I stand corrected!

I'm on the other side of the fence -- no more secret Soongs please.

Piven After Midnight (The Yellow Kid), Saturday, 11 February 2023 05:49 (one year ago) link

Lots of promising talk around the new season from those that have seen several episodes.

Cautiously optimistic but I'm taking "on course to be the greatest season of Star Trek ever" with a pinch of salt

groovypanda, Saturday, 11 February 2023 20:05 (one year ago) link

So we're back! Liked it well enough as a good setup episode, couple of things I'm still scratching my chin over. Was bemused that the opening credits were now the closing credits and now in a totally different style, I was kinda liking how the last two seasons' credits went. But as a tribute to the original show, a treat, and clearly all kinds of easter eggs stuffed in there.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 February 2023 02:27 (one year ago) link

mr veg said the opening title was like wrath of khan, same font etc which was interesting

plus lots of stuff packed in that opening scene

all v interesting hope it goes somewhere good

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 17 February 2023 05:27 (one year ago) link

Is it dropping all in one hit or weekly?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 17 February 2023 05:35 (one year ago) link

weekly i thought

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 17 February 2023 05:48 (one year ago) link

Weekly as per usual, yeah.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 February 2023 07:32 (one year ago) link

Oh and if you’re missing Alison Pill she’s in that new _Hello Tomorrow!_ series.

TIME TO WATCH PICARD s3 e1

mark s, Saturday, 18 February 2023 19:09 (one year ago) link

feels a bit zippier than s1 and s2

(not a high bar to clear)

mark s, Saturday, 18 February 2023 19:18 (one year ago) link

space has too many bars (they're always poorly lit and nearly empty)

mark s, Saturday, 18 February 2023 19:22 (one year ago) link

acting is when you phrase the clauses like william shatner

mark s, Saturday, 18 February 2023 20:08 (one year ago) link

Space is also poorly lit and nearly empty, fwiw

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Saturday, 18 February 2023 22:44 (one year ago) link

This was fine as kind of dumb action stuff but several things are bugging me about this qua Star Trek.

Starfleet and the people in it are so inept in Picard and Disco -- I know the added drama of TRUST NO ONE and CONSPIRACY OMG, threaded through with TNG-era Starfleet's reputation for bureaucracy, but the number of times these series require circumventing and/or suborning Starfleet officers, all of which happens pathetically easily ("Captain Shaw won't let us go save Beverley, oh I know, let's wait till he falls asleep before we change course, great plan!"), is so trite and lazy. It's the reason why I think Lower Decks/SNW are easily the best of the current crop of shows, because they show Starfleet as actually good at their jobs.
Crusherson speaking with a French Brit accent is supposed to make us think he's JL's, but that's the least interesting/bothersome part of this story. I'm annoyed of characterizing Bev as being this cornered gung ho mom -- can't she be her own character with her own motivations? Subordinating her to her caretaking role is disappointing (but, unfortunately, also very Trek) -- and then she also kills two people? Yeah sure self-defense and MUST PROTECT MY SON whatever, but that also felt like lazy storytelling.
Raffi's handler == Worf, surely? He couldn't resist calling her a warrior.
Mark: How do you feel about them getting the ugly painting out of the way in episode 1?

Of course, this is just one episode, but the fact that it features so many of bugbears (with more yet to come) kind of makes me wary.

Shartreuse (Leee), Sunday, 19 February 2023 01:33 (one year ago) link

let this one marinate for a bit and . . . it sucks

ancient combadges have galaxy-wide reception, and happily this one just happened to be nearby. couldn't possibly purchase/hire a spaceship -- too dangerous! -- so instead we had to half-assedly suborn a starfleet flagship that apparently lacked a transporter or tractor beam when we stole its shuttle. raffi is always terrible, but never moreso than when standing in a dark corner of a target zone and yelling into her tricorder that she's a starfleet spy. obviously her 'handler' is worf but why does she have an anonymous handler who shits on her for being an ex-junkie instead of a supportive superior officer? these dudes went seven seasons with a fluorescently lit bridge and a faux-wooden railing and now every fucking ship thinks it's in a submarine battle? i use dark mode too, but come on. titan captain, who presumably saw his family flayed alive at wolf 359 or something, was just absurd (while also being right). no matter how corrupt we are meant to assume starfleet is (gene rod rolling in his grave, no doubt), there are no captains anywhere with that attitude. and of course we have a callback to captain rachel garrett of the enterprise-c with absolutely no explanation why she's been painted red.

oh did you notice how that one planet is named after the showrunner? how precious!

this shit is like someone threw the memory-alpha source code at a wall and filmed it

mookieproof, Sunday, 19 February 2023 04:35 (one year ago) link

wait i missed that (hidden text) detail ftb snoozing or tweeting, now i have to rewatch lol (oh no)

mark s, Sunday, 19 February 2023 14:00 (one year ago) link

I get that they’re trying to set up all kinds of wild plot devices in one episode, but this was a bit much

I didn’t quite follow the “don’t trust starfleet!” warning leading to Picard deciding the best course of action would be to trick a starfleet captain into taking him close enough to the coordinates. He and Riker were going to be part of the celebration and they didn’t want to mysteriously not show up for that so… yeah, I missed something

mh, Sunday, 19 February 2023 15:13 (one year ago) link

jean-luc in his picardotage

mark s, Sunday, 19 February 2023 15:16 (one year ago) link

you’d think after the last two seasons he’d know at least one person not in starfleet who has a ship, idk

mh, Sunday, 19 February 2023 15:20 (one year ago) link

rewatching to check out the terrible painting i apparently missed last night

the music at the start is making me want a version of this show scripted by dennis potter

mark s, Sunday, 19 February 2023 15:45 (one year ago) link

ok lol i have now checked out the very extremely terrible painting

data wd never

mark s, Sunday, 19 February 2023 15:48 (one year ago) link

lol at JLP getting his AI to explain things to him he already knows and then getting cross bcz he already knows them -- scene needs more bing-style hostility from the computer

mark s, Sunday, 19 February 2023 15:53 (one year ago) link

we know this character is bad and stupid bcz he just delivered the dumbest reasons to dislike bebop that anyone in history has so far formulated (including on ilx) and also used the phrase "loosey-goosey"

mark s, Sunday, 19 February 2023 16:22 (one year ago) link

i hate the way these characters have each been turned into a kind glazed ham you the viewer have to repeat-appreciate at tiresome gustatory length and also anyone in the story who doesn't immediately revere them in the same way is marked as despicable or else gets punched

they're idiots and their plan sucks! their confidence in their immense knowledge is misplaced!

mark s, Sunday, 19 February 2023 16:52 (one year ago) link

I can’t even hate watch this, it upsets me too much

meat and two vdgg (emsworth), Monday, 20 February 2023 00:35 (one year ago) link

It's like a man child playing with his still-boxed TNG action figures, all mint.

Also did we ever hear Riker playing or listening to bebop? I only remember trad jazz.

I seem to reveal that an earlier draft of "All Good Things" where the old TNG crew steal the Enterprise to go on Picard's mission but the writers dropped it for being a dopey idea, too bad Q is dead now or else he could've sent someone in time to persuade this show's writers from making the same mistake.

Shartreuse (Leee), Monday, 20 February 2023 03:56 (one year ago) link

Every time Frakes reappears in a "hey the gangs all here" reunion type ep he always has this "hey wow this is great!" shit eating grin that I find really offputting. I dunno if he's had work or something? But his eyebrows are weird now.

I thought I'd enjoyed this episode til you bunch of cynical fucks pooed all over it, so thanks for that everyone :)

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 20 February 2023 06:57 (one year ago) link

I don't think I'm being cynical! I just want Trek that's better thought out!

Shartreuse (Leee), Monday, 20 February 2023 13:45 (one year ago) link

i wd term my attitude "quizzical hostility"

mark s, Monday, 20 February 2023 15:54 (one year ago) link

Look tbf some of those issues I agree with. Why can't he just commisssion a non-Federation ship? If its so important they dont involve starfleet why is Seven the first place he went? (well, we know why - so she can be in the show again).

That Titan captain was an utter cunt, but hey Ive worked with people like that so it didn't ring false to me.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 21 February 2023 00:24 (one year ago) link

I am one of like, five people worldwide who really liked the 12 Monkeys tv show so I liked that actor’s cameo

I'm one of the other five people worldwide.

mh, Wednesday, 22 February 2023 03:29 (one year ago) link

I bailed before the end of the 1st season. Can I skip straight to this one?

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 22 February 2023 10:20 (one year ago) link

yes

mookieproof, Wednesday, 22 February 2023 16:34 (one year ago) link

Well THAT was a lot today. As well as having a couple of “you can’t call it foreshadowing when it was all right there” key points.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 February 2023 02:18 (one year ago) link

Is this whole show just going to be the story of how this poor captain keeps getting strong-armed to his eventual doom.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 24 February 2023 02:24 (one year ago) link

Good read that a friend of mine wrote

https://www.emmys.com/news/features/star-trek-picard

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 February 2023 14:01 (one year ago) link

I think they just barely squeaked out the right amount of gravitas in order to sell that wordless interaction at the end of ep3

Kind of an odd juxtaposition with the Raffi plotline that seems to be verbal exposition dump after exposition dump. I’m also having some suspicions about who her anonymous intelligence handler is on the other end of the line

mh, Friday, 24 February 2023 14:17 (one year ago) link

so wait, are British accents supposed to be hereditary now?

H in Addis, Friday, 24 February 2023 14:21 (one year ago) link

xpost uh...you mean a certain scene involving a decapitation didn't make it clear who it was?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 February 2023 14:28 (one year ago) link

xpost And maybe she sent him to prep school and he turned out to be a ne'er-do-well scalawag, thus his various jackanapes

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 February 2023 14:29 (one year ago) link

we're on the run, hiding from everyone, so prep school, great
i really wonder if they'll explain it or just ignore it as stupid casting idea

H in Addis, Friday, 24 February 2023 14:44 (one year ago) link

"Tom Hardy worked that one time, right?" "Well, sorta."

Anyway maybe in the same way Jean-Luc loves his Philip Marlowe scenarios, ol' Jack here may just be addicted to torrid Eton-set romances.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 February 2023 15:28 (one year ago) link

xp at Ned

For some reason I didn't read that as her handler coming in for the rescue, but the dialogue does line up. For some reason I read that as certain character being her backup that she'd maybe arranged, but that makes less sense!

mh, Friday, 24 February 2023 15:53 (one year ago) link

iirc the romulan sister in season one was an american actress they made do a britishes accent

mookieproof, Friday, 24 February 2023 16:57 (one year ago) link
