>is dj lemahieu back?

until he isn't!

>who the hell is the shortstop?

Peraza probably. I could see Volpe moving to 2nd, hype aside and he *probably* needs reps above AA so may as well manipulate his service time while he's getting them.

>will they trade isiah kiner-falea?

To whom and for what is the question. More likely to trade Gleyber and Glyber suffers from the Maxim Afinogenov truism where anyone as good as Gleyber Torres should probably be better than Gleyber Torres

Reader email to Robert Christgau:

Opening Day (with Volpe wearing the #11 once worn by Hector Lopez, etc.), plus the recent death of Joe Pepitone, has me wondering if you’re willing to construct a lineup of your all-time favorite Yankees, limiting yourself to those players who have played during your decades of fandom. You’re allowed a DH even if they weren’t around during their careers. Also one right-handed and one lefty starter, plus a reliever.
— Ben Greene, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

How can I say no? C: Yogi Berra; 1B: Don Mattingly 2B: Bobby Richardson; 3B: Graig Nettles; SS: Derek Jeter (sorry Phil, I’ll never forget you); LF: Dave Winfield; CF: Mickey Mantle (though DiMaggio did hang in there till 1951, I never saw him at his best); RF: Aaron Judge; DH: Reggie Jackson (yah yah A-Rod); RHP: David Cone (fuck Roger Clemens); LHP: Ron Guidry (sorry, Whitey); Relief (duh): Mariano Rivera.

clemenza, Wednesday, 19 April 2023 13:06 (one year ago) link

Most of that seems fine, although Willie Randolph was a much better player than Bobby Richardson (who somehow managed to lead off 162 games for the '61 Yankees and score all of 80 runs--.295 OBP).

Only when it counted

“He hit .471 with two homers and six runs batted in the 1998 World Series, and was named the Most Valuable Player. He hit 2 home runs in Game 3 of the World Series, including one off of Padres closer Trevor Hoffman to give the Yankees a 5-3 lead in the 8th helping propel the Yankees to a 3-0 Series lead.”

With Judge once again pressed into center field duty and Stanton down, right field has been a grab bag, where Cordero has the most playing time (43 PA). Collectively, the five players who have spent time there have hit — and here I’ll urge you to cover the eyes and ears of any small children within reach — .152/.179/.304 for a 25 wRC+. Comparatively speaking, recently released staring pitcher Madison Bumgarner would be an upgrade with his career .172/.232/.292 line and 44 wRC+.

last week he was quoted as saying "I feel like I'm the worst pitcher in baseball," at this point what do you have to lose by giving someone in AAA a shot and letting him rest/work on whatever's going on?

absolutely no idea what they're doing on any level

i actually like aaron boone but a half-decent manager might have noticed that rizzo spent the last two months in a fog.

they have judge and they have cole. and then they have like a dozen injured 36-year-olds and anthony volpe (who sucks). i thought carlos rendon was a good signing! but this team is deeply fucked. has there ever before been a $300m last-place team?

i do love the higster tho

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 August 2023 05:56 (eight months ago) link

I mean, as a hater and loser I’ve never followed them that closely, but I kind of assumed that part of the Yankee machine involved actually working with their players and trying to fix problems as they arose. Now it genuinely seems like an organization that feeds in $300 million to the machine and just leaves it to run.

i think he's been a v. good GM, and it's not his fault that rodon got hurt, and i suspect that signing judge to the gargantuan contract that will haunt the team for years to come was a decision made over his head

but this is a poorly assembled team, and doing *nothing* at the trade deadline was a dereliction of duty

donaldson trade, hicks contract, lemahieu contract, punting the trade deadline, sitting out free agency every other year to get under the luxury tax

that last bit doesn’t depend on the gm, it’ll likely be ownership policy for as long as the steinbrenners own the team, but still, he’s had the job for 25 years and it’s culminated in this. gotta be someone out there who can do better with $309 mil

I don’t really watch the Yankees as much as I used to since I got MLB.tv and have a choice of games to watch, within my timezone anyway, but the wider Yankee media environment is high art in many ways. It reminds me very much of classic Arsenal fan TV during the bad Wenger days.

The apex of Yankee media is ofc Talkin’ Yanks, which is hosted by baseball video specialist Jomboy and his sidekick Talkin’ Jake. When I tell you these are high art. The best ones to watch are, obviously, when something bad happens. This is even truer when Aaron Boone has to go on - he is contractually obliged to appear on this show which is WILD - and they pepper him with questions. But let’s rewind.

The show has a very specific dynamic. Jomboy takes the role of Sad Dad Who Is Disappointed in the Yankees. Jake is younger, sarcastic, constantly boiling with fury. When Boone is on the show feeding them a line of bullshit, I’m constantly watching Jake. He keeps his face rigidly still, while his eyes SCREAM with fury. He sometimes wears T-shirts on the show mocking things Boone had said. He is the personification of the booing Yankee fan who throws stuff from the stands on the field, except what that person might be like on a day to day basis.

On the normal show, a conversation might go like this:

Jomboy (dejectedly): I don’t know, Jake. I think we thought it would all be ok when Judge came back, but the roster problems…

Jake (sarcastically): well it would have been nice if the front office had thought to pick up an outfielder…or a left fielder…or watching this team wasn’t an exercise in absolutely exquisite AGONY

the producer guy who speaks in a monotone whose name i can never remember: it would be really nice if this yankees team could win a game or just be shot into space

Jake: Watching (other team), you know what I noticed? They play with PASSION. They play to WIN. Like the Yankees team I grew up watching!

Jomboy: (almost on the floor in despair) it used to be the Yankees Way.

I’m telling you guys. It’s art.

Would love to see a breakdown of sad/mad Yankees media/fans vs sad/mad Mets media/fans this year. As a Mets fan I read the above and think “cute, they feel a sense of sharpness in regards to this seemingly tame season of adversity”.

I could not possibly feel less sorry for the Yankees than I do right now.

Cashman's success over a 25 year period is incredible, and it doesn't just come down to money. But every time the Yankees have an off-year, I wonder whether he has the motivation to do this anymore. Nobody has ever navigated all the Steinbrenner BS better than him, but how long until he simply wants a break from it all?
