based on the few songs i heard when this band was getting big, the voice was the only worthwhile part imo

i think they toured with the Cure a few years ago.
One of Robert Smith's many recent errors in judgment, sad to say.
(I say this about my favorite band in the world, mind.)

ilx is nuts. coheed is great. they are also completely ridiculous...but they make solid music.
as far as rush, yea its a fairly accurate comparison to a degree if we're talking 80's rush....

Wow. How many other musicians have gotten arrested for armed robbery 10 minutes before their own show?
Michael (Mic) Todd, bassist of Coheed And Cambria, was arrested for armed robbery earlier tonight minutes before the band was suppose to open for Soundgarden at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA. According to the TMZ, Todd allegedly walked into a Walgreens in Attleboro, MA with a fake bomb. He threatened to blow up the store if he wasn’t given Oxycontin. Todd made off with six bottles of the pain pill before police tracked the cab he escaped in. He was arrested outside of the concert’s venue, and officially charged with armed robbery and unlawful possession of prescription narcotics.
Coheed And Cambria confirmed this news, and that they would continue on with their scheduled dates despite what happened, shortly after the incident. They releasing the following statement:
“Michael Todd was arrested today on what we consider very serious charges and therefore he will not be finishing up the current tour. Wes Styles, long time member of the Coheed family will take on bass duties starting tomorrow for the remaining dates. No shows will be canceled.
We are surprised to say the least and will address the situation with Michael after the tour. For now, we just want to have a great time out here and finish with some killer shows in Boston, Poughkeepsie, Quebec City and Halifax.”
Unfortunately, this is not the first time the bassist has had a problem with drugs. Todd left Coheed AndCambria in 2006 due to a growing addiction to heroin. However, after a stint in rehab, Todd returned to the band in 2007. Nonetheless, this news comes as an enormous shock. It almost seems to crazy to be true, seeing how busy the band has been as of late (both with their opening gigs for Soundgarden and their 10th Anniversary tour this past Spring). However, it’s clear that Todd still struggles with addiction and we hope he receives the help he obviously needs.

I know you guys are scared to click on a Coheed thread, but this is funny! I expected more zings by now.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 11 July 2011 12:53 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah i had to see it on local news site first.
taking the cab to the concert venue is pretty amazing.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 11 July 2011 14:36 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah, I thought that was a nice touch.
I guess props to the band for being pretty swift and decisive about distancing themselves from him.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 11 July 2011 14:38 (thirteen years ago) link
Would need a heavy dose of Oxycontin to get through a gig by these guys TBH.

^^^
This is what I'd been expecting/hoping for.

always happy to supply entry-level zings!

Never thought I'd be saying this, but I miss Whiney right now. Kind of feel like he'd be having a field day with this.

I heard this on the local news as well. Between this and the 16 lb baby born in Texas this morning was full of minor human interest stories chock full of lol

This band reminds me of living in Shitville, Florida and hanging out with people I don't even like

I just listened to the first eight songs on their Year of the Black Rainbow album and found a lot to like, but the "I must retch at the beginning of a line sometimes, or even a word mid-line" retching-for-emphasis approach...cannot deal

i still rate second stage turbine + in keeping secrets of silent earth
― Mordy, Tuesday, 15 July 2014 00:30 (ten years ago) link
Woooow this thread is full on pretentiousness by people who came to the party almost a decade late (they peaked in '02, '04 ish), then continue to slam them when only hearing a sample of their work.
Second stage turbine blade is a great 'emo' album. And when these kids grow up having nostalgia for New Found Glory, Good Charolotte etc. you will all be hoping Coheed and Cambria were on the radio instead.
― Dreamland, Tuesday, 15 July 2014 01:09 (ten years ago) link
Not talking about the latest comments btw
― Dreamland, Tuesday, 15 July 2014 01:12 (ten years ago) link
yep, second stage is a lost sunny day real estate album. i like year of the black rainbow more than most but both of the recent afterman records are better and probably their best since keeping secrets

afterman also contains a fake thin lizzy song!

New song from their first NON-concept album? I don't know how I feel about it yet, especially because I came to really love Afterman.

lyrics stink, song is fun. they'll never top "good eye, sniper. here I'll shoot, you run."
― Mordy, Thursday, 9 July 2015 18:28 (nine years ago) link
been listening to 'IV' a lot recently .. (i know its not the real album title, but thats all i can recall)no idea re the rest of their catalogue, but i cannot deny i like their new prog thing.however, do i need more ? i suspect not.
― mark e, Thursday, 9 July 2015 18:49 (nine years ago) link
Which IV? From Fear or No World? I was really into Vol. 1 when I was younger and only recently started to appreciate Vol. 2.
― hourspass, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:02 (nine years ago) link
ooh .. ok .. hang on :
'Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV : From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness'
the cardboard sleeve just has a massive 'IV'on it, so just assumed that was what the album had become known as ..
(still no idea as to how that answers your question !)
― mark e, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:10 (nine years ago) link
Just curious. I've been starting to appreciate all the stuff that I didn't care about before (except for Year of the Black Rainbow, which I can't get into).
This is the most cursing I've ever heard in a Coheed song, and I wonder if it is indicative of what we should expect from this album.
― hourspass, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:14 (nine years ago) link
oh lol i was going to rep the afterman and then saw i did upthread. i think it's kind of their best record after second stage turbine blade at this point
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:18 (nine years ago) link
excited for the new record, doubly excited that the new song kinda sounds like boston/the cult
these answers tell me nothing re the album i have !
(and whether it is representative of their groove .. )
― mark e, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:28 (nine years ago) link
i mean, is mine part of a 'story', or a one off !!?
i get very confused re this lot.
something that never happens re black veiled brides ..
ahem.
― mark e, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:29 (nine years ago) link
oh lol
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:30 (nine years ago) link
you have the first volume of good apollo i'm burning star iv, which is the fourth chapter of the series
the second half of iv is called no world for tomorrow. it is less good but still pretty ok
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:31 (nine years ago) link
if you want more songs in line with the record you're digging, i recommend in keeping secrets of silent earth:3 and also the afterman
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:32 (nine years ago) link
but yeah it's a very representative record, even though the last four tracks on good apollo i'm burning star iv from fear through the eyes of madness (christ) are the proggiest they ever get
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:33 (nine years ago) link
Oh, sorry. Yeah, pretty much everything ^^ has said. I think that Vol. 1 might have been their most popular album? It's pretty good, and he's totally right about In Keeping Secrets. As far as the story, I think it's the end of that story arc with Claudio? It's either the end or close to the end. Year of the Black Rainbow is a sort of prequel and Afterman is Sirius Amory.
I think I just outed myself as a giant CoCa nerd.
― hourspass, Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:42 (nine years ago) link
lol right i think once you write a prequel to a prequel it's prob time to stop
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2015 19:58 (nine years ago) link
ta people.
i'm still confused.
and people laff at my love of 70s prog !
so, in summary, i would be best buying more black veil brides albums.
(i really really like 'wretched and divine' )
― mark e, Thursday, 9 July 2015 20:56 (nine years ago) link
one thing i really dislike about good apollo iv vol 1 is uh how misogynistic it is? and it is literally the only coheed record like that
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2015 20:57 (nine years ago) link
ahh .. i need to listen more closely then.
or then again, perhaps not ..
― mark e, Thursday, 9 July 2015 20:59 (nine years ago) link
never been one to listen to lyrics that closely (unless its jim foetus.. )
i mean i didn't even realize it until i revisited it last week

never has a band fluctuated in quality more between albums but i'm psyched they're getting back down to prog tacks

josh eppard did a drumeo session and it is soooo good. the angle of his ride cymbal will always baffle me (i'm guessing it gives it a really choked sound/short attack and he likes it that way) but can't argue with the results
