the border of virginia and west virginia is...existing county lines?

You're close. those county lines mostly going across the top of the mountains, dividing one side of the mountain from the other.

if you zoom in on the texas-oklahoma border it would be so much simpler if the river decided the boundary, but no, there are all these weird little loops and oxbows that make everything confusing

la vie wokisme (voodoo chili), Friday, 17 February 2023 22:10 (one year ago) link

that's the problem with using rivers as borders, the red river has changed course over the past century or but the border technically remains the same

la vie wokisme (voodoo chili), Friday, 17 February 2023 22:11 (one year ago) link

i wonder if anyone being charged for a crime involving an illegal crossing of a river state border has ever used the "No one ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same person" defense

Twerk is a gen x slang term. As a Marylander, I feel robbed.

Basic and fleek are millennial terms, I thought

Minivan Morrison (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 12 March 2023 18:42 (one year ago) link

Fleek is definitely Millenial. Basic is GenX. Low Key has been around forever, no?

Portland, TN, and Portland, IN, get more hits than Portland, ME?

budo jeru, Sunday, 30 April 2023 14:50 (eleven months ago) link

calling bs on this, no one in massachusetts even knows theres a Princeton MA except maybe people in worcester county

ciderpress, Sunday, 30 April 2023 16:51 (eleven months ago) link

yeah the radius for ones that are major or famous city vs tiny towns seems too big, are people in indianapolis really talking about Boston, IN more than Boston, MA

ciderpress, Sunday, 30 April 2023 16:56 (eleven months ago) link

I'd put the order in Little Rock at 1.) Springfield, Mo., 2.) Springfield, Ill., 3.) and then Springfield, Mass., followed finally by 4.) Springfield, Ark., wherever the hell that is.

"In most US counties, Florence usually refers to Florence (Italy)."

Ha! I was talking to a travel agent last night about flying into Rome and asked if Florence was easier and he said "Well there are a lot of Florences"

But who are we doing it versus? (sunny successor), Monday, 1 May 2023 18:22 (eleven months ago) link

I have been to Florence, Oregon and it has the advantage of actually being named Florence.

As opposed to the one in Italy.

level 54 I think, based on what I remember of travelling across the states 30 years ago, plus a couple of other trips.

crutch of england (ledge), Saturday, 2 September 2023 18:34 (seven months ago) link

I'm at 96, overwhelmingly from coastal visits/stays. I've only ever lived in two states: Missouri and Virginia.

Pontius Pilates (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 2 September 2023 19:02 (seven months ago) link

Level 129, although tbh I'm not sure of the difference between "Visited Here" and "Stayed Here." There are only a handful of states I haven't at least passed through, mainly West Virginia and most of New England.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 2 September 2023 19:08 (seven months ago) link

i interpret “stayed” as stayed with friends or family and “visited” like you stayed there but you were a tourist in an airbnb or a hotel

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 2 September 2023 19:14 (seven months ago) link

Yeah, that was pretty much how I applied it, although if it was like one night crashing with friends I usually put "visited." I camped in NC one night, put "visited."

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 2 September 2023 19:16 (seven months ago) link

Now that I think of it, I've camped in NC several times lol

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 2 September 2023 19:17 (seven months ago) link

i feel like living in tx should be worth more than 5 points

oatly carmichael (m bison), Saturday, 2 September 2023 19:58 (seven months ago) link

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 2 September 2023 20:02 (seven months ago) link

137, but I was a traveling bum/rubber tramp for a few years there.

The whole "visited here / stayed here" thing threw me off too. I "stayed" in a motel room in Ohio once before continuing the drive into Kentucky the next day while I have "visited" Georgia, spending most of a day touring the Coca-Cola and Carter museums in Atlanta. Should Ohio be worth more points? I finally decided no.

Poor Maryland and Delaware the only states where I don't think my feet ever touched the ground. They're very easy to drive through.

I really need to hit the Northwest sometime.

budo jeru, Sunday, 3 September 2023 21:46 (seven months ago) link

129 or 113 depending on how the vist/stay is interpreted.

someday i need to fly into Memphis and drive a loop through ms, ar, ok, ks, and mo in one day and then to Boston to tick off the rest
