it's still so weird to me that amy sedaris is an active and canonical part of the star wars universe

Just found out from this meme that the central emotional plot point of The Mandalorian was resolved in some other show that I will never watch. https://t.co/jM9lwzAvbn

I get that point, but honestly I'm having a really hard time imagining the Star Wars fan that would be excited to sit through two seasons of The Mandalorian and be stoked for season 3, but absolutely refused to watch Book of Boba Fett. Cannot be persuaded that those people exist, even as bad as most of BoBF was.

I do like the idea of Mandalorian purists, given, well, Mandalorians (or at least a certain number of them).

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 22:32 (one year ago) link

I ditched Boba Fett after Ep. 3, but will prob check out Mando S3...

Vexatious litigant (morrisp), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 22:50 (one year ago) link

I think eps 4/5/6 are Mando season 2.5. They’re merely bad, while the rest of the show is absolutely dire, on a scale I can’t really comprehend.

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 22:52 (one year ago) link

Book of Boba Fett was an "ok" show with an absolutely weird-ass take on Boba Fett as a character. Not Morrison's fault, he was just playing this weird version of BF. This is a solid example of a producing team "not getting it." The only explanation for me is Mandalorian stole a lot of what made Fett mysterious for their own main dude, and they couldn't have two shows going around with basically the same character. Which to me means they should have probably just not made this show and if anything kept Fett as a cameo character.

Fett surviving the Sarlacc isn't as bad as the Emperor surviving being incinerated in a pit + Death Star 2 vaporizing, but it's not great stuff. Having a sidestep leading into Mandalorian S3 is a bizarre choice, even if those episodes were a marked improvement. Most of the time spent watching the non-Mando eps was me just wondering how Ming-Na Wen is 60 yrs old.

Though i'm also not one of those who thinks Mando is grade-A, it's pretty good and fun but it's not great. I think Andor is clearly the cream of the Disney+ SW crop, just across the board a superior sci-fi program.

fett surviving the sarlacc is one of the few things they kept from the original expanded universe! (the emperor did return in a comic i think, but i never read that one)

Excited to see The Last Mandaloroan Of Us

Temura morrison, bless him, is not great in BoBF, regardless of script

i mean he's ok if your Boba Fett is a mildly bemused dad

omar little, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 23:37 (one year ago) link

in the first draft of The Empire Strikes Back, he said "You changed our deal! I have to get home for my son's quiddich match!"

i liked mandalorian but was warned off boba fett by everyone that I know IRL who attempted to watch it, all of whom said it was fucking awful.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 18 January 2023 00:27 (one year ago) link

You could honestly just watch the Mando eps of BoBF and never know you weren’t watching Mandalorian. It’s really really strange.

omar little, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 00:34 (one year ago) link

Yeah just a very strange choice. I feel like Favreau/Filoni/Lucasfilm set up the direction for Mando S3 in S2 then second-guessed and panicked and used BoBF to fix it. They Abrams-ed it, in Star Wars parlance

Vinnie, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 00:48 (one year ago) link

I was one of the few that enjoyed BoBF too, but hard to argue that the Mando episodes weren't the best

Vinnie, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 00:51 (one year ago) link

Trailer looks great, love the almost pastel armor of the other mandos in the beginning

calstars, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 01:05 (one year ago) link

Huh. I enjoyed Book of Boba Fett just fine. (In fact I thought the second episode was really lovely at its best.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 01:18 (one year ago) link

I just thought it was very very weird as a Boba Fett story and it was hard for me to get past that. Taken out of context, as just another sci fi program, I didn’t think it was really bad per se. I think I just wanted it to be a icier than it was though admittedly if this was the journey the character was intended to take it makes sense from a certain point of view. Canonically it plays better and less amateurishly than Rings of Power. The episode you reference is actually good, the best part of the “book”.

omar little, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 01:50 (one year ago) link

Arbitrary and uncalled for rings of power dis, sorry

omar little, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 01:50 (one year ago) link

AFAIC you can't dis THAT show enough.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 01:54 (one year ago) link

they had kid Boba Fett as a bounty hunter (post what, episode 2 where Jango dies?) in the cartoons and I’m not sure if the Book show is even that coherent with the Clone Wars tv show material. eh, whatever

fett surviving the sarlacc is one of the few things they kept from the original expanded universe! (the emperor did return in a comic i think, but i never read that one)

the launch of the larger scale Star Wars extended universe in the 90s that followed ROTJ was basically kicked off with Dark Empire that had a lot of the same plot beats they mysteriously dropped only in that last movie installment. clone emperor, weapons more dangerous and more numerous than the death star, and other shenanigans.

one of the main things I thought when they rebooted and did The Force Awakens was “whew, at least they didn’t do that goofy plot” and here we are. there were some other old continuity bits that were ok that they’ve cycled into some shows

rosario dawson’s character was quite loudly searching for grand admiral thrawn so i guess we’ll get to that whenever she has her inevitable spinoff

that spinoff is coming this year!

I was actually really into the first several episodes of The Book of Boba Fett. I was intrigued by his character and liked seeing the rise of a sympathetic crime lord trying to build alliances on trust. But the jump into Mandalorian S2.5 was really weird - it was good to see that story progress, but the sudden and complete shift from the actual Boba Fett story completely broke the flow. Then it felt like a bit of a mess when they got back on track and accelerated to the finale, which -looked- amazing but played out with series of escalations, baddies missing shots on goodies and last-minute deus ex machinas like kids playing with their toys.
"Here come the reinforcements! Blam blam blam! Yay!!!!" "Yeah well here come the killer robots! Rakkatarakkata!" "Oh no! Run away! Through the main street! You keep missing me until I jump behind cover! Blam blam I shot some of your guys! And here comes the giant monster!!!"
I would like to see more of Boba in the future though.

Also excited to see Thrawn sooner or later, it's a great character, even though I never cared much for the Timothy Zahn books that introduced him - those relied more on flashbacks and repeats of everything from the original trilogy than even Episode 7 can be accused of.

Valentijn, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 08:07 (one year ago) link

watching the trailer coming off of andor, brain could not comprehend these two take place in the same universe.

also, knowing about the Volume now i'm unreasonably preoccupied with searching it out in this new trailer

I regret to inform you there is an entire Star Wars: Rebels plot arc over multiple seasons featuring Thrawn that culminates in him being jumped to an unknown location through hyperspace involving a young jedi and space whales. They also brought back Timothy Zahn to write three (?) more Thrawn novels in nu-canon

mh, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 13:31 (one year ago) link

Rebels was so fucking dope

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 18 January 2023 14:03 (one year ago) link

Really is a solid series.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 15:15 (one year ago) link

admittedly STILL need to watch Andor, but the "Empire Day" episode of Rebels is kinda what made me more excited for a show like Andor

imagine a drake meme

scoffing drake: thrawn trilogy
happy drake: hand of thrawn duology

sault bae (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 18 January 2023 16:20 (one year ago) link

jk i did like the thrawn trilogy but idk the hand of thrawn duology was my shit. prob because pellaeon is my fav character and if they don't bring him into the nu-canon they might as well start over yet again!

sault bae (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 18 January 2023 16:21 (one year ago) link

now you just have to read the Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy (or not)

mh, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 16:44 (one year ago) link

they're cowards for not making it a tetralogy!

sault bae (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 18 January 2023 16:46 (one year ago) link

oh, I was wrong. my reading comprehension was off and I've forgotten things. there are TWO Thrawn trilogies in canon (groan, lol)

mh, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 16:49 (one year ago) link

note that I would get bored and have time off work around the holidays and I think I've read every Star Wars book that is in-canon, other than maybe some of the newest grand republic era ones

mh, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 16:50 (one year ago) link

three weeks pass...

wouldn't hate it if they adapted the Thrawn comic miniseries by Jody Houser, but i think most of those new era comics will be ignored (much like everything they did regarding Han Solo)

Nhex, Wednesday, 8 February 2023 15:45 (one year ago) link

that's an adaptation of the first Thrawn novel in the new series of them, so... it's canon, but who knows

mh, Wednesday, 8 February 2023 15:49 (one year ago) link

My kid LOVES Thrawn. He reads and rereads all the novels constantly. He’d lose his shit if there were an adaptation.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Wednesday, 8 February 2023 16:33 (one year ago) link

there is a pretty good chance that Thrawn's going to show up in the Ahsoka live show

i'm blue (da ba dee)

sault bae (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 8 February 2023 19:05 (one year ago) link

xpost - is that the new Thrawn trilogies that he enjoys? haven't read any of the new ones, but loved the hell out of the Heir to the Empire original

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 February 2023 20:22 (one year ago) link

Never heard of that book series but just bought the first one for my mando loving kid. Thanks ilx!
