Hey UMS!

I will put up something from a band I got to see live recently and really liked. Not gonna try to explain it too much, guess it is hardcore leaning punk rock but kind of swings and leans rock a bit more than some. At times the guitars give me a bit of a Monorchid feel for some reason, but yeah I dig this. From Richmond. In particular the song "Great Closing Sleep" rules in my opinion.

Don’t know much about 2023 punk; this popped up in my Twitter feed

Lies They Tell Our Children by Anti-Flag. This and their past works are made for every generation suffering under corruption.

weird little tape featured in Bandcamp's "New and Notable" section today:

- Josnali - Enemy Talk EP
- "Call it egg punk or Devo-garage or whatever you like: this EP from Indonesian band Josnali has sass, charm, and lo-fi hooks to spare."
- Three tracks in 2:30

Nice, will check this out

yeah. three more songs/minutes would've been nice!

today's rolling punk thread album of the week is from guitar-less (!) Mississippi hardcore-meets-hip-hop-ish band MSPAINT, who seem capable of filling this year's Turnstile lane:

Cannot for the life of me get into Turnstile

I liked that last record but don't really know any of their previous stuff. Apparently they've blown up pretty big?

alpine static, Thursday, 9 March 2023 15:59 (one year ago) link

Hattiesburg seemingly has a pretty great punk/hardcore community. Just saw Judy and the Jerks a couple of months ago and it ripped! MSPAINT very different but seem cool, enjoying it after a couple of tracks.

grandavis, Thursday, 9 March 2023 16:08 (one year ago) link

I know this is not exactly new, but it is new to me (still making my way through recommendations from lists last year, pretty sure this came for the Sorry State Records employee lists). Just a really good blast of straightforward guitar driven punk from Australia. Band is Split System. Put my favorite song up which will pretty much tell you whether you would wanna listen to more (apologies if this was covered last year, came out towards the end of the year though).

Been enjoying this Waste Man EP. Short and sweet with good riffs and some range across the three songs. A pretty cool sound overall.

saw Public Acid last night in a warehouse in Richmond— sick set

https://publicacid.bandcamp.com/album/condemnation-ep

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Monday, 1 May 2023 12:14 (eleven months ago) link

Bet that would sound good live. Lots of good shows in Richmond these days, hope to make some more here and there.

grandavis, Wednesday, 3 May 2023 12:53 (eleven months ago) link

it was really good, tight drumming and excellent bass, and shockingly, the vocals were mixed in a similar way as on the records— not too high in the mix, so it sounded sort of scuzzy but great at the same time.

Sunami is my neighbor's band and they are incredibly nice dudes and super talented and have incredible amounts of hype. Go see them play if they come to your town.

three weeks pass...

garage punk really only works when the band taps into some kinda feral mutant energy that takes it somewhere, like early oblivions or jay reatard or blind shake or mummies...The Stools from Detroit have it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7y0lqLcFNI

man I have really been digging The Mummies lately

thanks ums

NY Times : The day’s lineup, a showcase for the respected Baltimore and New York label Flatspot, illustrated how hardcore is rapidly diverging from its former status as an outlet for largely white, male aggression. The three friends from Atlanta arrived just in time to catch the end of a raucous set by Buggin, a Chicago quartet featuring the caustic shout of its nonbinary Black singer, Bryanna Bennett. The bill also included two female-fronted acts, Baltimore’s Jivebomb and Scowl, from Santa Cruz, Calif.; Australia’s Speed, featuring members of Asian descent; Colombia’s Raw Brigade; and Regulate, whose Colombia-born frontman, Sebastian Paba, grappled with Eurocentric beauty standards on the 2022 track “Hair.”

hi guys what'd i miss?

I have a weekend ticket for the last ever Static Shock Weekend. is punk dead? wtf am I going to do next year

Colonel Poo, Friday, 28 July 2023 23:54 (eight months ago) link

this year I've seen "retirement tours (except they are still going to do festivals)" by UK Subs and Cockney Rejects, matinee gigs for the old folks by Rubella Ballet, Chaotic Dischord and Disorder, and some gigs by people who can't collect their pension yet by Bad Breeding, Scowl, Flash, Rat Cage, Sniffany & the Nits, Alien Nosejob, the Spits/Private Function and Powerplant.

next week I'm seeing TSOL and Toxic Reasons, and possibly Gang Green, but there is industrial action on the trains so not sure if I can actually get there.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 29 July 2023 01:34 (eight months ago) link

good local live band I've seen recently but don't think they've released anything is Electric Cowboy Club, kind of demented Cramps type thing where the singer will crawl around the floor in the audience. they supported the Exploited here a few months ago, and I spoke to their singer recently and he said Wattie came up to him and said he doesn't usually watch support bands but he really liked them lol

v happy this thread is getting posts. will catch up on these in a bit.

I am pretty psyched for this hardcore weekender coming up in March that's got Japanese crasher crust legends Framtid headlining. It's a pretty ridiculous line-up in general but I've seen a lot of the bands before anyway

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 21 December 2023 00:21 (three months ago) link

this is the line-up:

Framtid
Quarantine
The Flex
T.S. Warspite
The Annihilated
Stingray
Echo Chamber
Mazandaran
Desorden
Hellscape
Catastrophe

Went to see Armitage Shanks reunion gig tonight. My favourite toilet themed punk band. I love them. Shirts Off is one of my favourite punk songs of all time, esp the version with Billy Childish singing

trying to narrow down to the 20 best punk albums of 2023 and i've got like 50 contenders. bleh.

one that hasn't been posted to this thread all year but should've been is Home Front's Games of Power:

I am posting because I saw that the Freeze are playing at Rebellion festival this year. I probably won't go to Rebellion festival but this might mean they play a London gig around that weekend. they might not, the thing with US bands playing London gigs around Rebellion festival is that they are always absolutely dead, because most of the people that would go to them are at Rebellion festival. I once saw Channel 3 play to the support band, me and maybe 3 other people at the Dublin Castle. when the Freeze last came over (about 14 years ago I think) I saw them at the Camden Underworld and they cordoned off the main bar because there weren't enough people to open the bar.

Anyway, I love the Freeze, and I hope I get to see them again

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 30 December 2023 02:59 (three months ago) link

I did play my Home Front LP btw. it's obv v derivative and you can play spot the influence esp that Suicide one lol. but they pretty much nail it and they are fun live so I can dig it.

oh it's nearly 8:30 here now I just got home and am pretty fucked tbh. I was at a party in Peacehaven so I am listening to Peter & The Test Tube Babies because they have a song about Peacehaven. gotta say I think it must've been quite different in the early 80s. there were no gangs of marauding teenagers. it was quite windy tbf maybe that put them off
