waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 1 March 2023 19:22 (one year ago) link

Package "delivered" to my development group mailbox 2.5 hrs ago. Checked my mailbox and no package. Online tracking form says give it 24 hrs before reporting (assuming a trust in people walking wrongly delivered mail to the right house? which I've done in the past here, so logical, I guess)

Not that this Zebra cd is a critical delivery (although ... Zebra!), but tired of being defensive for the USPS under DeJoy, and yet having intermittent delivery failure and delivery dread on anything ordered. Almost a Seinfeldian reservations rant, re: the implicit trust in having a package smoothly delivered, watching the delivery status daily, and being disappointed at the end.

My parents, living on an island in the Pac NW, talk about FedEx drivers seemingly randomizing their deliveries (packages left on ferry terminal, in the island-side ferry shelter, at the top of lanes for the houses at end, etc.). And personally, Amazon deliveries are hit or miss re: leaving items leaning against my back garage or making an effort to put it out of general sight on the front porch. Easier just to specify Amazon dropbox delivering to the local Walgreens pharmacy.

Maybe this is rational annoyance, but feels irrational in that I'll probably get the disc in a few days and really, immediate gratification isn't an issue.

I suspect that, in addition to some legitimate cases of human/machine error, that some mail carriers are intentionally marking items delivered before they're delivered, to try and meet whatever draconian mail delivery metrics are in place, that they can't realistically meet due to DeJoy's kneecapping of the USPS. if that's the case, I can't say I blame em, but depending on the package, can be fairly stressful.

my brother's engagement ring was marked 'delivered' AND marked as signed for when I was housesitting for him, but nobody had left anything or come to the door. i eventually found the mailman who produced the package minutes later when I asked about it, ending my brother's brief panic attack.

waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal), Thursday, 2 March 2023 01:24 (one year ago) link

Yep, agreed - setting unrealistic metrics does drive error. I'd rather wait a day for a package, than stress over an incorrect delivered status.

Locally, USPS has notified our various HOAs that thieves have duplicated group mailbox passkeys, which adds an additional layer of stress.

NHS have sent me a 3rd copy of their GP Patient Survey asking me how booking appointments at the local surgery works and what i think of that. only i've not been there for ~4 years now and i know everything got turned upside down by covid so any information i give is likely to be wrong.

This commercial with this prissy female voice talking about "the vag".

I'm sorry but dollars the way they center "the vag" - terfy and gross.

This is not being liberated. You have "a vag". Big deal. Talking about it in a commercial is not a milestone for human rights. FFS.

In more than 8 years and nearly 7800 posts I can't believe no one has once mentioned gas-powered, obnoxious leaf blowers. Hating them is obviously not irrational, but what makes me want to strangle the operator of one of these instruments of Satan is when they have a twitchy trigger finger so the noise is constantly modulating every three to five seconds, as in: rrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrr

I swear some day I will go berserker on one of these idiots.

leaf blowers are one thing in society that i think everybody hates. i had to run one at an old job sometimes and my supervisor explicitly said, "this is a last resort and if you need to use it, you will have to explain yourself." lol

I remember visiting DC one time and the roar of gas-powered leaf blowers was coming from the garden in front of the EPA building.

Can't decide how rational or irrational this anger is, but goddamn, if you are a small business that is going to close for trainings during hours you are normally otherwise open, maybe share that info in advance somewhere? For the third time in about six months, I walked the six blocks to the local coffee shop that is the only non-Starbucks option near my office, only to find it closed for "training". I was there yesterday around the same time, no sign noting this. Nothing on the website, nothing on any of the shop's social media.

what is, exactly, the point of sitting in a lane idling with your emergency flashers on, when there are ample parking spaces around where you could pull into to do whatever you're doing and not get in people's way?

i get it if you're like, pulling up to a front door to drop someone off quickly, but half the time I come into my neighborhood, the person in front of me abruptly stops, and on come the blinkers, and they just aimlessly sit there for 5-10 minutes, making everybody go around them. a lot of them are delivery drivers but it's like, come on, your car isn't going to get towed in the 25 seconds it takes for you to leave and come back to your car, and the only spots off-limits have signs in front of htem.

not one, but two separate individuals on two separate days joined a one-on-one meeting I scheduled a few minutes prior to start time, but when I joined at start time, they were gone, and not only that, went immediately afk and didn't return for over an hour.

what in the actual hell? like, you join an informal meeting early, see nobody there, and assume it's cancelled, even though it hasn't started yet?

so bizarre

I am 48 years old and I don't think I've ever successfully opened a loaf of bread. The 'tie' looks like it should have some logical method of opening but I've yet to find it, beyond pulling at the two bits of plastic and tightening its death grip on the neck of the plastic. I then, through tears of shame and rage, tear at the plastic, leaving a gaping hole that can never adequately be patched, thus decreasing the life of the loaf.
This has just happened again. I am now going outside. I may be some time.
Yrs, Chinaski.

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Sunday, 26 March 2023 13:42 (one year ago) link

Are you talking about the little flat plastic thing with a slot in it?

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 26 March 2023 15:39 (one year ago) link

I can work those (sort of). This is like a bit of sellotape wrapped around the neck of plastic - usually around own brand bread (Sainsbury's, this time - we were spoiling ourselves).

This must be incomprehensible to anyone outside the UK, sorry!

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Sunday, 26 March 2023 17:25 (one year ago) link

Oh I know what you mean. I can't figure that one either

Oh god.. I hate those. I guess it's supposed to be possible to peel the fused together ends apart and release the cinched up neck of the sack (and then.. reseal it when you're done?) but I doubt it has ever been done

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 26 March 2023 17:29 (one year ago) link

My advice on this is to cut the tie up the middle with a small scissors or knife, meaning you can twist the bag closed again after taking bread out.

limb tins & cum (gyac), Sunday, 26 March 2023 17:37 (one year ago) link

I can usually part those as the manufacturer intended but closing the bread up again? Nope.

piedro àlamodevar (wins), Sunday, 26 March 2023 17:52 (one year ago) link

I have tried with scissors, but they would need to be elfin to get under the sellotape!

I am heartened that it's not just me. And if I see Paxton in the street, I'll clip him, quite frankly.

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Sunday, 26 March 2023 17:55 (one year ago) link

Scissors or tip of a sharp knife is pretty much the only way to deal with that tape-closure that has a prayer of working. I advise you to stick to that method and just accept your defeats along with the occasional victory. It's better than rage-rending the bag. You can always save that approach for the emotional satisfaction of the attack and destruction of the foe.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 26 March 2023 18:17 (one year ago) link

the bread i buy (50/50) has the sellotape but the two ends of the sellotape has paper on them to stop it sticking to itself. pull the ends apart, ripping the paper, keep pulling to open the bag.

it's not 100% but works most times

koogs, Sunday, 26 March 2023 18:35 (one year ago) link

i just pull apart the tape and can usually reseal it. i like to have the best-before date kept on it as we have various loaves/ bread products out, and they're usually seedy ones, so hard to spot mould :-l

kinder, Sunday, 26 March 2023 19:12 (one year ago) link

this is usually branded bread though. those really narrow hardcore tape closures - no chance

kinder, Sunday, 26 March 2023 19:14 (one year ago) link

I went to the hardware store yesterday and purchased a box cutter/utility knife, and now I realize I will need a pair of scissors — which I don't have — to cut the knife out of its plastic packaging.

but also fuck you (unperson), Sunday, 26 March 2023 19:39 (one year ago) link

I cut the tape like gyac mentioned, then use a previously saved Paxton clip to reseal the bag.

the use of "boomer" in the colloquial sense. i don't _mind_ being called a boomer, i'm not a prescriptivist, but i had this conversation today:

"yeah my mom's a boomer"
