I can’t even hate watch this, it upsets me too much

It's like a man child playing with his still-boxed TNG action figures, all mint.
Also did we ever hear Riker playing or listening to bebop? I only remember trad jazz.
I seem to reveal that an earlier draft of "All Good Things" where the old TNG crew steal the Enterprise to go on Picard's mission but the writers dropped it for being a dopey idea, too bad Q is dead now or else he could've sent someone in time to persuade this show's writers from making the same mistake.

Every time Frakes reappears in a "hey the gangs all here" reunion type ep he always has this "hey wow this is great!" shit eating grin that I find really offputting. I dunno if he's had work or something? But his eyebrows are weird now.
I thought I'd enjoyed this episode til you bunch of cynical fucks pooed all over it, so thanks for that everyone :)

I don't think I'm being cynical! I just want Trek that's better thought out!

i wd term my attitude "quizzical hostility"
― mark s, Monday, 20 February 2023 15:54 (nine months ago) link
Look tbf some of those issues I agree with. Why can't he just commisssion a non-Federation ship? If its so important they dont involve starfleet why is Seven the first place he went? (well, we know why - so she can be in the show again).
That Titan captain was an utter cunt, but hey Ive worked with people like that so it didn't ring false to me.

I am one of like, five people worldwide who really liked the 12 Monkeys tv show so I liked that actor’s cameo

I bailed before the end of the 1st season. Can I skip straight to this one?

yes
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 22 February 2023 16:34 (nine months ago) link
Well THAT was a lot today. As well as having a couple of “you can’t call it foreshadowing when it was all right there” key points.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 February 2023 02:18 (nine months ago) link
Is this whole show just going to be the story of how this poor captain keeps getting strong-armed to his eventual doom.

Good read that a friend of mine wrote

I think they just barely squeaked out the right amount of gravitas in order to sell that wordless interaction at the end of ep3Kind of an odd juxtaposition with the Raffi plotline that seems to be verbal exposition dump after exposition dump. I’m also having some suspicions about who her anonymous intelligence handler is on the other end of the line
― mh, Friday, 24 February 2023 14:17 (nine months ago) link
so wait, are British accents supposed to be hereditary now?
― H in Addis, Friday, 24 February 2023 14:21 (nine months ago) link
xpost uh...you mean a certain scene involving a decapitation didn't make it clear who it was?
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 February 2023 14:28 (nine months ago) link
xpost And maybe she sent him to prep school and he turned out to be a ne'er-do-well scalawag, thus his various jackanapes
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 February 2023 14:29 (nine months ago) link
we're on the run, hiding from everyone, so prep school, greati really wonder if they'll explain it or just ignore it as stupid casting idea
― H in Addis, Friday, 24 February 2023 14:44 (nine months ago) link
"Tom Hardy worked that one time, right?" "Well, sorta."
Anyway maybe in the same way Jean-Luc loves his Philip Marlowe scenarios, ol' Jack here may just be addicted to torrid Eton-set romances.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 February 2023 15:28 (nine months ago) link
xp at Ned
For some reason I didn't read that as her handler coming in for the rescue, but the dialogue does line up. For some reason I read that as certain character being her backup that she'd maybe arranged, but that makes less sense!
― mh, Friday, 24 February 2023 15:53 (nine months ago) link
iirc the romulan sister in season one was an american actress they made do a britishes accent

Looking forward to future episodes where Raffi can interact with other characters. Carrying those scenes on her own has been rough to watch.
― sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 24 February 2023 20:42 (nine months ago) link
Can someone explain why Picard decided Jack was his son? I had the same thoght as H - is the accent hereditary? Was it just a "oh, hes a rougue like I was in my youth, weeping in butchers shops"? I guess he couldve done the maths and figured out the last time he was with Bev?
A building that massive is destroyed in one foul swoop and only 117 ppl are killed? Seems like a spot where thered be hundreds of people?
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 24 February 2023 23:34 (nine months ago) link
why would a close associate presumably have sex with you and then disappear and not talk to you for twenty years? I mean, that happens to me but we’re talking about Picard in this threadmaybe it was just awkward but idk it doesn’t take much to connect the dots there, unless Picard was senile before they uploaded him and had forgotten sex with Crusher. more like crushed him, right?
― mh, Friday, 24 February 2023 23:59 (nine months ago) link
iirc one of the threads in the TNG series finale had picard and crusher getting married and divorced . . . but the resolution meant that that never actually happened, right?
― mookieproof, Saturday, 25 February 2023 00:28 (nine months ago) link
presumably! it was kind of their possible reality shot, but we get to the movies and Picard, him sad man with no nephew anymore and no kidsthe funniest thing they could do but never would, because it’s bad fanfic, is Beverly used Shinzon dna to artificially make a son. and he comes out as mini-Tom Hardy
― mh, Saturday, 25 February 2023 01:48 (nine months ago) link
pretty funny the last time they saw each other was Star Trek: Nemesis, right?
tbh i feel like none of the movies should be canon

wait why are we calling this twerp "mini-tom hardy"

Insurrection was the TNG movie that I flat-out didn’t like, but it did bring up the idea that factions within the Federation were up to some shady shit. The execution was just insanely corny.
Insurrection was not well-executed but introduced actual changes in the status quo (Troi and Riker get married, Riker leaves to command his own ship at the end, Data’s dead) and the Picard writers have been leaning on those plot points
― mh, Saturday, 25 February 2023 14:18 (nine months ago) link
Obviously I meant to type Nemesis at the beginning of that second paragraph oops

I miss when Starfleet wasn't filled with incompetent functionaries.
― Shartreuse (Leee), Saturday, 25 February 2023 22:39 (nine months ago) link
I rewatched the movies in the last couple of weeks. None of them were great but Insurrection was particularly bad. Felt like it should have just been a two parter of TNG rather than a movie that had an actual theatrical release..
― groovypanda, Saturday, 25 February 2023 22:56 (nine months ago) link
I did like the Ferengi, just the right level of scenery chewing without falling into cliche or racist caricature.

that was the dude from the 12 Monkey’s tv series which i v much enjoyed yeah he did great in this i thought!

so far, raffi plot thread very similar to the stinky discovery s1 finale.
― formerly abanana (dat), Sunday, 26 February 2023 06:22 (nine months ago) link
Agreed on the Ferengi! The one thing I found off about DS9 was Quark and co. I know thats the whole idea, but the sexist money grubbing comedy gurning was offputting for me. Esp Wallace Shawn's Grand Nagus, it felt like he was playing it for laughs.
This guy had genuine mercenary malice, I liked it.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 26 February 2023 08:21 (nine months ago) link
I hated the Quark episodes when I was a kid but have been enjoying them on the rewatch. In a way perhaps Quark is the most relatable adult on the show? And maybe my sense of humour has gotten broader in middle age
― Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 26 February 2023 09:25 (nine months ago) link
The Grand Nagus was meant to be extremely offputting imoskeezy man who unabashedly is a proponent of capitalism, isn’t actually that great at it, and somehow ends up being the leader? could never happen irl
