I started posting regularly in January 2005.

Like damn, there I was just yelling at some retirees on a quirked-up message board.

1980 here, though I don’t regularly post and when I do it’s pretty low content

I hereby dub you "Low Content Willl."

born in '68.
signed up here in 2001, started posting in 2003 once i found out re the Lynx web based browser as it meant i could lurk-n-post using somthing that didn't raise alarm bells at work as Lynx looked like a telnet/unix window as opposed to Netscape web browser etc.

mark e, Sunday, 19 February 2023 17:23 (one year ago) link

1972 here, which I suspect is the median age of posters these days. I think I signed up here in 2001 or 2.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Sunday, 19 February 2023 19:08 (one year ago) link

Is it strange that this thread is making me feel bad for yelling at some of you over the years?

It made me feel bad for earnestly trying to understand Dan S’ position on politics threads, when I could have just yelled at him for being too old to change a two-party brain (luv u Dan)

We did "how old are you" polls on the same day in January in 2008, 2011, and 2016. Each time the median age corresponded to a 1979 (or very early 1980) birthday. It would be interesting if the median age has increased since then.

I was hatched in 1968. Gratifying to know that I’m on the old person spectrum. I assume that the 1955 cohort are the oldest people here, with all due respect (?)

Josefa, Sunday, 19 February 2023 23:33 (one year ago) link

i know this is veering off-topic but somehow i think i've been here longer than some of the old schoolers. i always think of myself as showing up around 2005 and then being ignored for a few years (ilx tradition), but my first ilx post was Aug 2003

President of Destiny Encounters International (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 February 2023 00:45 (one year ago) link

which also means that i will reach the 50% of my life threshold later this year, when i turn 40

President of Destiny Encounters International (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 February 2023 00:46 (one year ago) link

I reached that threshold in August 2017 😬

as time progresses, the % of time on ilx approaches 100%

President of Destiny Encounters International (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 February 2023 01:23 (one year ago) link

I'll reach that 50% threshold in 2057, when I'm 96. I still plan on italicizing titles.

clemenza, Monday, 20 February 2023 01:25 (one year ago) link

i think we actually lost a fair number of younger posters who aged out to social media and hung on to a bunch of people who use ilx as social media

my stats are the same as dan peterson's. if i had logged on earlier i might have posted that same song.

I think forks is otm and also of course old-school message board format is not exactly calling out to anyone much under 40 I wouldn't think. (I love old-school message board format, don't get me wrong.)

Born in 1965. Started posting here in 2001 after folks left alt.music.alternative.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 20 February 2023 02:26 (one year ago) link

1961 here, post pretty infrequently but do take a look at the ILM/ILE new answers board every day. First post I can find via search is July 2001.

I like the expression "long in the tooth". It is an acknowledgement that we all clench our teeth when we sleep, driving our upper teeth into the maxilla where bone is resorbed, and with it our upper gums recede over time

I have been wearing a night guard to arrest this, it is uncomfortable and creates too much saliva, and I've only been able to wear it when I wake up around midnight and am mostly asleep so can put it in

this is an old person post, but many of you will also face this

1964. Found ilx in 2007. Thankfully the enshittification of social media (Cory Doctrow’s phrase) hasn’t visited ilx.

Please do. I am evangelical about night guards. I love mine so much. Completely cured my sensitivity to hot and cold foods. If I'd got one sooner, I might never have had to have those bloody root canal procedures.

Born in 1974, showed up here in 2002 or 03. Weird to think I could have relived my entire life from birth to college in the same amount of time I've been Johnny Fever.

actually I remember the person I came here to specifically troll was Geir because another ilxor I knew from another message board told me what he said about Schoenberg

Very intrigued about how people found out about ilxor? I stumbled here from a Jim o’rourke google search when I was deep diving in his work. Remember being shocked at this archive or people posting things like “yeah chatted with Jimmy boy last week at a party after he hooked up with my girlfriend. Mega tool but damn gastr del sol know how to write a hit”! Or the like, and realised if found a very unique and interesting corner of the internet.

hrep (H.P), Wednesday, 22 February 2023 01:55 (one year ago) link

a few people from the site I wrote for at the time (Satan Stole My Teddybear) used to also post here.

one of them said everybody here was stupid and he was done posting here and the other said it was cool but Geir was hilarious.

the one that said everybody here was fucking stupid is the person who started the "hip hop taken to new levels" thread, lol. cool guy, but lost track of him as he shut down his social media I think.

Very intrigued about how people found out about ilxor?

- read an article about music blogs that mentioned The Church of Me in one of the local alt-weeklies
- searched for more writing by Marcello Carlin and found it here

With a November birthday, it'll be awfully late in 2024 before I hit 70. And if I'm the whole show until Dan S shows up, then there's no reason to rush it.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 28 February 2023 20:32 (one year ago) link

you're only 7 months ahead of me, and I'm not sure I want to talk about my age in one of these threads. agree that "considering the many disparaging comments about old people I've read here over the decades, this title doesn't feel much like a position of honor."
