As beloved as “Teenage Dirtbag” is, it’s hard to imagine that any listener has spent too much time obsessing over the glitchy, three-note, synth-like sound that briefly shows up in the first chorus, right after the “she rings my bell” line. Still, last September, Brown attempted to crowdsource its origin, offering an engineering credit for anyone who could track it down. He was unsuccessful, and ended up having to attempt to reproduce the sound on his own.

“It turned out to be so much more complicated than we could have imagined,” Brown says, before explaining the process at length.

“We spent nine days transposing and moving harmonies around, moving the sound to different harmonies so that it sounded like the original, because we don’t know what the original sound was. It was just a phone thing sampled from somewhere,” he says. “It took us nine days until two o’clock in the morning. We were freaking out, like, ‘What the fuck? How do we do it?’ Anyway, we got there, but the process was like, ‘You gotta be fucking kidding me.’ We had to do all this research on DTMF, the Bell telephone system, to figure out what the notes corresponded to. … The sound happens again in the third verse, and they’re actually different harmonies. We got the first verse right, and the third verse wrong, so we had to start the transposing process all over again. That was another three days.”

I like this, about the Dilla beat for Stakes is High:

Tip is playing this new beat for Pos from Dilla and based on the history that those two have, anytime Pos gave a head nod to some shit, Q-Tip ended up keeping the beat and try to make something out of it, so he tried to use reverse psychology on this particular one. “Stakes is High” came up on the beat, Pos kind of held back. He was like, “What do you think of this beat?” “Stakes Is High” beat playing and Pos was like, “It’s all right. It’s OK” but then secretly goes off in the corner and calls Dave was like, Yo! This is the fucking beat. This is it right here. I’ve got to figure out how to get it but this is it. Then went from that point on. Pos reaching out to Dilla separately.

It's great to hear these again. All my CDs have been in storage for so long, it's been awhile. Remasters sound great so far and I haven't noticed much differences in samples, really. MIght be awhile before I listen to much else lol

it's funny, at the time it seemed like such a turn, but de la soul as dead doesn't sound like nearly as much of a departure from 3 feet high as it did then

It seemed to be more in the marketing: "We don't want people to call us hippies"

yeah definitely, and obviously the cover with the broken flowerpot, the ring ring video being black and white,i think that affected how i perceived it. but stuff like oodles or pease porridge etc could totally be on 3 feet.
