"Objekt - Bad Apples" is listed twice in the tracks list

amazing track by the way, will be somewhere near the top of my ballot

Oh “in this world” by mondo grosso is great too! I think I’ve liked most of what I’ve heard today.

I’ve been thinking listening today at the playlist. Since plug.dj and outloud and turntable.fm are dead and I loved listening to what other ilxors were throwing: would there be interest in doing some sort of ongoing collaborative playlists? One for 2023 and one without year restrictions?

I haven't thought about tracks yet (aside from cleaning up my Bandcamp cart and remembering some that I wish I nominated), but Objekt will def be on there.

I really like the original of "Us Eternal," that remix that NickB nommed is super good. Do disagree about the album, unfortunately— other than "Us Eternal" and one other track, it's kind of dull imho.

its true it could've been better but i like am fond of its quirky old rave sounds

just remembered i forgot to nom this non-album cut which is as good as the clanton remix imo:

no idea which asake track to vote for because the three nominated are all great. bad bunny has too many to choose between too

NewJeans - Ditto - this has already been extensively hyped up but it's so good! dreamy baltimore club-tinged r&b, riyl erika de casier's "intimate (club mix)" and janet jackson's "empty"
Red Velvet - Feel My Rhythm - k-pop's best girl group finally did it again with their best single since "red flavor"
Black K ft. Didi B & 3xdavs - Chérie Coco - ivorian trap with all the trademark energy of ivorian pop (if people remember "akrakabo")
PinkPantheress ft. WILLOW - Where you are - paramore-sampling emo/2-step fusion
Jim Legxacy - dj - another on the emo/club fusion train but from a different angle, with vaguely afrobeats & jersey-club tinged beats

ufo, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 22:23 (one year ago) link

enjoyed eye tell by jim legxacy & hype boy by newjeans
will check out these other recs

I find "Organize" sounds better in the context of the album, but picking between the other two was impossible so I voted for both

hey, yeah- all this asake stuff is great!

ufo checking out your recs as well!

my album signal boosts, check out:

anything on the International Anthem label but especially that Photay record (glorious post-jazz ambient)

the Diamanda Galas album (terrifying and great)

Legendary Pink Dots - The Museum Of Human Happiness (a peak in their long weird career of electronic psychedelia)

Wau Eau Collectif - Mariage (even better than their first one, peak African style fusion)

sorry that last is "Wau Wau Collective"

I wasn't that into the album, but I've become really obsessed with Hideous by Oliver Sim and I'm contemplating having it as my number one. It feels very unexpected. Will start going through the nominations playlist over the next few days. I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 01:52 (one year ago) link

ooohhhhh hell yeah, i forgot about that oliver sim song. that's definitely getting a vote from me!

One of the tracks I nom'ed didn't seem to make it into the Spotify playlist:

Sports Team - Unstuck

(it's a great rock track, IMO!)

Wet Legume (morrisp), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 02:31 (one year ago) link

as for further lobbying: I did a deep dive on NIKI's Nicole album in the Rolling Pop thread (the whole thing's really good!); but if you check out just one track, make it the one I nominated:

NIKI - High School in Jakarta

It's my favorite pop track in a few years... really fresh & distinctive; not trying to be "cool," but instead almost emo-pop in its heart-on-sleeve, literate cleverness.

Wet Legume (morrisp), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 02:37 (one year ago) link

lol just got to the sample of swv's "rain" like hey wait just a second here

decent!

morris i really dug that niki when it popped up early - gonna relisten now.

campaigning for one of my noms, as it just came up on shuffle-

kenichiro nishihara's "only tonight" is pure pop delight. reminiscent of early 2000s chillout lounge vibes.

Voted! Sadly a lot of my choices weren't there due to me not submitting any noms (my fault - my eyes seem to glaze over the thread each year, plus Christmas period is when I tend not to not go on ILX). Still, some great tracks in there! I've listened to absolutely no new albums this year other than Big Thief, so that part was easy.

You all had better be voting for 'Girlfriend' by Ruger or I'm going on a rampage.

dog latin, now that you’re here - are you nominating for the EOY? noms are still open for at least two days!

hadn't heard this song yet, but wow is this a banger. sounds like it was produced by the avalanches

sault bae (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 16:41 (one year ago) link

I'll stan for a couple country entries:

Kaitlin Butts - "Blood", co-written with Angaleena Presley of the Pistol Annies. A brooding rumination on the bonds -- good and bad -- of family. Sung with abandon, the final chorus cuts me to pieces.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSeCpIg6llI

Zach Bryan's American Heartbreak

Male country acts don't have much of a (any?) track record around here, but this is worth consideration. My thoughts in the Country thread here. dow also gave it some praise here. It was also Jon Caramanica's AOTY; words here.

Eric Church's "Springsteen" was the #11 track of 2012 (iirc it was the first rollout I followed live, as a lurker, so it has stuck with me). I just checked and people were quite upset by its high ranking.

many artists might not make it high or into the top 77 at all due to vote splitting by the looks of it.

Per usual, I'm not one for tracks— just not my thing any longer— but one album I'd really like to stan is Binker Golding's Dream Like a Dogwood Wild Boy. It's best described as early-to-mid 70s Keith Jarrett fusion with hints of American AOR like Bruce Hornsby and the Range, some roots influence too. The tracks worm their way into one's brain in the best way, it is a real *pleasurable* album to listen to.

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 17:47 (one year ago) link

I found the album disappointing but the track will feature strongly on my ballot. Not least for the startling reappearance of Jimmy Somerville.

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 18:44 (one year ago) link

I missed the nominations, some major ones I don't see on the albums list: Large Plants on ghost box, Muramuke (herbert & barbara panther) on accidental, Lalalar on Bongo Joe, Ezra Collective, Tim Bernardes on Psychic Hotline, Noori & His Dorpa Band on Ostinato, Tumi Mogorosi on New Soil, Al-Qasar on Glitterbeat, Meridian Brothers, Kibrom Birhane, Branko Mataja comp/reissue on Numero Group just to name a few! Hope you can check some out.. Now onto voting!

some of the albums i nominated, check these out if these descriptions appeal to you

chat pile - god's country : obnoxious noise rock
dany placard & julie doiron - julie & dany : married couple's pandemic album, ramshackle folky rock
horace andy - midnight rockers : just solid old-school reggae album with a killer massive attack cover
mike adams at his honest weight - graphic blandishment : straight-up midwestern power-pop, RIYL sloan
mj lenderman - boat songs : kinda no alternative style twang-indie which isn't usually my thing but it has good lyrics and fuzzy guitars and an old-school homemade/DIY feel that is catnip to me
sexual jeremy - the real sexual jeremy : more noise rock but weirder/more experimental, has kind of a u.s. maple vibe to the instrumentals

Jimmy's cameo and the very last lines are such a devastating combination.

You could consider it an achievement in itself to get points for different tracks in a single year, that's something we could seriously count (for example top 10 artists, adding up all track votes). In the end I'm not a fan of the idea of artificially reducing a consistent album with various highlights to a one-track "critics" pick, that's BS. Imo, the track vote is also to see how differently some of the best albums resonated at personal level. And sometimes, several tracks really deserve a vote.

To add a controversial opinion, another phenomenon that contributes to vote splitting is also how wide and hopeful ILM is to get very niche picks represented and to produce the hidden gem. As we say in French, we're all "pulling the blanket", meaning something common is torn apart by personal interests.

Nabozo, Thursday, 5 January 2023 07:30 (one year ago) link

I guess it's also a question of how much overlap you're prepare to see between the album poll and the track poll. For me it's natural to see a lot, but some might see them as two unconnected hemispheres of music.
