I like the Meridian Brothers, they're a lil quirky

Very quirky ( almost too much at times). They did a sped up chicha goes electro version in Spanish with auto tuned vocals of Hendrix Purple Haze last night as an encore

Breaking Cumbia into its proper place alongside the other Latin genres dominating the electronic world, @hellotones delivers an eclectic mix featuring a range of styles that soundtrack the Mexican diaspora across New York City.Listen ⤳ https://t.co/h4PcucWQio pic.twitter.com/KJuVYaj8lG— BOILER ROOM (@boilerroomtv) March 8, 2023

They're only coming to NYC and LA unless I'm missing something?

This comp of slowed down cumbia (aka rebajada from Monterrey, Mexico) was my favorite “archival” release from last year:

― not too strange just bad audio (brimstead)
Yeah love this comp. “Danza del mono” in particular sounds like it came from another dimension.

This has nothing to do with particular artists or releases, but thought I'd mention that I watched a really interesting film on Netflix called I'm No Longer Here (Ya no estoy aquí), from a few years back. It's about a teenager from the streets of Monterrey, MX who's part of a subculture centered around dancing to slowed-down cumbias. He and his crew are sort of a junior gang (they're just kids) – but due to trouble with a real gang, he has to flee to NYC, and navigate life there.
It's a really well-made film with some remarkable performances, and ultimately is about a lot more than music (particularly, social and political issues); but there are some great scenes of the kids dancing both to records and to music they're creating themselves, and it lovingly depicts a music-based subculture like few other films I can think of.
