It must have felt like practice for the designers who eventually built Cayo Perico in GTA Online.
And I suspect there'll be more Guarmas/Cayos in GTA6.

it did feel a little too uncharted/tomb raider/assassin's creed; i.e. i've already played a lot of big open-world games with jungle environments

i thought i was basically done with this game and then "EPILOGUE: PART I" popped up. i genuinely laughed out loud
not really enjoying "nagging wife simulator 2018" that much so far though

I think I'm about 75-80% done. seems like such a slog to get through the rest...maybe I should just start playing last of us?
― calstars, Tuesday, 14 February 2023 20:53 (nine months ago) link
have you finished the main story?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 14 February 2023 20:54 (nine months ago) link
no
― calstars, Tuesday, 14 February 2023 20:55 (nine months ago) link
You should probably do that, unless the story hasn't gripped you at all. It has a pretty well executed conclusion.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 14 February 2023 21:00 (nine months ago) link
Heh.
― pplains, Tuesday, 14 February 2023 21:12 (nine months ago) link
Ok
― calstars, Tuesday, 14 February 2023 21:32 (nine months ago) link
couple of different ways it could end, but "well executed" can apply to any of 'em, one way or the other.

Vaguely intrigued
― calstars, Tuesday, 14 February 2023 23:17 (nine months ago) link
Haha, yeah that first bit when you're just doing farm chores is a bit of a drag but it does get better.
I guess the main purpose, given how the main story concludes, is that it lets you continue playing to complete any outstanding tasks, challenges, rock paintings etc if you so wish

I'll take the nagging wife simulator over the know-it-all uncle MCM though

Isn't the gist of it thematic, setting things up for the Godfather III-like "just when I thought I was out ..." shift?
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 15 February 2023 15:14 (nine months ago) link
i was going to spoiler tag this but but the game is five years old so just uh beware spoilers
does the "epilogue" part of the game really open up the full map from RDR1? or just part of it? it's been so long since i played it but i recognize some of the landmarks for sure
― na (NA), Wednesday, 22 February 2023 21:03 (nine months ago) link
i guess it's just part, since there's no mexico
― na (NA), Wednesday, 22 February 2023 21:05 (nine months ago) link
I tried again the other night to heroically trudge on to the main story conclusion. I think I’m on chapter 6 now. We’re looking for new land because Dutch is a dumb fuck so we take a canoe to a dimly lit wood and I have to choose between using dynamite to flush out the bad people from their cave hideout or use stealth. I choose dynamite. I’m trying to move the damn character to the area where the dynamite has appeared as an item to interact with. I guess I get close? Then I’m throwing the dynamite and suddenly I’m in the cave somehow, and there’s a lady screaming and people shooting at me. I start to mash all the controller buttons together while turning the character around and jumping because I still cannot remember the mappings.
― calstars, Wednesday, 22 February 2023 21:37 (nine months ago) link
Apparently parts of Mexico are there but you have to use a glitch to get those parts of the map xp

Reportedly "Red Dead Redemption" was just given a rating in South Korea, implying a remaster or remake is on its way.

That would be decent, and long overdue. The undead nightmare dlc was brilliant.

I’m going to need a PS5 version of RDR2 running at a consistent 60fps first. (And thus marks my first ILG post, I think?)
― spastic heritage, Friday, 30 June 2023 17:05 (five months ago) link
People a talkin' about a new logo just introduced at Rockstar for "Red Dead Redemption" ...
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 July 2023 18:23 (four months ago) link
That's pretty cool - never played it and dove into RDR2 first, which as a prequel, makes playing RDR1 remastered a "sequel" of sorts that will slot in perfectly once it's out.
― octobeard, Thursday, 27 July 2023 18:38 (four months ago) link
I've got a huge backlog of games great and small, but even though I can't imagine a remaster/remake is particularly imminent, if it dropped tomorrow it would be at the top of my queue.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 28 July 2023 12:35 (four months ago) link
Allowing Morgan to be able to swim, but not Marston since he wasn't able to in RDR1, was both trolling and a brilliant move at keeping continuity.
Though I sure hope the GTA6 characters can swim in Vice City.
― pplains, Friday, 28 July 2023 14:30 (four months ago) link
lol it looks like Rockstar is pulling a Nintendo, releasing a straight port of the 13-year old Red Dead Redemption to PS4 and Switch for a very contemporary $50. It includes the Undead Nightmare DLC and ... that's it. No remaster, no remake, no 60fps, etc.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 00:06 (three months ago) link
You mean PS5?
― Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 07:16 (three months ago) link
No! It's being released for Switch and *PS4*! Which of course can play it, but I mean, a 13-year old game getting belatedly re-released for ... the previous console generation that's not even being made anymore?
Saw a comment that it may be cheaper to buy an old PS3 and a copy of the game.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 12:14 (three months ago) link
grimly amusing that the reason it's not being released for the current-gen xboxes is because microsoft's backward compatibility / fps boost feature means that rdr already runs at 4k there if you have a copy of the 360 version
meanwhile rockstar/take two are trying to squeeze 50 bucks out of everyone else for a 'remaster' that's at best gonna be exactly what xbox owners get for free
good to see that the universally appalled reaction to their gta remasters hasn't soured them on the idea of money for old lassos
― come on barbo let’s go parpo (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 8 August 2023 12:30 (three months ago) link
Was this even billed as a remaster? I could have sworn I saw that it was just a straight port!
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 12:34 (three months ago) link
And once again, Rockstar (no doubt busy with GTAVI) isn't even handling it themselves, they are outsourcing it. What could go wrong? Again?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 12:36 (three months ago) link
i'd assume that since it's coming to ps4/5 there might be the possibility of running it at 4k which you might stretch the definition of remaster to encompass
but given their history of shocking laziness i guess it's entirely possible it'll top out at 720p
― come on barbo let’s go parpo (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 8 August 2023 12:49 (three months ago) link
The demo looks very PS3 graphics wise
― calstars, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 13:20 (three months ago) link
GTA 4 remains the game that rockstar doesn’t want anyone to play anymore
― calstars, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 13:21 (three months ago) link
I'm bummed, because I was looking forward to it, but not for $50. Or $40. Or anything over, I dunno, $20. If RDR2 is (often) $20 and one of the most technologically accomplished games of all time, then no way am I paying more than that for a (last gen!) port of a very old game, unless it runs like a miracle or something. $50 is what you pay for, like, a boutique limited edition physical reissue.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 13:27 (three months ago) link
I'm bummed because this was it. If there's ever a RDR3, they won't start producing it until 2030. I doubt they'll remaster RDR2 for the PS7 or whatever if they can't be bothered to do this one.
Hell, you already have half of the game's setting redone. How much longer would it take to scope out Mexico and make the horses gallop more lifelike?
― pplains, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 16:49 (three months ago) link
And even if it took a bit of work to (literally) bring it up to speed, expand the map a bit, add some more connective tissue to the sequel/prequel, bump it to 60fps, etc., at least they could justify $50. But hell, they haven't even unlocked RDR2 to 60 fps. This is such low effort it's almost trolling.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 17:01 (three months ago) link
Sounds like this port is perfectly fine, but as expected absolutely nothing more than that, a totally bare minimum effort, which is a bummer. Had they spiffed it up a bit I would have happily bought it at full price; I loved the second game and I've never played this one. But for $50, when a modern technological masterpiece like RDR2 can be purchased for $20, or The Last of Us Part 1 justifies its high price by offering a completely (re) polished current gen version? Sigh.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 17 August 2023 16:22 (three months ago) link
Really disappointed this wasn’t ported to PC, where at least modders could have brought it up to snuff and added new content.
― blatherskite, Thursday, 17 August 2023 17:47 (three months ago) link
Apparently they added 60fps and 4k to the PS5 version of Red Dead 1. Why didn't they have that shit ready at release just a few weeks ago?
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 12:11 (two months ago) link
wow crack that whip bossman. maybe because they were already worked to the bone under an unrealistic deadline???
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:16 (two months ago) link
guessing they prob did have it ready they just wanted to make sure the base version was running good before pushing it
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:32 (two months ago) link
so selfish!!
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:45 (two months ago) link
This is the bare-bones 2013 port we're talking about, which was all but surprise-dropped for Switch and PS4, priced at a shocking premium. If it was that close to being ready they should have just waited a month, it's not like it was part of some coordinated million dollar multi-month marketing campaign.

That makes sense, I guess. Anyway, upgraded performance is certainly a greater incentive to get the game than it was before, though it's still way overpriced.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:57 (two months ago) link
releases would go smoother if that was the general approach, turning on advanced tech on incrementally and then optimizing between steps, but they dont do that because it would be bad from a marketing perspective if they had to be all just wait a few months and the game will be better, of course they do often have to do that anyway when they ship broken shit
