eh I find 'em useful sometimes. the reality is that a lot of modern pressings are just not good. I think it's been steadily getting better since say 2008 or so, when I think a lot of new vinyl was sold without much consideration for people actually listening to it. but bad pressings still get out and the reviewers on discogs will let you know what to avoid.

Thanks to discogs reviews, I learned that someone else had an off-center pressing of the pressed off-center record I'd just gotten in the mail, so I used it for support when getting my money back from Verve Forecast.

Weird question: I just got the latest Lande Hekt lp in the mail today, new and sealed directly from Zia Records in Phoenix. It had the "Violet Marble" hype sticker on the shrink, but I opened it up and it had vinyl of a different variant—red/blue split—inside, which normally comes in a sleeve with different art. So I've got the sleeve and hype sticker from one version, the vinyl from another. This is obviously a packaging error at the plant, but how do I add it to my discogs collection? Does this warrant a new entry? I can't imagine it only happened once, so maybe it does. Anyone have experience with a situation anything like this?

speaking of odd scenarios for discogs... I have a spare of a recent first pressing that goes for a high price. The first copy I got was noisy as hell. Visibly fine but basically unlistenable. The company kindly sent me a new one when I wrote to tell them about it. I think I'll put up the first one I got for like 15% of the going rate and describe the deal. I dunno in case anyone ever needs a NM sleeve for the thing. Or thinks they can fix it with an expensive cleaner machine.

ya I've seen that a few times, where a record looks visually perfect but plays like garbage. wonder why that is. it's usually not something you can just clean either.

Selling Fees Will Update on May 22, 2023

Discogs has made significant investments in recent years to ensure compliance with various regulatory programs, including tax support and privacy protection. These efforts have ensured a trusted international marketplace for buying and selling music, but they also come with real costs to provide these valuable services.

After careful consideration, we are updating our selling fee for the first time in over 10 years. The selling fee will change from 8% to 9% on May 22, 2023. The new 9% selling fee applies to both the item and shipping costs. It is still free to list items for sale.

This increase will help us continue to devote resources to maintaining the Discogs Marketplace and develop better tools for collecting, selling, and enjoying music.

Discogs AND PayPal charge commission on shipping. eBay too FWIW. I got into an argument with one of them and the justification was that they are collecting payment for shipping so therefore they are entitled to a share. Really fucked up logic.

That reminds me, eBay charges the seller a commission for collecting sales tax. Again, same reasoning.

I have a few high dollar records that I’ve been meaning to sell for a while. Should have done it sooner I guess. Didn’t the shipping stuff get more complicated? If I only sell one record at a time, that should be relatively simple, right?

Discogs hitherto hasn’t charged fees on the shipping.

Would have maybe been a reasonable decision to add charges to shipping if they had dropped the percentage to 6 or 7% at the same time.

Anyone else seen these Discogs scammers that keep popping up via the wishlist messages? I have Denim's Novelty Rock vinyl on my wishlist which goes for crazy money. Suddenly copies were showing up (one for $31 and one for $69 which are good prices). They have free shipping and say, shipping from unknown. When I clicked on the record it says not for sale and then the feedback is a bunch of people saying, beware scam account. That happened a few days ago and I just got another one with the same album for the same price from a seller with a different name (GivMusicRecords is the current name). This one has
253,791 items for sale including a bunch of other things from my wishlist.

I wondered how they had created so many listings already. Looks like Discogs are being quite quick in dealing with them but they should have found a way to block this seller somehow.

LMAO. To be fair, I typically place orders with combined shipping - usually there's a used CD that with shipping would be the same price as a new copy elsewhere, but combined with at least one or two other items, it's real savings. I once bought a box set and another disc only to be told that the box set was no longer available but they're shipping the CD - I was able to message them before they did and basically said this is kind of a bait and switch.

I would demand a full refund if any seller sent out an order like that without asking first.

Update on my sorry tale - the seller couldn't find yet another one of the records (3 out of 5 missing!), so he just cancelled the order as it was down to a couple of one quid makeweights. Brilliant!
