

INDEPENDENTS DAY BY STEVEN SPILBERG (President Keyes), Thursday, 9 March 2023 19:29 (one year ago) link

I know this won't convince anyone, but I'd point out that over 72% of the entire global population has taken covid vaccines, so if it were killing lots of people it would be very obvious to everyone.

z_tbd, Thursday, 9 March 2023 19:35 (one year ago) link

the argument is that it is but it's not actually reported that way. like "oh there's a huge uptick in MY-OH-CAR-DYE-TIS and it's because of the vaccine". which is fucking maddening because the uptick is due to Covid itself!! either way "they" are burying the story, "they" are taking orders, "they" are getting paid off, blah blah blah. it's all in plain view! you see that dude's heart stop on Monday Night Football? yep. that was the vaccine too.

idk if anyone's studied this but it has been shown that Republican voters are dying of COVID at a significantly higher rate than Dems, which might have made a difference these midterms

and certainly in 2020

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 March 2023 19:39 (one year ago) link

xxp

yes, but the point is that the vaccine has been taken by so many people that if it posed a serious health risk it wouldn't be something the media could hide because we'd all know lots of people dropping dead because of it

no, you're 100% otm Moodles, which is why watching people that once seemed reasonable say "there just seems to be something about this vaccine" got infuriating to the point where I quit reading all of the rhetoric altogether.

these people are also bad with numbers though. like "surely this would happen to someone I know" is not really something that goes through their head. they dont know how "the media" actually works because they don't watch real news. same as the whole thing about how undocumented folks are getting 100k/year in government assistance. no I don't know any personally but everyone knows they're all over the place. they're with the AR-15s that are saving lives on a daily basis

New: Prosecutors Signal Criminal Charges for Trump Are Likely https://t.co/O5uuprV1d4

— Jonah Bromwich (@Jonesieman) March 9, 2023

The Manhattan district attorneyā€™s office recently signaled to Donald J. Trumpā€™s lawyers that he could face criminal charges for his role in the payment of hush money to a porn star, the strongest indication yet that prosecutors are nearing an indictment of the former president, according to four people with knowledge of the matter.

The prosecutors offered Mr. Trump the chance to testify next week before the grand jury that has been hearing evidence in the potential case, the people said. Such offers almost always indicate an indictment is close; it would be unusual for the district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, to notify a potential defendant without ultimately seeking charges against him.

In New York, potential defendants have the right to answer questions in the grand jury before they are indicted, but they rarely testify, and Mr. Trump is likely to decline the offer. His lawyers could also meet privately with the prosecutors in hopes of fending off criminal charges.

Any case would mark the first indictment of a former American president, and could upend the 2024 presidential race. It would also elevate Mr. Bragg to the national stage, though not without risk.

z_tbd, Thursday, 9 March 2023 23:17 (one year ago) link

sigh

In New York, falsifying business records can amount to a crime, albeit a misdemeanor. To elevate the crime to a felony charge, Mr. Braggā€™s prosecutors must show that Mr. Trumpā€™s ā€œintent to defraudā€ included an intent to commit or conceal a second crime.

In this case, that second crime could be a violation of New York State election law. While hush money is not inherently illegal, the prosecutors could argue that the $130,000 payout effectively became an improper donation to Mr. Trumpā€™s campaign, under the theory that because the money silenced Ms. Daniels, it benefited his candidacy.

Combining the criminal charge with a violation of state election law would be a novel legal theory for any criminal case, let alone one against the former president, raising the possibility that a judge or appellate court could throw it out or reduce the felony charge to a misdemeanor.

Some real "Sending Our Love Down the Well" energy

8. USAA (2.0 million)

this is a side point, but what is the deal with USAA? they do insane amounts of advertising, so much on NFL games which is some of the most expensive ad slots that exist...all to market and insurance company who can't sell to anyone who didn't serve in the military? always seemed off to me

heck even Rob Gronkowski can't get insurance through them

USAA rules, we love them.

were you in the military? or are there ways around it?

feels like Cartmanland kinda

My dad was in the Air Force in the early '70s. He must have become a USAA member at some point, because USAA members can pass membership to their kids afaict in perpetuity. I have no other connections to the military, but my kids should be able to use USAA, too.

definitely verbatim conversation quotes:

Trump contended that DeSantis pleaded with him for an endorsement during his first run for governor, when polls showed him trailing his primary challenger, then-Florida agricultural commissioner Adam Putnam.

ā€œI said ā€˜You are so dead right now you are not going, no endorsement is going to save you. George Washington wonā€™t save you.ā€™ He said, ā€˜Iā€™m telling you, if you endorse me, I have a chance,ā€™ā€ Trump said.
