chocolate salty balls (a fucking UK no 1) has got to be hayes' my ding-a-ling - slightly better as a song but still it hurts that this is his legacy to millions of people

these songs are mostly not very good imo but I'm not a huge fan of balls as a thing or extended metaphor

the brotzmann thing kind of gets at why I can't really love most of his music although he's obviously very good

I think it's safe to say that hard rock was largely a mistake

fairly sure "Theme from Shaft" is his legacy to most people, Balls is only to a small set of people.

def jeftones (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 25 January 2023 04:57 (one year ago) link

(which even the former is fairly fucked up considering how huge his footprint in soul music was but 'legacies' amongst casuals are often reductive)

how did shaft do in the UK charts

I do think that for a lot of millennials he is best known as chef unfortunately

i'd agree w/ that

best fictional rap group mockumentary song with "balls" in the title: CB4 - Sweat From My Balls. Can't even remember if it's any good tbh!

you’ll have to admit that “Theme from *Shaft*” and “Chocolate Salty Balls” make for a great combo tho. the man knew what was up.

hard to imagine not voting for Accept here

Kieth Encounter (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 25 January 2023 17:51 (one year ago) link

ok it's definitely Accept with CB4 my distant second choice

Kieth Encounter (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 25 January 2023 17:52 (one year ago) link

no 4 for hayes is higher than I'd have guessed considering what the UK charts have tended to miss

I never knowingly heard the accept before and it does have a certain camp appeal but it basically sounds like what you'd imagine a german hard rock song with that title to sound like doesn't it. great sleeve though

You should listen to Accept. They were, as you say, a German hard rock/metal band whose English was not the greatest, so their (female) manager wrote a lot of the lyrics under the pen name "Deaffy" and some of their songs, particularly on the BttW album, are really "they can't have meant it that way, can they?"

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 25 January 2023 21:09 (one year ago) link

i saw isaac hayes live and he played "chocolate salty balls" and i enjoyed it in that context. i have never chosen to listen to it but he sang it that time and his band was good and he made it fun because he was having fun. it was especially good because he opened the show by thanking the audience for wanting to "see somethin wit a liil substance" - all weird like that all dragged out idk.

anyway, that's why i'm voting for "chocolate salty balls."

also because i like things where i get to vote for isaac hayes.

I never actually listened to Balls To The Wall, ever, and then last night I came upon it while channel flipping Sirius XM. Why didn't anyone tell me how nuts that song is? Love the male choir in the background.

Brötzmann could actually have made the list twice (the second saxophonist here is Japanese free jazz legend Akira Sakata):
