...and that's Cake doing Barry White up there.

Many xps re: the Great Expectations soundtrack. I owned that! I remember that Lauren Christy song as being really amazing. I also remember seeing that Sheryl Crow played accordion on that Scott Weiland track

Just remembered this, when trying to recall where the Foo Fighters version of "Baker Street" came from. It's a two-disc set called "Interpretations" from EMI's Essentials series in 1998, which features contemporary EMI artists covering EMI catalogue classics.

It totally belongs here.

John Butler–Ode To Billy Joe (Bobbie Gentry)
Belinda Carlisle & Radiator–Submission (Sex Pistols)
Cecil–When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman (Dr. Hook)
Dubstar–Jealousy (Pet Shop Boys)
Feline –The Air That I Breathe (Hollies)
Foo Fighters–Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty)
Fun Lovin' Criminals–We Have All The Time In The World (Louis Armstrong)
Gluebound–Where Did Our Love Go (Supremes)
Jesus Jones–Go Buddy Go (Stranglers)
Kenickie Feat. Errol Brown–It Started With A Kiss (Hot Chocolate)
My Life Story–Duchess (Stranglers)
Octopus –Starman (David Bowie)
Mike Scott–Why Should I Love You? (Kate Bush)
Sparklehorse Feat. Thom Yorke– lWish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)
The Supernaturals–You're My Best Friend (Queen)
Terrorvision–Forever & Ever (Silk)
White Buffalo–Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)
White Town–Rhinestone Cowboy (Glen Campbell)
Robbie Williams–Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye (Ella Fitzgerald)
Wireless –See Emily Play (Pink Floyd)
World Party–Martha My Dear (Beatles)
Murray Lachlan Young–Do Wah Diddy Diddy (Manfred Mann)

Looking at an old Spin (#onethread), there's an ad for a sequel to the Hackers soundtrack! Which is basically a NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL TECHNO comp in disguise.

3. Little Wonder (David Bowie) 5:30
4. Fire (Scooter) 3:31
5. Narcotic Influence 2 (Empirion) 5:55
6. Remember (BT) 8:00

100% fire tho

Siegbran, Thursday, 12 October 2023 14:59 (six months ago) link

Well, yeah. But the shamelessness of including one song from the film, several tracks that straight -up didn't exist until after the release of the film, and releasing the whole thing two years after it was out of theatres is very much in the spirit of this thread.

It's sort of a "If You Liked the Hackers Soundtrack" playlist

XP <two songs from the film> (the Leftfield tracks)

that playlist rules. should probably have at least one tune by Fluke in place of Leftfield but whatever. IMO "Fire" by Scooter belongs on every single late 90s soundtrack that song rules so fucking much

A similar example is the Trainspotting #2 CD from 1997 - though to its credit there it still has a few songs from the film (including Dark & Long - criminal that it couldn't make vol 1).

Trainspotting 2 made a little more sense, as its release more or less tied into the video/laser disc release of the film. Whereas the other Hackers collection feels more like an after the fact cash grab (albeit a very well-curated one) put together to compete with the original MTV AMP comp and the still-selling original Hackers album.

I am confident that there are much worse records than any of these.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 12 October 2023 22:51 (six months ago) link

Hackers had yet ANOTHER volume after that. Now is it shameless?

Kind of surprised they didn't at least try to squeeze out a couple as direct to video joints.

Not soundtracks in any meaningful sense - just tie-ins to the Premiership, with a few genuine advert/opening titles tracks included and denoted as such - but I'm very fond of both

"Hackers to the 3rd power" was 1999 (i think) which could serve as proof for how quickly the film earned its cult status.

Who else picked up the 2nd Trainspotting soundtrack from the used bin at Sam Goody and had the cashier be like "there's a sequel??"

billstevejim, Friday, 13 October 2023 17:20 (six months ago) link

As a kid I first knew of Trainspotting #2 through the back page of the booklet of this comp

https://www.discogs.com/release/2343064-Various-The-BestAnthemsEver

and accordingly thought there were two Trainspotting films for years (whatever Trainspotting, which I also knew through the Lust for Life video, even was)

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 14 October 2023 16:11 (six months ago) link

To confuse things more, there eventually was a mediocre sequel to Trainspotting called "T2 Trainspotting" with its own soundtrack. Not sure why they went with that title when a far far more iconic sequel which is commonly called T2 exists

Iggy Pop - Lust For Life (The Prodigy Remix)
High Contrast – Shotgun Mouthwash
Wolf Alice – Silk
Young Fathers – Get Up
Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Relax
Underworld And Ewen Bremner - Eventually But (Spud's Letter To Gail)
Young Fathers – Only God Knows
The Rubberbandits - Dad's Best Friend
Blondie - Dreaming
Queen - Radio Ga Ga
Run-DMC Vs Jason Nevins - It's Like That
The Clash - (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais
Young Fathers - Rain Or Shine
Fat White Family - Whitest Boy On The Beach
Underworld - Slow Slippy

Vinnie, Saturday, 14 October 2023 21:01 (six months ago) link

That was in fact the joke, according to Danny Boyle:

“I always thought that if these characters were asked to do a sequel they would agree reluctantly and say ‘all right but you have got to call it T2 so that you can annoy James Cameron.'"

OK I'll allow it

Vinnie, Sunday, 15 October 2023 10:59 (six months ago) link

The daft thing there is the subtitle because presumably the T already stands for trainspotting
