Came out last year, only heard of it this year. Unsettling guitar and vocals and blipped out synth shit, very melting and lo-fi. Lovely stuff.

crosspost from the Jazz thread, but despite being rooted in ragtime/big band stuff, this new Jason Moran has some wild stuff on it

OK, I'm like 18 minutes into the 3xCD Kali Malone and this is outrageously good.

i do'nt know what rolling frankly annoying quirked up random ass sounds glooped onto a DAW 2023 are but isn't Kali Malone not that?

stirmonster, Friday, 20 January 2023 23:41 (one year ago) link

I'll gloop sounds onto a DAW if I want to, you can't stop me

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 20 January 2023 23:44 (one year ago) link

I haven’t heard Kali Malone, admit that the Bandcamp buyers and general vibe turned me absolutely off

always willing to be persuaded, tho. link?

I'm a fan, in part because she sometimes whiffs entirely, which is a good quality in an artist

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Sunday, 22 January 2023 03:51 (one year ago) link

the Bandcamp buyers turned you off?? What do you mean?

the Bandcamp buyers turned you off?? What do you mean?

I fully admit that if the number of bandcamp users with the record in their collection is more than a certain number, I become suspicious and d/l from Soulseek first before i make a decision

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 January 2023 04:06 (one year ago) link

can you maybe tease out that logic a little further

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 24 January 2023 14:05 (one year ago) link

xpost you cannot be serious

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 24 January 2023 14:09 (one year ago) link

that came out wrong, i think—

what i meant is that i tend to try to support artists on Bandcamp that are making good stuff but don’t have in excess of like 700 people with the record in their collections. i know that is a small number, but a few of the records that i think were last year’s best have like 78 people supporting it. just a matter of trying to help the even smaller guy

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Tuesday, 24 January 2023 14:49 (one year ago) link

is there somewhere where you get that number or do you just have to count up the little user tiles on the album page?

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 24 January 2023 15:06 (one year ago) link

I think you can see it somehow

sleeve, Tuesday, 24 January 2023 15:12 (one year ago) link

if you buy something or, more pertinently, add it to your wishlist it will tell you how many collections it's in

rob, Tuesday, 24 January 2023 15:16 (one year ago) link

ok, that makes sense, unfortunately I often buy a lot of single tracks and it seems like they only show up in a collection if a user also bought them as a single track. In other words, if someone buys the full album, the individual track doesn't seem to show up in their collection.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 24 January 2023 15:19 (one year ago) link

feel like Kali Malone isn't exactly debating which of her Maybachs to sell to make room for her Pagani Huayra

oh I know. it’s also all the LA tasteful ambience people I know kept raving about it. they should know! but i am icked out by the vibes of that scene.

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Tuesday, 24 January 2023 19:25 (one year ago) link

In the spirit of this thread, I would very much appreciate recommendations from the thread participants that fit the following criteria:

1. released within the last month (i.e. 2023)
2. pay what u want or reasonably priced digital option
3. shorter tracks in general, open to a mix of short & long, or medium (4-6 minutes is medium to me, less is short, 7+ is long)
4. minimal to no profanity
5. generally in the weird/wild/experimental category but I am a sucker for pretty drones and melodies, don't care abt vocals/lyrics as much. all genres acceptable really.

Full disclosure, this is for my public radio show that requires 4 tracks per hour that have been released within the last 3 months. You can view my past playlists here, for some reference points. the "New" ones are the ones I'm after:

this new David Lee Myers (f.k.a. Arcane Device) release is very much my thing

https://davidleemyers.bandcamp.com/album/ceremonial-fires

sleeve, Monday, 6 February 2023 23:03 (one year ago) link

"To be still surprised is a great thing. I heard a lot of music by David Lee Myers under that name and his moniker Arcane Device. Some in the past few weeks (even last week) were all along the lines of what one expects. Serious works of drone music, sometimes louder, sometimes more complex, lean heavily on modular electronics and self-generating sound systems. Then 'Ceremonial Fires' arrived. Nothing short of a total blast here. First of all, these thirteen pieces are short and to the point. I have no idea why there is a radical change like this, but Myers works with rhythms, sampled voices, sampled everything, and stuck together to be a good song…none of this aims at the dance floor but is well suited for a proper sit-down and listening session. In each of these pieces, a lot is happening. On the surface, the front-end of the piece and in the background, Myers creates a dense field that never blurs. It is always open and spacious, and much care for the more minor details of the music. I have no idea if this is a one-off change of direction or something Myers will explore further in the future. Obviously, I hope the last will be the next route for him. There is a lot of new territories to explore here, and the road is wide open." —Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly

a few things from today:

Ly Trang- Syenite
https://lytrang.bandcamp.com/album/syenite
She's a member of Run Cap– has a "fourth world" quality that is really compelling, drones and creaks and birdsong and moments of trancelike meditation. weird shit.

Jacob Becker- Pure Thoughts
https://jacobbecker.bandcamp.com/album/pure-thoughts
Deeply fucked up music that basically fits this thread title perfectly— a guy and an acoustic guitar processed to smithereens. Really cool.

one month passes...

is this the new time travel weird music thread? This Bureau B compilation is tripping me out. Weird German DIY stuff, maybe sort of like if early piano magic were German??

https://bureaub.bandcamp.com/track/gespensterland

Over the last ten years a strange mycelium was sprouting from the ground of Germany’s sound topography, going widely unnoticed while creeping its way up through the copse of the ubiquitous “Neo-Kraut”, “Diskurs-Pop” and the like. We’re talking about a small underground network of artists and projects with poetic, mysterious names such as Brannten Schnüre, Baldruin, Kirschstein, Freundliche Kreisel and Balint Brösel. Operating in the margins and intersections of folklore, experimental electronics, dreams and nightmares, the “Gespensterland” LP archives and compiles their magic works for the very first time and already today it stands as a contemporary testament with an auratic presence comparable to that of Pordenone’s “Great Complotto”.

i will contribute something new but - sorry to be sappy - i really have to say thanks to anyone who dug my record. a bit agog it even got into people's feeds somehow. honestly, i think getting a thumbs up on ilm means i can retire now ...

anyways. a bit less gloppy but two sick experimental records:

UCC Harlo - avant chamberpop/composition, on subtext (ran cap and ly treng labelmates), totally great: https://uccharlo.bandcamp.com/album/topos

Nascent scene of reverse-engineering the pop ambient series through a collapsitarian lens, is as close as i can get to understanding this, but the deleted label is putting out some interesting stuff:
