shit - he was a tremendous intriguing presence on those early Faithless hits

RIP!

I saw Faithless three times before they went stadium sized, and they really were a fantastic live act back then, actually my favourite band for a couple of years. They got a good deal less interesting very quickly after that, but perhaps it’s time to reconnect with those first two albums and their attendant singles, as the later stuff has rather clouded my memories of when they were properly slamming.

Dropzone was a classic, it was just a Defender rip-off but it was a superb one.

Deeply saddened to hear that the great John Bird has left us. One of the most modest of men and most brilliant of satirists. And one of the last surviving pillars of the anti-establishment. 1/4

Deaths in the last few days of the calendar year remind me that back in the heyday of printed magazines, we used to do big year-end wrapups, including "in memoriam" segments about notable people who died that year.

These generally went to press before Christmas. So if you died on (say) January 29, it was too late to add you to a year-end issue, and by the time the next year rolled around, it was old news. Hence a lot of tributes got kinda lost. Similarly if you died on a day when someone more famous than you died (like Huxley / JFK). Some very caring editors would do a little feature on "people we weren't able to eulogize" either in January or as part of the next year's wrapup.

RIP. Regrettable that he became such a willing mouthpiece for FIFA and all the worst people in the football world but, along with Ali, he was the most famous sportsperson in the world for a long time.

He was just mentioned on the "still alive" thread a few days ago.

He was indeed mentioned there, not sure if the person added any language like “but on his last legs, according to multiple reports at every World Cup match.”

Also seeing reports that solid journeyman producer Paul Fox, who worked with a ton of bands (XTC, Robyn Hitchcock, They Might Be Giants, 10,000 Maniacs, Sugarcubes etc. etc.) has passed; he'd suffered from early onset Alzheimer's for some years, sadly.

My sister worked with Vivienne Westwood for over 30 years and is in absolute pieces over this. I just spent an hour on the phone to her trying to cheer her up a bit and she told me some of the most hysterically outrageous VW acecdotes. What a character, what a life!

this is a bit late on Pele but there used to be this very rough as fuck pub down the road from me in the 90's called the Nelson. The landlord had a framed pic of himself tackling Pele from when he played in the US behind the bar. It's just come back to me who he was - it was Roy Ellam who is more famous for the big gym he now runs than he ever was as a football player, but tbf he did get into the Revie era dirty Leeds side.

reading the wikipedia entry on papal renunciation and of the six historically reliable resignations, benedict 16's is literally the only "bored now" -- the other five were all political in some sense (deposed, stepped aside to solve a schism, stepped aside when realised way out of depth)

benedict 9 was like the covid-bolsonaro of popes and kept popping back for another go
