I dunno, Bonnaroo marketed to jam band kids with the idea that jam band kids have wide listening palattes. That audience didn't go anywhere I don't think

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:30 (one year ago) link

a lot of large multi-day festivals just schedule a little bit of something for everyone instead of going down one specific lane. kills me when kids (including people up to early 20s here, now) complain that a main stage of a local festival is a snoozefest for the afternoon. that's when the middle aged and their small children just sit in a lawn chair and passively listen as their kids run around

mh, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:30 (one year ago) link

maybe you're right but this doesn't seem inclusive so much as chaotic, especially wrt to billing placement. Tenacious D goes sixth? Noah Kahan ahead of Flaming Lips playing Yoshimi? And who ARE 50% of these acts? i recognize only five names in the bottom nine lines, i probably need to listen more. maybe there's a unifying theme of crunchy jam that is going over my head

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:34 (one year ago) link

that all said, there's at least a full day of sets i would happily go to here

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:34 (one year ago) link

old people will see the Flaming Lips play earlier in the evening and leave before the young person act they've never heard of to beat traffic

mh, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:36 (one year ago) link

vulfpeck is a jokey, chops-y, music school grad funk pastiche act, some discussion here: Vulfpeck - C/D?

sault bae (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:36 (one year ago) link

Who is the "young person act" in the top five lines?

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:38 (one year ago) link

imagining the cognitive dissonance of setting up a day of going from Digable Planets to Vieux Farka to 100 Gecs to Yonder Mountain String Band to Chic

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:40 (one year ago) link

and do you go to the Yola stage or the Gex stage?

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:40 (one year ago) link

forks, this is fucking Bonnaroo, I don't know what to tell you

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:49 (one year ago) link

i mean, if you're arguing "it's just two decade old bonnaroo refried" okay, but it's not the current bonnaroo by any stretch of the imagination!

ie you can pick roughly genre/generation amalgamated days for those dates in a way that echoland doesn't afford.
i am now wondering who the current touring members of 3-6 are

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:54 (one year ago) link

Bonnaroo has been bought by LiveNation and is basically a streaming numbers/tour booker clusterfuck.

This, however, is basically what you posted

Odesza over Lil Nas X?

abcfsk, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:55 (one year ago) link

xp we're not arguing with each other here, though i maybe like that 2002 bonnaroo lineup in toto better than the 2023 echoland.

Jurassic 5 = Digable Planets
Ween = Flaming Lips
Galactic = Vulfpeck
Ben Harper = Tyler Childers
Amon Tobin = 100 Gecs
Bela Fleck = Plant/Krauss
Phil Lesh & Friends = Phil Lesh & Friends

It's the same fuckin thing

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 16:57 (one year ago) link

Bela Fleck = Plant/Krauss

okay now you're getting a bit overexcited

i had never heard of or listened Liquid Stranger until today, sounds like a snowboarding video game or an nft

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 17:01 (one year ago) link

Bela Fleck and Alison Krauss are both bluegrass players who branch out, I don't know if you think Plant is gonna go up there and do "Tall Cool One" or what

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 17:06 (one year ago) link

I've seen both bands live, I'm aware. it's still a stretch imo.

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 17:09 (one year ago) link

i think you want to argue today though

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 17:09 (one year ago) link

marketed to jam band kids with the idea that jam band kids have wide listening palattes

this is 100% otm - the non-jambandy acts on that bill are all the nonjamband-type music that jamband ppl also listen to.

Had been looking forward to announcement of the Just Like Heaven lineup (we had fun last year), but this is fairly weak:

I know a lot of yโ€™all think youโ€™re Real Haters and that hating on whatever the new thing in music is is always gonna be fashionable, but I need you to understand that the worst time in music history was the early 2010s, when bands that sounded like this were headlining festivals pic.twitter.com/kI2E5TPyvs

xpost I'm done with festivals, tbh. None of the stuff the kids like these days seems especially suited to see in a live setting

i'm going to Hell in the Harbor metal (outdoor) fest in May. haven't been to Baltimore since 2016 so will be nice. logistics going t o be 'fun' to work out but overdue.

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 21:58 (one year ago) link

festivals ultimately though are as good as the people putting them on. there are good festivals, there are bad festivals.

I get frustrated at the festivals that constantly require you to make poison pill choices between bands because everybody you want to see is playing opposite each other. that's the downside of those festivals that are packed with too many acts in a single day. also hate ones that have excess sound bleed due to stages being too close to each other. feels like sometimes listening to a Charles Ives piece.

I also prefer to take breaks. cannot sit through like 6 straight bands for like 8 hours. during the 70000 Tons of Metal Cruise I only ever saw 4 bands a day, whereas friends of mine made it to like 30-40 sets. I picked the ones most important to me and had a blast and yeah I missed a few I'd have liked to see but i wouldn't have enjoyed them if I got no breather.

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 22:02 (one year ago) link

it's a balancing act and criticizing other people for not being able to maintain a self-appointed quota is a fool's game.

If I remember correctly, Rednex are now a franchise - if you have the necessary funds, YOU can start your own local branch of the Cotton-Eyed Joe hitmakers

Per wiki

In early 2018 the Rednex performer pool grew to include 17 people... During the same weekend, August 10-12th, Rednex performed with three different line-ups in three different territories, totaling 13 performers, which was a new record. Zoe, Moe Lester the Limp, Spades and Pervis the Palergator did shows in Romania and Hungary, while Billy Ray, Ace Ratclaw, Boneduster Crock, Misty Mae and Jiggie McClagganahan did shows in East Germany (Berlin & Schwerin), and Abby Hick, Rattler, Cash and Joe Cagg did shows in West Germany (Bonn & Frankfurt).

Where did you come from, Crock Jiggie Hick

The Myth of Sisyspacek (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 23 January 2023 14:33 (one year ago) link

Moe Lester the Limp was totally robbed in that poll
