Born in 1974, showed up here in 2002 or 03. Weird to think I could have relived my entire life from birth to college in the same amount of time I've been Johnny Fever.

I'll turn 60 this year. Been here roughly 1/3 of my life.

The Terroir of Tiny Town (WmC), Sunday, 19 February 2023 14:58 (one year ago) link

I first joined in the fall of '02 I think. So about 40 percent of my life at this point. If I'm still an ilxor in 2035, it'll be half my life.

And I will be bumping this thread to mark the occasion, I'm sure. (Hi, senior citizen me!)

"1980 but weirdly I'm 96 years old

― waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal)"

that's just queer time. personally, as a queer woman, i measure my age in terms of the lyrics to the boards of canada song "aquarius", which means i'm seventy-four this year. i'm looking forward to turning sixty-seven in a couple months.

"I was born in 1955, in the middle of the boomer years, and came of age in the 70s. The media called us the “me generation”. They used that label because they thought we were spoiled, but I was sure it was just because we expressed a confidence they didn’t think we should feel. I knew I was gay at a very young age and that I was going to do everything in my power to escape my conservative rural community.

― Dan S"

i was just writing about the "me generation" on my blog the other day, my take is that wolfe was observing a genuine phenomenon but that part of being queer is being, you know, not like the others. i also think that calling narcissism a _generational_ phenomenon is overstating it a little. my mom is definitely a woman of her generation, but she's also her mother's daughter, you know?

Is it strange that this thread is making me feel bad for yelling at some of you over the years? Like damn, there I was just yelling at some retirees on a quirked-up message board.

There is highly embarrassing evidence of my teenage presence here dating back to '03 (e.g. my first post was to ask Momus to rate my livejournal) well over half a lifetime for me and I am so grateful that this place still exists and looks exactly the same, ilx is so good thank you to everyone involved

voting for our opinion about a year that has no way to verify it seems like an odd thing to poll

I thought it was a “guess the number of jellybeans in the jar” scenario, where the answer would be revealed in the end.

We did "how old are you" polls on the same day in January in 2008, 2011, and 2016. Each time the median age corresponded to a 1979 (or very early 1980) birthday. It would be interesting if the median age has increased since then.

i know this is veering off-topic but somehow i think i've been here longer than some of the old schoolers. i always think of myself as showing up around 2005 and then being ignored for a few years (ilx tradition), but my first ilx post was Aug 2003

I like the expression "long in the tooth". It is an acknowledgement that we all clench our teeth when we sleep, driving our upper teeth into the maxilla where bone is resorbed, and with it our upper gums recede over time

I have been wearing a night guard to arrest this, it is uncomfortable and creates too much saliva, and I've only been able to wear it when I wake up around midnight and am mostly asleep so can put it in

this is an old person post, but many of you will also face this

We have a 1940, a 1945, two 1950s, a 1951, and a 1952 who have self-proclaimed as being older than I am! Hurray! But they haven't identified themselves, yet. Time for them to step from behind the curtain and claim their prizes.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 27 February 2023 00:12 (one year ago) link

1940 was CerebralCaustic, iirc.

1940 was the earliest option as well, so that one might not be a real vote. But if it is, that's incredible and it's really cool that we get to have them here on ILX

xp

oh, that makes sense

Anonymous internet polls are notorious for attracting joke responses, but I'm thinking at least a couple of those answers I cited are legit, even if they belong to lurkers who aren't exactly 'regularly posting to ilx.' I'm curious if they'll come forward.

I think I misread this and thought I was supposed to guess the earliest year. That means there should be one less vote for 1960 (I think) and one more for 1975.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 28 February 2023 16:56 (one year ago) link

I was hoping this poll would allow me to pass along the moniker of 'oldest known ilxor', but until somebody steps up to claim one of those birth years before 1954 I guess I'm stuck. And considering the many disparaging comments about old people I've read here over the decades, this title doesn't feel much like a position of honor.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 28 February 2023 19:19 (one year ago) link

Mark G, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 20:30 (one year ago) link

With a November birthday, it'll be awfully late in 2024 before I hit 70. And if I'm the whole show until Dan S shows up, then there's no reason to rush it.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 28 February 2023 20:32 (one year ago) link

you're only 7 months ahead of me, and I'm not sure I want to talk about my age in one of these threads. agree that "considering the many disparaging comments about old people I've read here over the decades, this title doesn't feel much like a position of honor."
